-20 + the wind chill put us down to about -30 for this morning's run.
want to hear the reports from the guy whose girlfriend wanted to play pregnancy roulette, and darker blue and his 8-ball evening.

Had some leftover coq au vin for dinner, watched 100 Foot Journey and now some 75% dark with the Cointreau.
Course it is nearly 10pm here in Asia....

I was actually just looking at this fifth of fireball that somehow managed to end up on my nightstand and wondering if it was too early to start drinking?

Apparently this shit contains anti-freeze, which triggered a recall in Scandinavia:
Fireball Cinnamon Whisky is taking heat in Europe over a chemical ingredient that's used in some forms of antifreeze.
Norway, Sweden and Finland have recalled the popular cinnamon-flavored liqueur -- a trendy favorite of sweet-toothed college students -- after a batch of the North American recipe, which contains higher levels of propylene glycol, was shipped there, its manufacturer said on Tuesday.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says propylene glycol is “generally recognized as safe” for use in food, where it is used to enhance flavor by absorbing water. Sazerac, the New Orleans-based beverage company that owns Fireball, puts more propylene glycol in its drinks sold in America and Canada than in Europe.

I've probably drank the equivalent of 20 Fifths of Fireball over the last 3 years with no ill effects. Haven't had much lately, but I'm guessing it isn't a very big deal.

I normally don't worry much about this type of stuff. Seems it should give you pause, though, if you drink a lot of it.

in your system, you could probably shovel your drive naked this morning...

Cooked twice for the GF yesterday..... Breakfast was sauteed shrimp, candied carrots, roasted and tea smoked poblano slices, homemade chips and scrambled eggs. Did a honey, chili, ginger sauce to go over the whole works and chased it with mimosas made with Trader Joe's tangerine juice (I prefer Bloodys, but what the hell it was Valentines Day).
Dinner was rubbed flank steak with a mushroom/onion/garlic/wine/rosemary/dijon pan sauce along with whipped cauliflower (like mashed potatoes, but saucier and sweeter). We were sucking on an inexpensive but okay malbec throughout the cooking process and we decided against opening the very good Oregon Pinot we were planning to drink because our tastebuds were pretty well cashed.
And in answer to the other question, Yes, absolutely.

That's one of the most excessive homemade breakfasts I've ever seen. Sounds delicous, but I dont think I have the patience to spend that long cooking breakfast (And I cook for a living).
For Dinner, I did cast iron seared chicken thighs that you baste in a ton of brown butter with garlic and thyme, sunchoke (jerusalem artichoke) puree, kale two ways - braised in chicken stock with red onions for sweetness, and in chip form using a dehydrator at about 130 degrees - and a sauce of the fond, reduced white wine, chicken stock, shallot, roasted button mushroom (you can get a ton of flavor our of the cheapest mushroom at the store, parsley, and a little lemon juice. Washed it down with a bottle of Laurent-Perrier Champagne. It was pretty damn good and the lady loved it.

I roasted the pepper the night before because it was getting wrinkly. I candied the carrots in the same pot that I smoked the peppers in (after a rinse) etc. etc. It did take awhile, but it is f'ing cold outside and there was drink.
I love chicken thighs and both kales sound delicious. I've never had (or heard of) sunchoke. Agreed on mushrooms. You can't cook them too long.
I did the flank steak the same way I do goose breast during hunting season except I add some raspberry or blackberry jam to the mix.

I havent had goose breast in a while, but that sounds delicious. My dad brought home a bunch of pheasants form a hunting trip recently and we did the them a couple different ways. roasted them whole over juniper, quick seared the breasts to medium rare, and confited the legs to make soup. All were very good.
I highly recommend sunchokes. They are one of my favorite tubers. You should be able to buy them at whole foods depending on where you live (they have them in chicago). Peel them and cook them like you would potatoes (boiled) if you were mashing them. When they are tender, throw them in the blender with a decent amount of butter and just enough cream to get them into a nice puree consistency and season with only salt. Serve with morels for one of my favorite ingredient pairings.

Meal I ever had was whole ruffed grouse butterflied and grilled over a campfire. I now tend to pair things I kill with fancier ingredients, but we ate the grouse with a few Molsons, fried potatoes, and sliced peaches. A fresh grouse quickly cooled then aged for a day or two is about as good as it gets.

Man, I don't understand why people want to have kids.
February 15th, 2015 at 9:40 AM ^
After you share some of those special moments with the child you created, your own flesh and blood, your world is changed forever. You then realize how much you truly did not understand before you had a child.

Crossing my fingers for the drug in the last paragraph. That would be amazing in every sense of the word.

Checked out the new Ann Arbor Hopcat last night, had a great time. Crack fries taste just as good as in GR, beer selection (including 30 local beers) is terrific, and several big screen TVs to watch the NBA Dunk Contest.
February 15th, 2015 at 10:13 AM ^
I went to the one in East Lansing a while ago, and found the place to be quite overrated. The beer selection was good, but other than that everything was incredibly mediocre.

After a while, a friend suggested some Highlander Honey.
Later, as the evening progressed I thought . . . wouldn't some Highlander Honey be good about now.
Not long after I decided that maybe that wasn't such a good idea after all so I switched.
To Highlander Honey.
By then the evening was winding down and I sought out a nice Highlander Honey to cap things off.
Deciding to open the Kroger boxed red wine an hour later was where the problems started.

I start with a 32oz gatorade, eat 1 pickle, 1 vicodin or equivlent and cap it off hittin' the bong. repeat as neccessary. the main thing is hydration. my worst hangovers have been at the hands of jaeger which i think is 50% sugar.
