MSU @ OSU: Whose loss are you rooting harder for?

Submitted by Remember_the_G… on November 14th, 2021 at 7:56 AM

[I'll preface this with the prerequisite "Just beat Maryland" but I am a fan not a player or coach so these are the thoughts running through my head with two weeks left in the season.]

With Michigan's two most hated rivals facing off in the time slot before our game @ Maryland this Saturday, I have to ask whose loss the board is pulling for harder. If we can beat Maryland we have the following scenarios:

1) MSU loses

- The Game is a winner take all for the East Division crown.

2) OSU loses then MSU controls their own destiny:

- MSU wins against Penn State in East Lansing the following weekend they clinch the East

- MSU loses then The Game again becomes a winner take all.

So... who do you want to lose?

Sadly, we have to root for OSU

If the Spartans can beat the Buckeyes in the 'Shoe, they're going to beat Penn State at home.

We gotta root for OSU, and that in the process of winning they lose half their offense for at least one game.

Worst post ever.  You must be young, aside from dumb.  For the true Michigan fan wants OSU to win every game, except one. It's what helped make our rivalry the biggest in sports.   If they were middling, our rivalry would be shit.   Its greatness was because both programs were exceptional for so long, and now it's been at risk because we haven't carried our weight.

Fuck that.

I don't want them to win every game, but one. But when they destroy MSU next Saturday, I won't be mad.

I don't give a shit about the rivalry to the point I want them to win when they're not playing Michigan. My hated for them FAR exceeds any love I have for the rivalry.

They can go 0-12 from now until forever. I'll live.

Yeah this is ridiculous. I'm sure everyone has said it but I'll say it too. How is there even a question. By the way you forgot the shittiest of scenarios. Osu loses by a hair, obliterates us, MSU wins the big ten title game and somehow the committee decides that a two loss osu team is better than the rest and they both fucking go to the playoff.

Let osu win an ugly slugfest where MSU takes 100 cheap shots leaving osu battered..13-11... Hit stroud so he loses his confidence, and let Hutchinson and ojabo feast on the main course!!!

It's not a dumb thread because you're a fan and not a player/coach (where I agree, people get way too worked up...so I understand your point there).

But it's a dumb thread because you're asking a question with only one answer.

Sorry but so much of the commentary on this thread is ridiculous.

These aren’t real questions. Who do you root for? Michigan that’s who. And because you root for Michigan you sure as hell shouldn’t be hoping the Buckeyes lose. The goal of the team you all follow is to win championships.
In this scenario we can’t root for other chancy improbable scenarios to happen. That absolutely means rooting against MSU. If you aren’t rooting for an MSU loss next week then you’re not rooting for Michigan.

MSU won a game that even though we shot ourselves in the foot was greatly aided by horrific officiating and has now put the program in a shit position. MSU needs to lose next weeks game. They don’t need any more momentum, especially for recruiting and anyone not realizing how MSU winning doesn’t greatly help them long term as well as short term doesn’t follow Michigan football realistically. OSU and MSU have had so many breaks fall for them over the last 20 years, especially during the Harbaugh era and it would be nice for that pendulum to swing our way for once.

As a fan you root for Michigan. Rooting for Michigan makes this “decision” easy. You aren’t rooting for OSU. That is silly. You’re rooting for Michigan. You’re rooting for a scenario that best helps the team that you’re a fanatic for.

Congrats on the dumbest post of all time.. sure let's root for msu to win so all they have to do is beat an injured penn state team at home so they go to the big title game...

Dumbass post

Osu needs to crush msu so it sets us up for a defacto playoff game like in 2016 in Ann arbor on the final Saturday of the season.

Is this post a joke?  All UM fans regard The Great Evil as our arch-nemesis.  Nevertheless, UM fans must root for that team down south.  Otherwise Sparty wins the B1G east (Sparty is at home vs PSU.  Sparty will defeat PSU), and Michigan cannot play in the B1G championship game, which also eliminates UM from getting into the CFP.

No one hates The Great Evil more than I do, but unfortunately, we must root for OSU this week.

It's like rooting for Hitler over Stalin.  It's evil vs evil.  There is no morality superior team to root for.  We have no choice. In the long-term this season, for our team, we must root for The Great Evil over Sparty.

Put down the crack pipe and go to bed, folks. Neither we nor MSU have defenses capable of stopping OSU.

"But miracles happen, look, Kansas just beat Texas!"

"Texas is not a shining example of recent success."

"So, you're saying Giant Meteor?"

I'm worried about this game. Ohio State has a history of playing down to MSU and getting upset by them, and this is increasingly likely this year since OSU's minds might be more focused on the following week's Michigan game and not MSU. Need OSU to win.

Obviously, the correct answer is you should want MSU to lose. That said, I am 100% hoping (not gonna root) that the Buckeyes lose for a few reasons.

  1. Michigan wins their last two, they are in the playoffs. An 11-1 Michigan is going to supersede the PAC-12, Big 12, ACC and Cinci.
  2. Michigan could still go to Indy if Sparty slips up against PSU. (which is 100% possible if Clifford is able to play)
  3. I live in Ohio and nothing feels better than an OSU loss. (not to mention, very solid chance that they could finish the year on a three game losing streak)
  4. Mel Tucker is 100% gone if he beats Michigan & OSU in the same year.
  5. See part 3 again, Ohio State losses feel so great.

In most years, your logic is sound to me. The idea of OSU ending the season on a potential 3 game losing streak would me a-maize-ing. I just believe OSU losing to Michigan and Bowl Game would achieve the same results without diminishing the accomplishment of national perspective. Imagine:

1) Gameday blowout of MSU launches OSU hype (elevates their fanbase)

2) Gameday follow-up loss to Michigan crushes said Buckeye fanbase

3) OSU NFL players sit-out of Bowl Game

Michigan gains win needed to finally move towards changing our November culture. OSU fans downplay results for the time being, then create QB & coaching controversy going into the 2022 season. The opportunity to catch up to OSU would finally be possible.

(obvious caveat: beat Maryland)

My rooting order every week of college football.

1) Meeechigan fer goodness sakes

Then,

2a) Whomever is playing OSU (unless it directly affects implications for team mentioned above).

2b) Whomever is playing ND (unless it directly affects implications for team mentioned above).

3a) The lower ranked/unranked team playing against a ranked opponent ahead of Michigan.

3b) The lower ranked/unranked team playing against an SEC opponent.

Somewhere down the line:

- other B1G teams (minus OSU and MSU)

- teams going against former college greats who have fallen and trying to return

Definitely want OSU to beat MSU, as it puts us in better position to make the Rose Bowl even if we lose to OSU, and the playoff if somehow we beat OSU (which I don’t expect to happen).

Are your stupid? Why in hells name would you root for MSU? There is no way in hell that Penn state team will beat them in 2 weeks and we need them to lose to have a shot at Indy

Is it too soon for Warde to start putting together a reffing squad composed of some state of Michigan hall of famers who actively root for Michigan? The B1G owes us. Gotta take care of home field when 10-1 OSU shows up.

MSU has had one of the luckiest seasons to date. They were pistol whipped by Nebraska, outplayed by lowly Indiana, and had a highly ref assisted win against us, before Purdue exposed them for the frauds they are. Even Maryland could have one but did everything they could to hand the victory to the Spartans. They've given up well over a mile of passing yardage in their last 3 games (1300 yards!) less than Washington has given up all year, yet their insufferable fan base still thinks Tucker is the second coming they are playoff bound.

I don't just want to see them lose. I want to see them get obliterated. I'd like to see a score of 52-14 with Stroud passing for 600 yards.  Then I want to see Dotson set a record against them the following week.

I don't know if I'm being clear but I'd  rather see MSU lose.

Given the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two teams, it's certainly likely that you'll get your wish.

Unfortunately, we're in pretty much the same boat.

I'm not seeing news of any giant meteors approaching Earth, but one can always hope for obliteration of the two teams by aliens from outer space.

One off-thought.  Both Staee and us win out.  Staee loses B1G championship game to Wiscy.  Committee takes us in the ultimate blow of disrespekt.

This is a silly question. An MSU loss helps Michigan, therefore it is preferable.

Beyond the obvious (MSU loss makes The Game winner-gets-the-division if Michigan takes care of their College Park business), MSU losing to OSU means they can also lose to PSU, finish with three losses, and be behind M in the bowl pecking order regardless of the outcome of M-OSU. Which would be cosmic Justice for their “win” a couple weeks ago.
