OT: Where are you from?

interesting question. in the gang culture it is considered a challenge to someone else to ask that question. unlike the interesting and humorous meaning here, in the gang culture that question is really asking 'what gang are you from' and the only reason one gangster asks another gangster that question is that he knows you aren't from his gang and trouble is brewing.
the second part of that same theme is this: it will be the last words the challenged gangster ever hears. there is no right answer to that question, not even the 'i'm not from any gang' answer. its a bit like asking a woman if she's pregnant, its never the right question. so in the gangster world shooting will be happening in T minus, 3,2,1, POW, POW, POW! seconds.
so when you ask someone 'where are you from', its time for a murder. i can't tell you how many cases i handled back in the day that started with that exact question, and how many dead bodies resulted from it.

So not kidding, and naive to gang culture specifically....so did the term "Where you stay?" derive from the very fact that to ask "where are you from" could get you killed?

where you stay is newer i guess, but like most things, the context is key. sometimes it could be just a benign question about where they live, 'where your crib at?' kind of a question.
and when i say a challenge, the actual language is 'hitting up'. so if i 'hit [you] up', that means i challenged you and one of us probably got shot and/or hurt.

Hoping to not move again for a few years. Such is the life of a journalist spouse.
