Would you hire Urban Meyer to coach Michigan?

Submitted by UM85 on February 13th, 2021 at 12:08 PM

Given the latest disclosure on Urban and knowing what you know about him as a person and also his ability to deliver victories and championships, if you were AD at Michigan, would you hire Urban Meyer to be head coach of the football team (assume money is not an issue)?

It might just be worth hiring him just to see the threads on the board after he was hired.

As to people worried about controversy or violations I'm sure the NCAA I'm sure Central Michigan will learn from our experiences.

No. A thousand times no. He'd win a lot of games but leave the program with a slick film of sleaze -- just like every other program he's led. Football is great. But the school's reputation is 1000 times more important.

Said this in the last Urban thread but still my answer:

I somewhat facetiously said to hire Urban (as the season was burning). I don't think he would honestly ever be a candidate for UM and was practicing some light nihilism from deep within my BPONE.

Why ask this? Meyer himself would never come to AA and Michigan will not hire a coach with such baggage. Meyer will do well in the NFL and will not  be in college anymore

Funny how many liars there are in here.

A large portion about this fanbase has no problems with standing on their integrity high horse when it's the other guy...

... but totally rationalize things internally.  e.g., Chris Webber:

  • "everyone cheats";
  • "hang the banners";
  • "time to re-unite the Fab 5"...

even though Webber took the money, was told NOT to take the money and did it anyway, and then lied under oath about it in a court of law.

If Urban was at U of M and was winning the B1G, getting in the CFP, and beating OSU, 90% of you would put a statue of him in front of Schembechler Hall.

Neg away hypocrites.

comparing apples and oranges with huge dissimilarities.

18 yr old kid offered $ from multi-school booster (not a dedicated U of M guy), lies about it a few years later.  nearly 30 yrs pass. remorse shown.  he and any rational fan of college sports of every stripe sees the unbelievable dishonesty that the NCAA tolerates or wrist slaps or nothing at all - UNC academics, CFB and MBB coaches caught on wire taps buying players, whores, whatever.  time to hang the banners.

vs.

undoubtedly supremely talented but fully grown/mature man who repeatedly creates scandal about himself (adultery at UF; lying about z. smith, + others) and his programs, lies repeatedly even for the reasons he's leaving his various jobs, and is basically amoral.

1000% correct. The Michigan fan base and their hypocrisy knows no boundaries! The Fab 5, Gibbons cover up by the athletic dept and 90% of its football team majoring in General Studies. UM has a reputation to hold up buddy

Don't forget about "online U"...

...which IIRC correctly was a fave slight used by WD as he looked down his nose at OSU.

Even though that guy is also on the record saying that he doesn't care about Michigan's academics -- only the athletics.

Good thing I never said integrity is subjective.  What I did say is that one thing is worse than another thing.  Just like how shoving someone isn't as bad as smacking them with a beer bottle.

Congrats on earning your obtuse shitposter badge today.  Please enjoy it and leave the rest of us alone

Good thing I never said integrity is subjective.

Cool, cool, cool...

... so not are you only integrity challenged, you're pedantic too.

Of course I didn't "say" what you're trying to attribute to me.  But you're certainly demonstrating it.

Your maize and blue colored glasses are blinding you from seeing that Webber's LYING, isn't really any different than Meyer's LYING.

LOL!

Troll on clown.

I still support Harbaugh and hope he’s able to turn things around. But if we had a chance this year to secure a commitment from Meyer behind the scenes, I would’ve traded him for Jim in a heart beat.

Nope.

The only benefit would be watching heads explode in Columbus when we'd finally beat the ohio football school and that is outweighed for us by the warning in Mark 8:36:

"For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Personally no I wouldn’t want him because of the person he is. But I’m surprised how everyone is saying no. Especially over the last few months people have been saying we should do everything else urban is about to win a couple of more game. Get bagmen, lower academic standards just do whatever all the cheating schools do basically do what schools where Urban has coaches do

Remember that Urban was too damaged for USC to hire. Let that sink in for a minute and then answer.

Resounding no. And you are clearly not watching how Michigan runs it’s athletic department if you think that this is remotely a possibility.

As a matter of fact, if this were to happen by some horrible mismanagement, it is one of the few things that would cause me to leave all of this behind.

So stated and memorialized for the record forever.

I'm going to give a contrary opinion: it depends.

I think that no one of us really knows Urban Meyer.  Oh sure, we THINK we do, based on what we read in the media.  Two thoughts: (1) how much of our media diet is slanted against all things OSU and Meyer?  (2) Have you ever read any articles in the media about what you do for a living, or something you know very well?  How often have they gotten it totally wrong?  If they are doing that in something you know well, they are just as likely to be doing it in other areas.

All I'm saying is that it's possible we are wrong about him.  Hypothesize with me.  It's possible he was win at all costs at Florida and OSU because that is what their culture demands.  What was his rep coaching at Utah?  I don't recall any reports he was egregious there.  As to whether he would ever come to Ann Arbor, I seem to recall reports that Michigan was one of the jobs listed in an exit clause in his Utah contract.  Of course, those reports (or lack thereof) could be totally wrong.  All I'm saying is we don't really know.

If I were in charge of a FB HC search at Michigan, I would gather a ton of information that is not available to all of us spitballing on websites Michigan fans.  I would ask a lot of questions from people with direct knowledge about his programs.  Lastly, I would interview Meyer and ask him about his vision for a future Michigan program.  I'd put the issue of "culture" (i.e. we don't juice our players; we expect them to work towards a degree; we are not on the leading edge of the best bagging practices; and we have a fanbase with an um...unique opinion of Michigan's rightful place in CFB and a local media culture of Spartan slappies just itching to blow a whistle on Michigan) right on the table and ask him how he would navigate it.

Genius coaches (and be honest, Urban is one of them) are adaptable.  He was just win baby earlier in his career.  He may have a pretty good idea how to make Michigan better within its constraints.  Possibly, the fact he doesn't bleed Maize and Blue will allow him to be patient in ways that a "Michigan Man" is not, or avoid unhelpful "traditions."  I think it is not likely; however, we fans should realize we actually know very little.

Some decent thoughts here, but I think this may be a reach for the sake of the argument.

First of all, what media diet is there to be that different on Meyer? This isn't politics where 80% of outlets are skewed. It's ESPN and a few others. There's not that many takes on covering up and protecting a domestic abuser (though reality is up for debate now more than ever, it seems).

Second, it's hard to say about the culture. From his comments on taking the Jacksonville job, he doesn't just take a job to move up the ladder, he really investigates it. Maybe Florida and OSU were already like that--or at least open to it--upon his arrival.

THIRD.... I didn't know that about Umich in his exit clause. I thought I remembered hearing Notre Dame was one, and that he really liked Joe Paterno, too. . .

Who am I kidding? I would.

Sure, he might have some humiliating scandal for the football program and leave in 5-7 years. But we’ve got something pretty damn humiliating going on right now. An eight game losing streak to our rival, lost I think 16 of the last 18, and there is no end in sight. In fact it looks like it’s somehow about to get worse, as both programs are clearly heading in different directions.

Meyer may have left UF and OSU amid some controversy, but if you ask either one of those fan bases  if they regret him being there, I’d bet just about all their fans say “not one damn day of it.” At some point, you need to just shut up and win. Which Michigan has not been able to do.

I'd hire him in a heartbeat. I mean, it would be a complete no-brainer.

It's pretty rich to see the same collection of Michigan fans who come here fall after fall pounding their keyboards to FIRE Harbaugh / Hoke / Rodriguez / Carr are also so above hiring one of the best 3 coaches in all of football. One of the few people who could actually possibly turn Michigan into a great program again.

Here's another question....would you hire Dabo Sweeney to coach Michigan?
