CC: Is it a bad sign that the $49 million offer was leaked?

Submitted by FrankMurphy on

Assuming that the reports are accurate, I don't see how it benefits Michigan for the terms of its jaw-dropping offer to be out there for the world to know. Is it possible that the offer was leaked by Harbaugh's people? Might this be an indication that he's using Michigan for leverage with other NFL teams? I know the perception in our world has been that Harbaugh would never do that to his alma mater, but I'm having trouble seeing it any other way.

No. It's fine. This us where we expected to be. Season over and now he can consider offers. He has not said no. Now, when does he commit? Up until end of the season it's ok to not quit. One day more and it's too long .

I think it changes nothing. The number had already been out there for a week or so. ESPN reporters and the NFL writers are moving in the Michigan souces' direction. Before, Harbaugh to Michigan wasn't even in the realm of possibility. Now, to them, he is 'considering' it. This is a positive development in my mind.

According to the pessimists, this is bad.

According to the optimists, this is good.

I keep telling myself Harbaugh is not coming so that I will have a really good start to 2015 if he comes and not be overly disappointed if he doesn't. I will add a few drinks to drown out that disappointment.

I have been trying to answer the question:  If Jim really told UM he wouldn't go back to college, then why haven't we made offers to anyone else?

This might answer it.  Hackett needed to go back and sweeten the pot, raise more cash, get approval (at least informally / tacitly).  UM hasn't been told "no way" but on the other hand Jim might not be saying anything more than, "Ehhh I'll think about it after the season's over."

We might be that homely dorky guy pining for the hottie who lives next door, while she's waiting for the hot guy to dump his current on-the-outs girl.  So we stand there on the sideline, waiving, waiting, thinking/hoping we have a chance, when in reality we don't.

But, I also feel, we take a part of that cash and throw it at Les Miles and it's an instant yes, regardless of the CoachSearchSpeak he uttered recently.  (And Nick Saban is still at the Dolphins, right.)

if true, we offered Harbaugh for realz top dollars for NFL and College coaches. If he turns down the offer, the entire fan base can comfortably be done with him, and A list coaches thinking about being plan B know we ain't kidding this time.

This is a brash, no fucking around, move. And now that it is out there, Harbaugh has to publicly declare sooner or later. The leak may have been intentional to force some hands to be shown.

I like Hacket's game.

Lets not take the pissimistic view on this. This information has been floating around for about a week as a rumor. Now it is being reported as a fact is the only difference. For the last 2 weeks we have all been optimistic that he hasn't said "NO" so he's coming.

What has changed? Someone read Mgoblog or maybe now they are backstroking a little. The news leaked from what was once a rumor.

I just don't see the motive for Jim to use his alma mater as a bargaining chip. He might get around the same in the NFL along with them giving up some draft picks, he is still under contract. It is either a firing or trade. He can leave for Michigan.

Optimistic, Jim is coming home!

I agree. He is already hot in the nfl as it is. He would be by far the most sought after big name right now outside of Bill B.

He doesn't need to use us as leverage against the nfl. He could use Oakland, NY, and Chicago and cause a coast to coast bidding war. It seems as though there is at least general interest. Jut couldn't come out because of his current job and situation.

Depends on who leaked it.

If it was Harbaugh's camp, then it could be a bad sign that they are using this as leverage.

If it was Michigan's camp, then it could be viewed a ploy to force Harbaugh to make a decision.

However, it could have just been a second party person familiar with the offer and couldn't hold back due to the size f the offer.

This hasn't been confirmed anywhere and so to me it carries no more validity that leaks from "friends" or AD insiders.  I think it is more an agent fishing to see what offers are out there and who is willing to pony up something similar.  I think his agent wouldn't be earning his money if this wasn't out there to make the Raiders/Jets/Bears etc think that JH comes with at least an 8M annual pricetag.

Actually i think we leaked it. Maybe he really does want to stay in the nfl. That is why we publicly offered to double his salary. What type of person would refuse his alma for that kind of $$$

Yes, it is likely a bad sign.  If Michigan leaked it, it's a signal to fans that they did everything they could but came up short.  If Harbaugh's agent leaked it, he's using Michigan for leverage. There is no scenario in which this benefits either party.  Hopefully, this came from someone close to the situation who just couldn't keep quiet, but I doubt it.

that makes very little sense for them to do. That high of a salary might discourage trade offers, and they'd want as many of those as possible for maximum leverage. This only makes sense coming from the Harbaugh camp if they're talking to NFL teams in addition to Michigan.

That makes very little sense. Nothing known about JH indicates he would treat Michigan in that way. Also, the Niners might not care about a small decrease in trade value if it means getting any offers, NOW, from teams offering them anything, right?

you do know that this kind of stuff isn't really Jim's decision to make right? He has an agent and lawyers and accountants all sitting around deciding how to go about getting Jim what he wants. He might well not want to use Michigan as leverage, he might want to just turn us down easily, and his agents are telling him that would be foolish. I swear, I think some of you believe that these kind of things are just Hackett and Harbaugh sitting down alone.

it's just a feeding frenzy based on a rumor that propagated through the tubes today. Every site reporting it wants to look authoritative if they can't have the scoop. They all say "reportedly," which only has to mean that someone else talked out of their ass and sounded plausible.

Could it be leaked info? Possibly.  Or more likely, it's just the interwebs abhoring a vacuum and creating a story out of conjecture and wishful thinking.

There's no need for preemptive negativity "I'm having trouble seeing it any other way."

Based on what I heard on the edge of internet boards, things are about to happen really fast-- it was probably leaked not to blindside people.

The problem with press like this is that it may push Harbaugh to make a decision. He'll be asked about this every time he's in front of a microphone. The NFL guys want to protect their brand and probably leaked this to force JH to decide now. Since there are more NFL options, he may lean that way. Bunch of damn babies.

No. SF could have leaked in desperate attempt to get trade value. Or, details could leak because now draft Contracts are putting these details before more eyes.

Those seem equally likely

rumor is the last couple days was the first time the agent got involved (which led to increased optimism).  prior to that, it was jack sort of mediating things.  so his agent is just doing what agents do.
