Tim Howard appreciation thread

Submitted by MGoGrendel on

What a game today and solid performances against Ghana, Portugal (almost a win), and Germany (which scored 4 on Portugal).

His 12 saves in regulation time today were the most of any keeper in Brazil so far, and second most at any World Cup in the past 50 years.

If that was the 12-year veteran's final game for his country, he went out in fitting fashion: even though his team lost, Howard was named man of the match.

So put on your oversized gloves and give the man a round of applause!

That was one of the best goal keeper performances of this world cup. Singlehandedly kept the USA in that game. As a Man U fan I used to watch Howard when he played second fiddle there and never really thought much of him. Leaving Man U was the best thing that could have happened to him as he has steadily improved and now finds himself in the upper teir of goalkeepers in world football. I'm glad for him overall but sad things didn't work out better in this WC. He deserved a better fate.

Was watching replay of his goal against Bolton last night. Apparently he didn't celebrate because he felt bad for the other keeper.

Timmy is awesome, a total class act. I think he will play in Everton for a few more years then move back to MLS before retiring.

Guzan is 29 and almost as good so we are in good hands.

This New Yorker article about Tim Howard is 4 years old now, written right before the US tied England in South Africa, but it is an interesting portrait of Howard, his background, his career in England, his struggle with Tourette's and insistence on dealing with it without medication. I was reminded of it while watching him yesterday, his intensity and ability to carry his team and will them to perform beyond what they were probably capable of:
