(link) OT: Suh to Dolphins
Barring a breakdown in formal contract negotiations, Ndamukong Suh will sign with the Miami Dolphins after the new league year officially begins Tuesday for a deal that will pay him approximately $114 million with $60 million in guaranteed money, league sources told ESPN.

114 million alot of money. Not sure the Lions could afford to keep him. Why did the LIons keep saying they were optimistic?
To the Lions, I am guessing "everything" means a cap number they could actuall afford. Suh is a great player, but he is a flag magnet whose presence influences refs to perceive everything the Lions do as "dirty" while the other team does whatever they want.
How many playoff games did the Lions win with Suh? The same as with everyone else: none. Suh didn't elevate the team to being a true contender for championships. In other words, he doesn't deserve nearly what he got.
The Lions were right to stay out of the bidding war past a certain point.
Yep. Don't know if Suh was worth the money, I don't pay attention to NFL financials. But it seems like we're paying Stafford elite money for mediocre returns. With Suh gone Stafford better turn the corner or we're not going back to the playoffs.
Sad to see Suh go. The defense was fun to watch last year - mostly due to him.
Is it top 3?
Top 5?
Top 7?
Top 10?
Do you realize that after Luck and Wilson get their extensions, Stafford won't be in any of those catergories above that I just listed. If anything we're getting a very fair deal. Keep in mind, Jay Cutler is the HIGHEST PAID PLAYER IN THE NFL.
But why didn't they franchise him?
Not saying they should have, I don't know enough to have an opinion...I'm honestly wondering why they didn't put the tag on him for the year.
Thank you.
which brings it to 36 million against the cap for franchising Suh.

while the Lions is likely to be backloaded which is a big factor.
Nope. Over half that money ($60M) is in the 1st 3 years of the contract. Wow.
I think this definitely confirms that Lions are gonna go after a DT in the first round this year. I'm guessing maybe Malcolm Brown or Eddie Goldman
They may sign 2 DTs. I think it's Fairley and a NT, probably Dan Williams. They'll draft one, not at 1st round if they sign 2.
Considering their current DTs are Xavier Proctor and Caraun Reid, they are going to need to pick up more than 2 DTs this offseason. Suh, Fairley, and Mosley -- their top three DTs -- are all FAs. And its actually their top four if you want to thrown in Fluellen too. Their entire two-deep is gone.
Considering they don't have any DTs on the roster, they will probably draft and sign a couple. This whole Suh and Fairley situation is such a monumental fuck up by the Lions management. This is why they are a shitty franchise.
Except for drafting him in the first place, that it. I'm not surprised he was good in his contract year. He has talent, seems to be lacking elsewhere.
look even dumber. It is typical of the Lions though. I realize he gets double teamed a lot but 3 tackles and half a sack a game isn't all that impressive for the amount of money Suh makes. FWIW in one less year JJ Watt has 20 more sacks and 50 more tackles than Suh.
I hate to see go but I have never cared less to lose a star from one of my favorite teams.
Ben Wallace
I'm a Lions fan and I'm glad they didn't commit the money to him. He's a great DT, but the team's salary cap isn't in great shape. Signing Suh to that kind of deal would've made it worse - too top heavy.
Good luck to him. Hopefully, the Lions will spread out what Suh would've earned here.
Sucks to lose him because he is a much better player than many people I know give him credit for, but that price tag is ridiculous, especially for a guy with a blinking neon target on his back.
Not too surprising. Out of 31 other teams it's no surprise one of them would step up with money the Lions don't want to match given the contracts they had to hand to Stafford and Megatron. Would be smart of them to try and bring Fairley back, and they'll basically have to draft a DT in the first two rounds.

He's a franchise QB and you need to pay him big money if you want to keep him. His stats are in the bottom 3rd of the league? In what? He led them to the playoff twice in his career and had to help turn around a team that went 0-16 the year before his rookie season.
Which quarterback would you rather have in the league? I mean, you're not even good at criticizing Stafford. The usual line is he has inflated stats, not bottom third in the league, which is a really ignorant thing to say. So I ask again: which QB would you trade him for?
What are the thoughts on Fairley returning?
I hope he does and can stay helathy. I'd imagine that if he plays a full 16 games, he'll probably be fine.
If he's a hell of a lot cheaper than that, sure. Fairley is a good pass rusher but he is not the iron man Suh is. Fairly (no pun intended) one dimensional and doesn't always exert maximum effort. Wouldn't mind him somewhere in the 5-8 mil a year range but more than that would be bad.
he's a better run stuffer than Suh.
No, he isn't. Perhaps one-dimensional was too harsh. He's not better than Suh at anything, except perhaps as being a wide-body.
Suh has a tendency to freelance to get his stats. Fairley is more explosive and uses his hands better than Suh in pass rush. The problem is he's not motivated all the time. When he is, he's more unblockable than Suh who is unblockable but has one move which is power rush.
