Terry Richardson on 2014 Defense

Submitted by Wee-Bey Brice on

Terry Richardson had some interesting things to say when speaking with GBW about the difference between this year and last year:

On Defensive scheme:

“We have a new scheme and a lot of in your face coverage"... “Last year we were a little bit conservative," he said. "We have talent... let’s use it. You put your best against our best and let’s ride out -- lets go get it. That is the mindset that our coaches have instilled in us for this season

On Roy Manning:

“This is his first year coaching corner, so we were a little nervous about him, but he is bringing it to us. Coach Manning is keeping us on top of our game. We are working hard. He is a trash talker, he doesn’t play around when it comes to teaching us. He told us I will take a pass interference call as long as you are aggressive. We like that.

On Team Chemistry:

“I will be honest with you... I have never felt that we were a complete team," Richardson admitted. "I felt like we were a team of solos. But this year it is not that way. The simple fact is we are tired of losing. Guys want to play and guys want to win, so we all came together. If you are a starter you are helping out the guy behind you -- not for him to take your spot, but because you really want him to succeed.

The very frickin second I hit the post tab, I realize 3 things. Thing One. Sleep deprivation, and alcohol can effect brain function. Thing B. It was a comment about Dennard, a DB from The E Lansing Bungholes, and not Denard Robinson who does not play for said Bungholes. And the second thing, DPI is defensive pass interference, dummy.

We are going to be more aggressive this year? In think I remember those comments from, oh, every year in history. I am pretty sure when cro magnum man was first asked what he liked about his new hunting scheme in 65,000 bc,he talked about being more aggressive. Really taking it to the wooly mammoths and sitting back and letting them dictate the action.

Cro Magnum?!? Is that a .357 or .44? C'mon man! If you're going to be snarky at least get your facts correct. Maybe it's auto-correct, but ...

An internet smart guy! Everybody's favorite! It is tough to get all spelling correct when using an iPhone, sitting on the porch of the grand hotel, drinking a beer.

Cro magnon...better?

To be honest, I'm not sure if they hunted wooly mammoths either, but perhaps you could fact check me? Double check the 65,000 years for me as well. I was just riffing off the top of my head and didn't consult google.

Just teasing you buddy! If I remember my anthro days at UM I think CM Man was around about 40k ybp, and I think they hunted mammoth. Have some fudge, ride a bike, and enjoy the cool weather. Go Blue!

I like the comments from Terry Richardson too. They addressed some issues that many of us have been concerned about, but there’s no reason to get overly excited about his words. Simply because most players say positive things and talk about improving in certain areas at the start of every season, no matter the sport.

I know everyone here isn’t a Detroit Lions’ fan, but they’re world champions many times counting, when it comes to players talking at the start of a season about how they’ve finally figured things out and will improve. Every year they have us believing they're going to turn the corner. It’s a part of sports. A player is suppose to stay positive and talk about improvements.

They are finally now sick of losing?  The seniors on last year's team were freshmen when we dropped our last three games by a combined total score of 137-49.  Lewan, Schofield, both Gordons, and Gallon were all on the sidelines in 2009, when we went an abysmal 1-7 in Big Ten play.  The guys who were fans before they joined the team probably watched us lose to Appalachian State.  From '08 through '12 this program lost 27 games. Why did we need to lose another six games to be sick of losing?  Losing 10 out of 12 to OSU wasn't enough, but losing 11 out of 13 to OSU is?  This is why I'm not getting too emotionally invested in the whole "team chemistry is better this year" thing.  Maybe it's true and we really will be better this year, but it means that we probably have some other cultural and/or leadership issues that won't be going away soon.
