Purdue HC Ryan Walters on Michigan allegations: "We'll plan accordingly."

https://www.mlive.com/wolverines/2023/10/purdue-aware-of-sign-stealing-allegations-against-michigan-will-plan-accordingly.html

This is the second team that is playing us after the Stalions story broke. The first team only got the news three days ahead of time (not counting the two years that OSU had been sending everyone emails to warn them with the subject "URGENT: IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED").

The first team we played threatened to not play the game for the health and safety of their players. They then decided to play with their QB running to the sideline to have their "throw incomplete pass" and "run for TFL" plays whispered into his ear.

Purdue is the first team we play that got real advanced notice. More than two weeks. I've been wondering what their plan is.

Walters was asked how he thought the allegations might impact Michigan on Saturday.

“I’m not sure,” he said. “My focus is on us and our team. Obviously we’re very aware of what the allegations are out there.

“We’ll plan accordingly.”

Not surprisingly, he's not saying much about it. One would hope they would just use wristbands since that should pretty much eliminate the issue altogether.

He also couldn't help but make what I assume was a slight dig at UM when talking about the defense:

“When they are out of position, albeit (only) a few times, they’ve got guys that can make up for it and overcome some of the maybe schematical errors or mental errors throughout the course of a play.”

Only out of position a few times har har. Or I don't know, maybe that was a real compliment.

One MGoPoint to you if you knew that the Purdue head ball coach was named Ryan Walters.

I did not know his name. I caught a few minutes of their game against Iowa. They didn't hurry up when they still had a chance. Ryan Walters appears to be another regular CFB head coach.

Seriously....what are other teams doing about EVERY OTHER team that we all have been told are trying to steal signs? Don't teams already have a (hopefully robust) method of keeping other teams guessing on their signs?

In the military we called this counter-intelligence. A necessary part of any business that requires strategy.

Yea, plan accordingly to do something you already should be doing.  All of these teams have the ability to disguise their signals and should always be looking to do that.  This is a known thing.  They all have the ability to negate any advanced sign stealing.

I watched some of Purdue this past weekend.  They were lifeless.  They made Nebraska look good.

It’s too bad the only way we can beat them is by stealing their signs.  At least that’s what the narrative will be.  Oh well.  Hope the starters are done by halftime.

Unfortunately, anything but total domination will be interpreted as having occurred bc we couldn't cheat. Therefore, we must totally dominate the nation.

It sounded to me like he realized what he had just said could be minor bulletin board material and so he quickly qualified it. No biggie. “We’ll plan accordingly” = water is wet.  What else is he going to say?

To be clear, I was not intending to convey that "We'll plan accordingly" was him throwing shade. It's just that was the only semi-substantive thing he said about Michigan's sign stealing saga. I am genuinely curious what teams are going to actually do about it, if anything, MSU's performative bullshit notwithstanding.

As for the other quote about how we're almost always in the right position, I honestly wasn't sure if he meant it as a joke or if it was earnest. Maybe I would have had a better read on it if I heard it instead of just read it. Regardless, I've been sufficiently chastised in this thread and am more than willing to give him the P.J. Fleck Badge of Respect.

That was as vanilla as vanilla gets. And to his point, Michigan's defense has been out of position a couple of times. Probably explains the Rutgers 75 yard TD bust or the long Nebraska TD, which admittedly was in garbage time but still he's not wrong.

Walters will probably have a very nasty defense in West Lafayette in the next 2-3 years, but I don't think there's a whole lot to be concerned about with them this Saturday.

That's gold, jerry.

I’d really like to see us run for 250+ yards with a few explosives from Corum and Edwards.  It’s the one thing we’ve been missing thus far this season, and more importantly, would instill even more fear and uncertainty into PSU and OSU for the upcoming games.

Teams have been selling out to stop the run, but they did so last year and we’re still gashed.  This is basically the only hand wringing any of us could have about this team’s on field performance this year.

Out of curiosity, has any active head coach actually come out and criticized Michigan on the record? Feels like the only criticism comes from the occasional talking head with their own scandal ridden team history or anonymous quotes.

People claimed Dan Lanning did, but the only quotes I saw from him said, in effect, his Georgia defense kicked our ass (which means our sign stealing was worthless) and also that it's on you to make sure your signs don't get stolen. So I don't where this "Lanning attacked Michigan" idea came from, other than that he mocked us for our CFP appearance versus UGA.

People also said Kyle Whittingham came out against us. He said that going to other stadiums to steal signs is "dicey" which, yeah, it is dicey.

Bob Stoops needed a fainting couch. But he's not an active coach.

Purdue is an awful team this year.  Very mistake prone.  It wouldn’t shock me to see the defense have multiple TDs on turnovers.

They have some good players but not enough.  I suspect most Michigan players who are dressed to play at some point.

So will we!  it's called game film.  And wasn't Purdue one of the teams that a story was written on as one of the top teams in the B1G of stealing signs?  I believe it was Michigan, OSU (Surprise!), Purdue, and Indiana.  This probably dates back prior to this year.

I think Walters knows better than to poke UM too hard especially given the fact he thought playing man coverage vs. Marvin Harrison Jr. was the right move.

He's not wrong about any of it.  Every single play has something wrong - a player out of position, a play scheme putting a player in the wrong position, the wrong call for a certain play, etc.  Nothing he said was a dig at Michigan.  Sounded pretty complimentary to me, actually...

Only out of position a few times har har. Or I don't know, maybe that was a real compliment.

I took that as a genuine compliment: that they rarely make mistakes, and when they have good athletes who can make up for it to mitigate the damage most of the time.

It's an engineering school with lots of aspiring rocket surgeons. Pretty sure their plan is:

1. Invent time travel machine.

2. Return to 1964.

3. Profit!

We should never lest MSU forget their immediate response to Spygate:

They threatened to not play the game for the health and safety of their players lolz lol

That is the weakest shit I've seen lolz lol
