Today’s harbaugh reading

Neg if you want. My insider friends thought contract would be done by now but it appears Jim is serious about nfl.  Biggest caveat is complete control including $$$ on players.  Only one likely to give that is Las Vegas.  Bisaccia interview is crucial-  hope he crushes it.
He loves Michigan but believes only Nd has potentially harder issues w recruiting given school, academia, administration and AND fanbase expectations.

Yep. Not worried about my mgopoints.  Can’t take then w you, lol.

My reason for posting was that this info - which you can believe is from a very close insider or not , I could give a f—-  - is that it’s bad news in that there is a situation he has determined he would leave for - he’s gone through his mental checklist and knows what he wants.   The good news is that it’s highly unlikely and the potential threat is well known.

yes, we’ve been circling Vegas for awhile as a suspect but not even many insiders knew the specificity of his desired outcomes/choices.  And no he’s not making direct calls. He has others for that. He is always consistent in doing the job he’s currently being paid for w enthusiasm unknown to mankind.

I know the Raiders aren't known for making sound business decisions (lol Gruden contract)....but it is insane to give the NFL head coach full control over the roster unless you are hiring Bill Belichick himself.  I know coaches WANT that control but in a sport with a complex salary cap that turns over coaches every 2-3 years you can't give that power to the coach....and certainly not a guy who hasn't been in the league for a while.  Ask the Texans or Jets how that worked out for them.

Harbaugh is a top 10 head coach at any level (NFL or college)

He would be competing for national titles or Super Bowls if at a college football factory or NFL respectively.

What’s a realistic ceiling at UM under the  current paradigm?  Beat OSU 25% of the time?  Maybe 33% ?

Assuming we make it to the OSU game with the Big East on the line - as seems to be the median likely outcome for Harbaugh coached UM seasons, he needs to most likely beat 3 teams with superior payrolls and talent to reach the pinnacle…(OSU, SEC, other football factory)

If he wants to compete on an equal playing field, I wouldn’t blame Jim for leaving. Hoping he stays and the university commits to competing with the football factories.

Being the head coach and general manager has rarely worked in the NFL. Bill Belichick may actually be the only successful example... and you could question that.

Funny how a guy who some think does not have an agent/agency representing him also think he's asking for complete financial control of an NFL team. Those two don't go together.

I won't neg but this place is lousy with "insiders" and "insider friends" that are extremely unreliable.  The longer this goes on the more likely Harbaugh will jump, but I'd also remind everyone that last year the extension he signed took a longer time.

I do think Harbaugh is listening to LV but I also think people are overrated how appealing LV is as a football spot next year beyond the base "it's an NFL team".  Carr and Waller are both FAs and they're going to want big deals, the roster doesn't have a ton of young, good talent (and that was before Ruggs was kicked off the team), and they don't have a lot of draft capital thanks to Gruden's various trades.  And their "success" of making it to the playoffs this year was a bit of a mirage; they wound up playing a bunch of teams with backup QBs to end the year and still won their last 4 games by a combined 12 points.  So there's a real chance they regress a bit next year and Harbaugh is looking at a 2-3 year rebuild to even be competitive in a tough AFC West.

Why does it become more likely that he jumps the longer this goes on?   There seem to be two theories about why Harbaugh has not signed a new Michigan contract.

1. He is waiting to see what the NFL has to offer.   In this case, he is going to wait til they offer.   If he decides to stay, it won’t be until he gets that offer.   Whether he stays is dependent on the quality of the offer, not the time it takes to get the offer.

2. The University is waiting for the dust to settle on Schissel and the settlement.   In this case the decision has already been made, we just don’t know it.

I think the general sentiment is that if Harbaugh wanted to stay and wasn't considering NFL offers he'd have nipped this in the bud earlier.  The fact he's taking these calls and meetings with the various pro teams, even if just exploratory, shows a willingness to consider "greener pastures" even if only a bit.  I'm not saying it's extremely likely; he undoubtedly knows the ballpark of an offer he'd receive from LV or Chicago and money doesn't seem to be the sticking point.

I do think #2 may be weighing on the proceedings more, and so that could be a factor.  But in general the longer you have someone waiting to accept your offer the more likely it is he may be considering the other ones credibly.

Not much. Basically what he's said throughout: doesn't think JH is leaving but it's possible with Raiders most likely destination. Only new thing is it might be possible to read tea leaves depending on who Raiders hire as GM. Otherwise talk about what happens if JH left (basically internal more likely so as to retain staff, Gattis makes most sense, again though no specific intel

Harbaugh said "I'd work for free" at UM and constant says "Who's got it better than us?" so it seems logical that he won't leave.  Please.  He's such a bullshitter.  He prefers not to coach at UM anymore.  Its fairly obvious.

when i was in high school, i was fortunate to be able to watch the late, lamented david letterman daytime show for a summer.  it's not an overstatement to say it formed my comedic instincts.

since it was a daytime show on nbc, there was a daily 2- or 3-minute newsbreak inserted into the bump to one of the ad breaks, and letterman, as was his wont, couldn't resist taking a surreal approach.  there were a couple of occasions where he'd cut to the newsguy at his desk (in studio, if i recall correctly), who would solemnly intone...

"here is an nbc news update.  the update is that there is no update.  things are as they were, with no appreciable change in the situation.  at this time, nbc news believes that the situation will continue to develop along this path.  we will provide updates as they occur.  thank you."

just keep reading this, and you won't need to keep posting crap.

PFF quoting Bruce Feldman says;

Harbaugh could leave if offered by the Raiders!

Which is a little like saying the Statue of Liberty could topple if Liberty Island was hit with  an earthquake.

Out of all the speculative nonsense, the thing upon which I put zero weight is the "Harbaugh met his wife in Las Vegas."

So? Is that where she's originally from? Do her parents or older children live there? If not, then it just means she lived there at one time in her life. Anyone who's ever been married knows that unless her mom currently lives in Las Vegas, it means almost nothing.

Over the weekend I thought Harbaugh was going to leave. But the Raider's players do not want Harbaugh and when the final decision is made, I think Davis will not pick Harbaugh. My confidence level has now gone back to 60/40 that Harbaugh stays. The only other job he may take is Chicago but I doubt he will. I think as far as the NFL goes it Vegas or bust for Harbaugh.

I think word has gotten around after he coached the NFL 49ers. It was the players who got him fired. Harbaugh was running them like college kids. It could be part of the equation that they want their interim coach but I also heard one of the talking heads on the NFL network yesterday afternoon that the Vegas players did not want Harbaugh as well. If enough are against it, I don't see Davis hiring Harbaugh even though he may want to. I think its our only hope because if Davis offers him the job he's gone.

Some of this is hard to credit, as Harbaugh has said he wants Michigan to have scholar athlete standards similar to those at Stanford. He has been emphasizing academics, from everything I have heard since his arrival.

Thank you, O.P. Good post and obvious inside color. No idea why anyone would neg this, though obviously I wish it wasn't true. And yes, we can be an insufferable fan base.  JH has given way more to this program than we've given to him. He owes us nothing but damn I hope he stays.
