Hypothetical 2015 Coaching Candidates

Submitted by Yeezus on

I must admit I watched that game on Saturday night and wasn't even really that mad.  The state of the football program the last 7 years has made me numb to the pain.  Hoke seems like a wonderful guy and is an excellent recruiter - but it should be clear to everyone by now he's in over his head as our coach.

If this season stays in the dumpster (or as a mound of eternal flaming tires) - what coaches would hypothetically be out there to give us hope heading into 2015?

Harbaugh 1 and Harbaugh 2 will always be thrown around - but beyond them, is there anyone with ties to Michigan that would represent a "solid" choice the fanbase could unite behind?  I'm struggling to come up with other names - and that's a damn shame since Bo should have left a tree of many disciples that could take this program well into the mid-21st century.  But it seems as if most of those flames have died out post-Moeller and Carr.

from an otherwise generally classy program: Hoke referring to ND 'chickening out' of the series, and playing the chicken dance song over the PA at Michigan Stadium. Just an addendum to the discussion, that's all. I can't help but think ND's attitude about us has been boiling after our recent successes, and those unnecessary insults were not good gamesmanship. The explosion game last Saturday.

Yes, his mommy and daddy. That said, O.S.U. went out and found a coach on a lower level that had won multiple championships, and was a winner everywhere he went, a sleazebag and cheater no doubt, but a winner none the less. There are people out there who are good to great coaches on a lower level, who could come in and lead this team back to being a revelent, winning program if they are given the chance. It is too bad that some artificial standard of having "ties to the program" has arisen, and is being used by those who fear change to shut the door on the possibility of hiring them.

Why is everyone so lost in having Michigan ties? Yost didn't have Michigan ties. Chrysler didn't have Michigan ties. Schembechler didn't have Michigan ties. Our three best coaches of all time came from other program and we still view their legacy as being Michigan men. They all had something in common too, wait were they all winning head coaches? Were they all hired because they could win? Hmm, what an idea!

Because it appears that a coach with a sub .500 career head coaching record was given the keys to the kingdom because of those ties.  It seems highly unlikely that a Brady Hoke without ties to Michigan would have ever been considered for this job.  Especially if the AD regards this as one of the top jobs in all of college football!

So can we finally move forward?! How long before we can use a proven theory that wins games and has made us the team w the most wins in NCAA history?! We have so much money at our disposal and whether or not it's a "desirable job" or not, winning coaches want to be legends, they want to be the man that turns around a large football program. That's the coach I want, someone that constantly wants to win, wants to cement his legacy and wants people to remember his name. Idc who he has coached before, or what university or NFL team he played for etc

David Shaw....even though I know he's a Stanford guy

He has retained what harbaugh created post Andrew luck....he has name recognition as a recruiter, his team's are extremely disciplined.....oh, but he's not miles, harbaugh, or some spread dude. It would be a travesty of we got another spread coach after building a roster of pro style kids. He also is not controversial despite what Brian (the holder of all the answers apparently) thinks.

Also, even though kind of an ass....Bret Beilema, he seems to have Arkansas on the right path. He also made Wisconsin go from a solid program to a great one.

All that said....I hope Hoke finds a way to motivate these kids and succeed. I still think we have good coordinators, nuss is still working out the kinks, and I still don't think the way mattison instantly turned the defense around was a fluke like some are starting to believe.

Hoke is a CEO coach with a very extensive knowledge of defensive line play and a great football knowledge overall, but he's not a big ego type or spread type which seems to be what many want, at least on this board. I'm sort of fed up with everyone assuming he has no idea how to coach. Unfortunately we live in a instant gratification sports society fueled by people like Colin Cowherd.

why have none of you gone right to the A-1 sure fire source for all M coaching search info?

That's right.... I'm talking about none other than the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. Kirk H. W. Herbstreet III, MD, DDS, ASPCA, Esq. Junyah

He's never steered us wrong before.

Why not Greg Schiano? He was rumored to be one of our top choices before Rich Rod was hired. He turned a terrible Rutgers football program into a contender with terrible talent and facilities. He set Rutgers onto a path of eventually joining the Big 10. He struggled in the pro's, but so did Pete Carroll in his first go around. He has a Big 10 pedigree. He's only 48 so he could easily be around for 15-20 years. He runs a pro-style offense so he wouldn't need to come in and completely revamp the team with "his" players. He seems to be aa tough and demanding coach that Michigan fans favor. And...HE'S AVAILABLE and would probably jump at the chance.

Fire

Now: Funk, Ferrigno [OL is obvious. Special teams returns/coverages are average. TE blocking is horrible the past few years]

Now/End of Season: Hoke, Brandon

Retire at End of Season
Fred Jackson [RBs lacking vision, little player development]

AD

Jeff Long  [Michigan ties, current chairman of playoff committee. Somehow got Bret Bielema to leave Wisconsin]
Brad Bates [played under Bo, experience with great hockey program, experience at academic institutions like BC and Vandy]
Tom Jurich [Great basketball hiring. Louisville competitive in both football and basketball]

Interim HC
Nuss/Mattison/Manning

HC
1. Harbaugh & Harbaugh
2. Interim candidates
depending on 2014 record

The rest:
Hugh Freeze  [Recruit well (Haven't seen scandal at Ole Miss... yet). Good record given competition in SEC. Impressive track records on offense. Undergrad degree in mathematics.]
Mike Gundy [Impressive results at OKST. Needs investigation into SI report.]
Greg Roman [49ers OC. Has interest coaching in college (interviewed for PSU job)]
Rob Chudzinski  [Good offensive coach. Unproven as HC]
Greg Schiano  [Did ok at Rutgers. Could help recruiting the east coast. Worth an interview to see if he's learned from his NFL experience.]
Harold Goodwin [Michigan man, good OL coaching]
Kyle Whittingham  [Solid record at a place that's hard to succeed. Good bowl record.]
Write a blank check to Narduzzi

Other names:
Mack Brown
Ed Orgeron
Josh McDaniels

Coordinators (a few can be considered for HC too)
Adrian Klemm (OC)  [Excellent Recruiter. Coached a great running game.]

Charlie Taaffe (OC)  [Steady completion % and passer rating increase for QBs under him.]
Rocky Seto (DC)  [Solid Defense at USC and now as Seahawks Pass Defense Coordinator]

Andy Moeller (OC)  [Michigan man, alcohol problem, good OL coach.]
Mike Norvell (OC)  [Great offensive coach, will get a HC offer soon]
Randy Shannon (DC)  [Good DC at Miami]

Didn't do a whole lot of research as I focused on the level of competition and stats.
I believe $ can get most of the names above if we want them.

To me you have two options, Jim or John harbaugh, I think we could get one, probably more likely to get john, big buyout, but I think would be a better fit, especially with Dave Brandon. If you make a change, I feel like these are the two top choices.

I agree. However the new president isn't going to fire the AD I don't think right away. I think DB will get one more shot at it and I think John Harbaugh wants to coach here, again, just baseless speculation. I used to hope Hoke was going to work out, I still do, it's just becoming clearer to me that that is also just baseless speculation!
