Brandon Quinn just released an article on The Athletic that details the finer details of Josh Christopher's recruitment. Obviously The Athletic is paywalled, but Quinn posted some screen shots of the article that I think tell plenty of details if you don't have a subscription like me.

Basically, Josh Christopher's father basically said that their main factor in picking a school was developing and increasing Josh's brand. He said "A college shouldn't be above a kid coming in and changing the direction of the school" and basically wanted the red carpet rolled out for him. Every decision that they made in the recruitment was calculated towards Josh's future pro prospects and earning endorsements. Josh is even planning on releasing a clothing line.

In my opinion, this is the exact type of kid we don't want in the future. We want someone who is going to buy into the culture and what Juwan and the university has to offer. It honestly sounds like Christopher was scared his light wouldn't shine quite bright enough if he came to Ann Arbor and personally I'm fine with that

The NBA would help college basketball out (and themselves) by going to a modified version of Major League Baseball’s rules.  MLB allows kids to get drafted out of HS.  If they sign, they sign.  If they don’t and decide to go the college route, they have to wait 3 years before entering the draft again.

in baseball, where rookies can be 24-25, the 3-years in college doesn’t matter. Most kids are still too young to impact the majors right away - even the best will have some seasoning in the minors after their 3 college years.

It’s different in basketball - mostly because there really are no minor leagues and roster size is much smaller, so I’d modify the rule and make it 2 years.  Let kids get drafted out of HS.  Will only be a handful or so, but it allows kids who have no interest in school to get a start on their career.  Those that end up going to school are now there for at least 2 years, which alleviates some of the craziness of building college rosters while also giving extra time for NBA to scout.  It still won’t be perfect - but I think it would be a significant improvement over the current system.

I totally agree with this.   Hockey also has a similar system.

As I understand it, in baseball a player can be drafted out of HS.  He can then decided to go pro or go to college.  If he goes to college, he has to stay for 3 yrs and then he goes back into the draft pool.   If drafted out of HS, the MLB team has to make an offer to get the kid to go pro.   If he doesn't like the offer he just continues on to college.   Not sure that the NBA will be able to outbid Kansas....lol.

In Hockey, I believe the NHL team owns the player all the way thru college.   The big difference with hockey is that the NCAA is not as elite as OHL and may arguably be below some of the other amateur leagues.   I admit that I am very confused by MLB and even moreso NHL drafts.

Disgusting. Looks like we got away with one here. Could you imagine John Beilein kissing this kids father’s ass agreeing to promote his son’s brand to come to play basketball at Michigan?

NCAA is making money off the kid...why can’t the kid make money off himself. Plus all that was known in the Sam Webb article months ago...can’t complain about it now when any of us would’ve took him 48 hours ago in a heartbeat.

Nah.

I would have agreed with you in earlier threads where folks were expressing their disappointment with his decision.

But after reading:

a college shouldn't be above a kid coming in and changing the direction of the school

That's a game changer.  It's okay to criticize this kid thinking he's bigger than one of the leading institutions in the world.

If anyone is “butthurt” it’s you joining today and posting this. Wonder what your motivations are.

Get over yourself. Much bigger things going on right now than shit that’s not gonna matter when there’s no college basketball season anytime soon.

I don’t think you know how to read.

Very few butthurt and salty people.  Most are thinking “man, we just dodged a bullet.”

JC likely wouldn’t have won Michigan a title.  One and dones never do, with few rare exceptions.

Most of us here root for the team, not the player.  JC would be a hell of a player then bail.  To actually win, you need experienced players, unselfish players, guys with guts and class.  These things are not JC

Not to mention I think most are questioning the logic in picking a PAC 12 team with no history of winning if he wants the build his brand. But those quotes scream a dude with a giant ego who thinks he is bigger than the team, no thanks on that.

A lot of these kids put the cart before the horse with all of this "brand" talk.  Prove yourself as a lottery pick and that brand will practically build itself.

I remember when players would pick a team because it gave them the best chance to play for a championship (and occasionally some cash too *wink wink*).  Now they want to play for a shitty team because nobody will give a fuck about anyone else on the team, and there will be nobody else there to steal the spotlight?  Pathetic.

Be the best player you can be, hire good people and get the best possible endorsement contracts.  This kid's dad has no idea what he is doing.  He'll get chewed up and spit out like Lavar Ball, or else create a totally irrelevant brand like Rashan Gary.  Let the pros do their thing and handle the business side.  You focus on the game.

Good luck getting triple teamed at ASU

I don't blame Christopher one bit for any of this.  It makes perfect sense.  But I hope we're mostly done recruiting one-and-dones.  It's usually not worth it.  Somebody ought to make a post about that.

if in fact the upcoming season is played, i wouldn't be surprised if this kid plays just a handful of games, then bails.  similar to the KY kid this past year. i think that will become a trend until one and done is finally eliminated.

So he’s not the type of kid that we want because college is a vehicle for building his brand. But, we celebrated Rashan’s decision to come here because it would help him develop his brand?

Build his brand my ass!  He simply wants to be the star and really doesn't care about the team.  Who the fuck does he think he is?  Even Michael Jordan, probably the GOAT, had to pay his dues before going to the NBA, and I know things have changed since then, but there are only a few players coming out of high school each decade that make the jump from high school or one-and-done status to NBA superstar.  This assclown is talking about being a first-round draft pick and starting up another crappy apparel brand that we don't need or want.  He is a showboat and is going to get schooled in the NBA unless he gets his head on right.  P.S. - He just burned a former NBA all-star and well-respected coach...not exactly sending a great message to his future employers in the NBA.

My hot take is JH is a high character guy with more connections than Hurley and deeply respected in the NBA. I'll be interested in seeing how JC is received by organizations, staffs & veterans if he indeed comes out after 1 year.

Honest question, since I don't watch highlight videos until they sign;

Is he all that his parents think he will be?

Seems like a big assumption unless he has been cleaning up against older players for years.
