Michigan BOR Jordan Acker: I love Harbaugh but I am not interested in negotiating through the public or through the press.
Full text of tweet:
Two things and two things only about this:
1. I love @CoachJim4UM, think he is the best coach in the country, and want him to coach at Michigan for as long as he would like.
2. I am not interested in negotiating through the public or through the press.

Whether it's worth putting up with is a matter of perspective. For example what about the players and coaches? Do they like the uncertainty of whether their head coach is going to be back or not? Publicly they probably support Jim, but privately is probably a different story. It definitely makes recruiting harder for the coaches.
No matter how you look at it, what Jim is doing each year is not good for the program. 2023 was an aberration in that we already had so much talent coming back, so on the surface it looked like Jim's interviewing with the Vikings didn't matter. This year looks a lot different. Michigan isn't getting the transfer portal guys we should be getting, and there's no JJ returning.
But, Harbaugh is who he is and marches to his own drum. Michigan has to accept that as a price for his success on the field.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:40 PM ^
So damaging that we nearly lost a game this year.
I get that this is a stomach wrenching part of the season, but given the like 7 year nature of this, and that we've continually gotten better the past 3 where this has been THE topic in January, I'm doubting is has the negative effect that is claimed. Maybe like Jim when he recruits he lets them know this will always be part of it? And he'll support them when they look too? Kind of just like recruits say that he does.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:45 PM ^
Good point. Just look at how terrible our season was after yet another round of will he or won't he
January 16th, 2024 at 7:53 PM ^
I'm tired of it as well but it doesn't affect recruiting at all like we think. The money we don't pay up front affects recruiting. Kids aren't going to choose a stable Harbaugh at Michigan versus a million dollars to go to Bama or LSU.
January 16th, 2024 at 8:08 PM ^
I would think after this last season we would have somewhere else to focus our ire, namely the NCAA. Getting people riled up over nonsensical and meaningless 'infractions' is what I'm f'ing tired of.
As for this other stuff, I can get used to celebrating championships in January. Let's try to keep some perspective, 'cause this is new and feels really good. It's all a matter of where you choose to focus. And if Harbaugh leaves, I don't see how any of us can have any ill-will, we finally have what we wanted.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:20 PM ^
Maybe don't be in reaction mode to thameltoe tweets for a month and keep delaying his contract.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:20 PM ^
It’s time to move on. Personally I want to see Harbaugh get an nfl job because I want 40-3 with a national title to be his legacy. I’m excited for the future with Sherrone or whoever we can poach and better recruiting classes because we’ll have stability.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:30 PM ^
I share the bulk of your sentiment. I will always love Harbaugh and be grateful for what he has done at Michigan. And of course I want him back. But he seems to really want to go back to the NFL at some point. Now would the ideal time. 40-3 indeed.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:49 PM ^
Our recruiting has done pretty well - the results are on the field.
Michigan’s classes might become slightly higher ranked - but, there’s a limit when you don’t Pay for Play - or - set up a Lamborghini dealership nearby.
I could care less about recruiting class rankings and the number of five stars - IF Michigan can maintain the culture.
This season - the Buckeyes had ten five stars on their roster. Bama had 18. Michigan had two. I’ll take the results of those games every year…
January 16th, 2024 at 8:31 PM ^
I don’t want him to leave because I believe he is the glue and the main selling point of the program. But if he is going to leave, better to go out on top.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:21 PM ^
Then get the f*cking deal done already
January 16th, 2024 at 7:57 PM ^
Harbaugh's gone. We're at the media narrative for his departure stage now
January 16th, 2024 at 8:11 PM ^
there’s no point in signing a deal when the other party requires a “get out of deal free” clause for the next month.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:22 PM ^
Let him go. Stop negotiating. He has a contract already. If he doesn’t want to be here, I want someone who does.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:36 PM ^
Glad you're not the AD.
Jim Harbaugh is the best coach we can get. The dude inherited a 5-7 team and turned it into a powerhouse. U-M needs to stop obsessing over extreme longshot outcomes (us firing him over NCAA findings) and just give him what he wants.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:51 PM ^
BUT WHAT IF THE NCAA EXECUTES HIM ON STATE STREET?? DO YOU WANT TO BE STUCK PAYING A CORPSE??
January 16th, 2024 at 8:05 PM ^
Weekend at Jimmys? Here is the jist. Unalived football coach is propped up by players and coaches but goes on to win more championships than Saban. No more offseason NFL talks!
January 16th, 2024 at 8:12 PM ^
I love Harbaugh and my support has never wavered. Even when most of you wanted him gone. What, however, does a new contract accomplish? He would rather be in the NFL and will go regardless of any contract he has with Michigan.
January 16th, 2024 at 8:13 PM ^
He has an NOA for a level I investigation with a 4+ game suspension outstanding and very clearly another one pending. I think there’s a good chance the NCAA backs down but there’s no reasonable view that looks at the NCAA and calls a year+ suspension an “extreme long shot.”
January 16th, 2024 at 8:31 PM ^
The NCAA takes into account self-imposed (or conference-imposed) suspensions. He's already served six games of those. At this point I think it's doubtful he'd get more than a game or two added on - and the notion that Michigan would fire him over that is extremely unlikely.
Back in the fall, Brian's original prediction for the Stalions punishment was a show-cause for Stalions and fine for the program. That may well be it.
January 16th, 2024 at 8:42 PM ^
The administration and the regents can’t do that or they‘d be in abrogation of their fiduciary duties because obligated to do what is best for the entire university and not just the football program and athletic department. With the uncertainty surrounding the ramifications of the NCAA investigations they would derelict in giving Harbaugh a blank check contract and open themselves up to liability from various stakeholders. Much as I want him to stay, Harbaugh must understand the circumstances that he is confronting. It also has to be said that however minimal the transgressions and stupid the rules are, they are still the rules that the university must abide by as a member of the NCAA. We can’t really blame these wounds on anybody else. They are self-inflicted.
January 16th, 2024 at 8:01 PM ^
I’d prefer to keep the guy who delivered (i) three consecutive wins in The Game, (ii) three consecutive B1G championships and (iii) Michigan’s first undisputed national title since 1948.
He’s the rare coach who succeeds at both the collegiate and pro levels and only lacks the well coiffed hair of Jimmy Johnson and Pete Carroll. He’s the best bet for the continued success of Michigan football. I sure hope Michigan does everything within reason to provide contract terms that keep the Harbaughs in Ann Arbor until Jim decides to retire.
January 16th, 2024 at 8:03 PM ^
God I hate people like you. Let’s just let the best coach in program history walk out the door because you are sick of reading rumors. Maybe we can hire a coach no one wants and never have to worry about this again.
January 16th, 2024 at 8:07 PM ^
Seriously. Some people just need to log off if it makes them that agitated. We're trying to land Moby Dick, get below deck if you can't even watch without whining.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:27 PM ^
Acker needs to get off Twitter more than most people.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:28 PM ^
Except that this tweet was negotiating through the public.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:54 PM ^
Acker loves himself a good paralipsis
January 17th, 2024 at 6:19 AM ^
Don't we all?
January 16th, 2024 at 7:29 PM ^
It’s happening?
January 16th, 2024 at 7:38 PM ^
Sure hope they are working as hard on Michigan Head Coach Plan B.
I sense they are going to need it. And a DC, and probably an OC too.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:56 PM ^
And a strength and conditioning coach.
January 16th, 2024 at 8:46 PM ^
I hope not. We could lose just about everybody else but I think that Herbert and Poggi were the most important coaches outside of Harbaugh in getting the program turned around.
January 16th, 2024 at 9:33 PM ^
The strength coach would most likely not go to the NFL from college, at least not to be a team SC. The money, prestige and challenge is in college for those guys. Most of those players come in developed into the NFL and often have their own SC guys. The money is in college because you are developing 17-18 year olds into first class athletes. There are some SCs that think the NFL is a step down. The SC might become someone's personal coach but I'd be very shocked if he leaves for the NFL based on that.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:41 PM ^
You have to wonder what the B1G sent to Michigan that kept Harbaugh suspended for the final 3 games of the regular season. If Michigan is adamant on keeping the clause of terminating Harbaugh for plausible cause resulting from the investigation, and if Harbaugh wants this clause eliminated from his contract, then there is probably something serious in the what the B1G found against Harbaugh that the NCAA may come down on Harbaugh for. I am just throwing this out there as an opinion.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:51 PM ^
I hear your point.
My question - what NCAA rule / guideline that was associated with Advanced Scouting was broken?
January 16th, 2024 at 8:06 PM ^
What is the point of your question? That you believe no rule was broken and therefore the NCAA won't hand down a penalty?
January 16th, 2024 at 8:18 PM ^
My question - what NCAA rule / guideline that was associated with Advanced Scouting was broken?
I can’t believe we’re still doing this. The guy was an active analyst dressed up in a disguise on the opponent sideline of future opponent. There’s no fake news witch hunt here, it’s overblown, but there were very clearly rules violated.
January 16th, 2024 at 8:29 PM ^
I mean, we have the pics from Central that could be Connor. That’s all I know of. Everything else I’ve heard is him arranging for 3rd parties to attend games, which doesn’t break any rules.
Is there evidence that Connor was at multiple games himself? Even if so, precent for such a violation is half a game suspension for the individual in question per advanced scouting attempt.
Connor is already gone permanently and the NCAA has already said there’s no evidence that Harbaugh knew or was involved in any way so…
January 16th, 2024 at 8:52 PM ^
A rule is a rule whether we like it or not. Whether it is a stupid rule or an outdated rule is beside the point. We had someone on staff who broke that rule and got caught. We now must face the consequences. There is no one else to blame here.
Biff Poggi said that the Big Ten coaches whining about losing to us "should get a better team" if they didn’t like the results. Likewise, if we don‘t want to go through this now or in the future we should get a better compliance department.
January 16th, 2024 at 9:55 PM ^
No, how about either the NCAA both investigate and punish every team in America for every rule violation, from minor to major, or they back the fuck off over cheeseburgers and sign bullshit. You have programs like TN who had like 16 level 1 violations and it was barely news and then this is the crime of the century? You have teams obliterating the actual legalities of NIL, portal tampering, etc and this is the shit they are worried about? Florida St had the audacity to speak out against the committee for getting left out of the CFP and what did they get? A NOA for the same shit 100 other teams are doing equal to or worse. Big money and corruption at its finest!
How about everyone fucking man up and say what their real agenda against Jim is? “Hey, I’m so and so and I’m from the media, bigten, ncaa, tv networks, AD’s office, rival program, etc and we all want Jim to leave college football for our own selfish reasons”.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:57 PM ^
Ive read that the BIG asked Michigan to take the 3 games and not fight it like they were going to or else they would push for more games which would ensure he'd miss potential Big Ten championship and playoffs. Harbaugh bowed down because he could still coach the team 6 days of the week during the suspension.
The ncaa has already said they have no evidence Harbaugh was aware of Stalions operation.
Michigan is adamant about no immunity because if the ncaa bans him for years they don't want to have to pay Harbaugh and another head coach. The University has to protect themselves even from the unlikely event of a harsh punishment.
January 16th, 2024 at 8:10 PM ^
Ive read that the BIG asked Michigan to take the 3 games and not fight it like they were going to or else they would push for more games which would ensure he'd miss potential Big Ten championship and playoffs.
I fucking hate this. I hate the fucking conference. They first asked for two games. We said no so they said, fine, it's three. We said, you're breaking your rules now we have to sue, and they said okay now it's six! This is what gangsters do in the movies.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:42 PM ^
I’ll get negged but why is it so hard to be a Michigan fan? I’m still reveling that UM won the national championship but still see there is so much disagreement between everyone. “Insiders” do not know shit. BOR do not know shit. Hell, Harbs and Warde sound like it’s spotty at best. Why coming off a perfect 15-0 season can people not figure this shit out? Seems like everyone is trying to one up each other and not come to terms (I get it, the impasse). Why is it that we have to become divisive again? Why is it that after 2 decades of hell, and coming off a national championship, does Michigan shoot themselves in their foot? Why can we not get any fucking stability?!
Also, these pretzels are making me thirsty
January 16th, 2024 at 8:07 PM ^
99 out of 100 Michigan fans are having the time of their lives right now; they're eight days removed from a National Championship. The other 1% are on this board.
January 16th, 2024 at 8:45 PM ^
Underrated comment.
January 16th, 2024 at 9:17 PM ^
Yeah, you absolutely nailed it. We’re all the 1% degenerates regardless of which side we’re on. Any sports media outlets and social media are talking about this. I’m still enjoying the chest pumped out and wearing my UM gear throughout high st in Columbus. The Harbaugh contract has been talked about in circles. The three years of success and there is always some sort of questionable conundrum. Even being successful is hard for the Wolverines regardless of inner or outer issues. As more comes out it seems we keep going down this hole where it’s all shit and muddled that any party may or may not be right/wrong. Let’s choose a path and move on.
January 16th, 2024 at 9:53 PM ^
Well, if I see someone walking down High St. in UM gear anytime soon, I'll wonder if it's you! It has definitely been more fun wearing UM gear around here by the win, starting with the Game and continuing all the way through the national championship.
Also - are they going to get rid of the "Undisputed" street sign at Lane and High? Of course not, but now that shot at Michigan is obsolete.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:51 PM ^
Hey you.... Jim's social media scout guy..... tell Jim, from me, westernwolverine, to think of the chickens
Jim, you've built this coup right next to your parents home in Ann Arbor, MICHIGAN, one of the top places to raise a family in the entire world.......now let it run for a while and harvest some more eggs. Don't chase fame. Be yourself. Beat Ohio.
January 16th, 2024 at 7:53 PM ^
This is not that hard: Harbaugh wants to win a Super Bowl, so is exploring his options. Michigan wants him locked in forever. Thus, impasse. Everything else is fundamentally bullsht.
