CC- An interesting Reddit comment
Edit: The reddit user is elduderino01. I don't know if it has anything to do with the rdt/wiab junk that everyone is babbling about.
Like everything else relating to the coaching search, take this with a grain/bucket of salt. That said, two things lend this at least a little bit of credibility. 1. He's an Alabama fan, yet knows a suspicious amount about the inner workings of U-M -- far more than any random Alabama fan could really be expected to. 2. He has a 5 year old account. Generally on reddit, the older your account is, the more credible you are. At the very least it means you're not there simply to troll. Take it for what it's worth. I'm not presenting this as a fact.

"According to my source ( a fella who works in their Athletic Department and is a friend of my brother who is a faculty member there, and who correctly called the timelines for both the former AD and Head Coaches being fired earlier this season... ) Harbaugh to UM has been pretty much and agreement in principal for almost a month, and as of this past week the deal is done. harbaugh will be e next head football coach at UM... It also makes plenty of sense, certainly more sense than continuing to work for the Yorks or to start new with the Davis's.... Oh and for what its worth, it is the family that owns the Miami Dolphins who were so instrumental in getting this done. Apparently theyre also huge UM boosters and they are writing the blank check. As well Lloyd Carr and his backers on the Board of Regents have given their blessing as well. Harbaugh has been assured he will have carte blanch when it comes to football operations in A2"

But this was a great thing to see!!!
It did make me think of Ross being quoted some weeks ago where he said "he'd rather see Harbaugh in Ann Arbor than Miami."

in the lack of knowledge I actually have.
Grad, season ticket holder, donor, Mom (we always know what's up) and I KNOW NOTHING. What the hell.

All about who you know and how you socialize. When I deployed to Afghanistan I got more work done in the smoke pits than at my desk. You meet some supply guy and share a couple of good conversations, bum him a smoke, maybe help him unload a truck. All the sudden he finds a box of radios you could use in the back of his store room.
Works the same way with info in journalism.

Doesn't mean much if it is signed either. U of M isn't suing Harbaugh for damages, and I doubt they'd decide to taking on an NFL team for tortious interference if they swooped him away after it was papered.

This isn't how it works. Thursday, Harbaugh wasn't coming. Friday, Harbaugh was coming. Clearly we should be getting news today that he isn't coming.
Screw it. I'll take the good news.

At the very least the part about the regents is false according to my source who knows a regent really well. Either they haven't been part of any Harbaugh deal, or they're not leaking it to people they leak other stuff to.
December 6th, 2014 at 5:17 PM ^
"they're not leaking it to people they leak other stuff to."
Seems plausible if they really want it to make a splash. Either way, I hate you for sprinkling on my tentative parade.
December 6th, 2014 at 5:20 PM ^
Is it plausible that the regents aren't part of the deal? How does it ordinarily work regarding their involvement in important hirings?
December 6th, 2014 at 5:40 PM ^
Prez signs the contract on behalf of the regents, along with the AD.
December 6th, 2014 at 6:04 PM ^
But are the regents consulted on the candidates, or are they brought the final candidate and the offer to approve?
December 6th, 2014 at 6:07 PM ^
Probably the latter but I really don't know.
December 6th, 2014 at 6:07 PM ^
Seth, I think that can be read as the regents have given their blessing to Harbaugh, not to the deal specifically. Do you know if that much is true?

If I believed you at all I would be elated. Big if though. No offense, but you lack track record and if there's one thing I've learned its that Michigan can't have nice things.
If this does happen I will be overly nice to you for a really long time as apology for questioning you as a source.

Assuming for sake of argument that this is true 9 million has got to be salary + buyout. 9 million is more than any coach, NFL or College makes.
December 6th, 2014 at 6:00 PM ^
But I thought there is no buyout if Harbaugh goes to college? Maybe it's part of the deal Michigan has worked out with SF to let the Harbaugh announcement happen on Monday? Or else salary plus signing bonus to buy a house or something.
December 6th, 2014 at 7:17 PM ^
have ever been made public. He could have a buyout for a college job. The difference is that the 49ers could stop him from taking an NFL job, but not from going back to college.
