Gene Smith vs Warde on bitching when you get screwed by refs
As many of you no doubt recall, after the refs took the 2016 OSU game from us, Warde was silent and many here have still not forgiven him for that.
Crooked OSU AD Gene Smith is going off about the officiating last night.
Does this change how you view Warde’s lack of response in 2016 or not?

but if that guy gets pushed backwards those 3 steps and never moves forward, then he is ruled down. A ball carrier does not need to be tackled to the ground to be ruled down. He only needs to be stopped.
December 29th, 2019 at 12:06 PM ^
He came back up-field to catch the ball. His own momentum pushed him backwards, not the defender. There's never a down-by-forward-progress call in that situation, or a contested hitch route would never allow YAC.
December 29th, 2019 at 12:34 PM ^
False. As long as the DB is in contact with him, the ball is down where he caught it and not where his backwards momentum stopped
December 29th, 2019 at 2:02 PM ^
What.
Guys go backwards all the time with minimal contact and no forward progress call. It's when his progress is stopped by the opposite team. Just putting your hands on a guy is meaningless. Find a different hole, cut back across the field. Probably happens five times a game.
December 29th, 2019 at 3:27 PM ^
Dude, have you ever watched a football game? Seriously. You have no idea how this works. For starters, it is tackle football not touch.
Here is how it works: when a receiver is coming back to catch a ball, and a defender is in contact, the ref has discretion - which is not reviewable - to decide when forward progress is stopped. So if the defender is just touching him with a finger, the ref will rule not down, and the receiver can spin and go upfield. But if the defender has control and is driving the receiver back, then the ref will rule forward progress, and spot the ball where the catch was made.
The key is that forward progress is not reviewable. And it was not called on the field
Really, I promise you that it is tackle football, not touch.

There will never be a national ‘if I could be like gene’ campaign
December 29th, 2019 at 10:05 AM ^
Gene Smith - not the human standard of character that Warde is shooting for...
December 29th, 2019 at 10:09 AM ^
Agree 100%, but you can fight for your guys without being a complete tool of a human being.
December 29th, 2019 at 1:01 PM ^
Gen Smith is an idiot plain and simple
December 29th, 2019 at 10:05 AM ^
Well, the entire state of Ohio does expect unconditional dick riding.
December 29th, 2019 at 10:08 AM ^
Endless whining and crying changed game results when? Sometimes endless whining and crying gets a baby's diaper changed, nothing more.
Warde's stoicism beats big, fat whining baby G Sm any and every day.
December 29th, 2019 at 10:13 AM ^
It works in basketball.

Whizzo ???
December 29th, 2019 at 10:18 AM ^
Stoicism? There's no stoicism in apologizing for Harbaugh. Stoicism would have been keeping his mouth shut and not embarrassing our coach!
Throughout Harbaugh's tenure here, I've come to realize that, while he hasn't been perfect, he's our man and a great deal of our problems here are up higher than him.
December 29th, 2019 at 11:57 AM ^
a lot of post game whining and cheerleading got nebraska a share of an undeserving national title back in 97.
December 29th, 2019 at 10:08 AM ^
Michigan has chosen to "take the high ground" in every circumstance. Even over something as innocuous as calling out bad officiating. This is what we get for being arrogant, I guess. The university will never change. Even if the AD came around, Schlissel would never allow it.
December 29th, 2019 at 10:12 AM ^
You have a point.
Warde works for Schlissel.
At Online State it’s the other way around.
December 29th, 2019 at 10:30 AM ^
THE Online State University.
December 29th, 2019 at 10:12 AM ^
Neither type of response has any impact, so it's really just a matter of your preferred way to live.
December 29th, 2019 at 10:22 AM ^
This is false, it can often lead to rule changes or noticeable officiating differences later in the year.
December 29th, 2019 at 10:27 AM ^
Can you cite any recent example?
I'll admit, I won't be surprised if they revise targeting rules for next year so that there are variances in punishment, but I can't think of anything bin recent college football history where an AD's response provoked a rule change (at least that wasn't player safety related).
December 29th, 2019 at 10:44 AM ^
Not college but Louisiana’s whining after a bad call led to a very stupid and inconsistently applied pass interference rule in the NFL
December 29th, 2019 at 10:55 AM ^
It wasn’t because the saints bitched, it’s because the entire world saw a horrendously missed call. Nothing in last nights game or 2016 Michigan osu is going to have everyone agree so it’s just useless complaining
December 29th, 2019 at 12:07 PM ^
I guess, but even a rule change doesn’t really help unless the same play happens to you again in the future
December 29th, 2019 at 10:16 AM ^
Fine his ass, suck it up Gene
December 29th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
Consistency would call for the Big Ten admin to fine Smith just as they did Harbaugh.
Experience shows that Delaney and company won't do a thing against OSU.
December 29th, 2019 at 10:31 AM ^
THEosu tears taste glorious.
December 29th, 2019 at 10:35 AM ^
I am wondering if I might be a bad person. I find myself wanting the questionable calls to have been incorrect, as this would make the loss even more painful for them.
Seeing sad Buckeyes crying and weeping gives me butterflies in my tummy, like the first time I liked a girl
December 29th, 2019 at 10:39 AM ^
Fuck Ohio State
December 29th, 2019 at 10:53 AM ^
I didn’t care then and I don’t care now. Gene smith can bitch all he wants but their season is still over and it will do nothing to change the future. Refs are bad because they are human not because of some grand conspiracy that you can uncover and end by complaining
December 29th, 2019 at 10:56 AM ^
He’s got a point with the fumble overrule. But the targeting call was spot on.
While I like the defense of his team, I don’t think he has nearly the ground Warde had in 2016. But Warde was silent.
December 29th, 2019 at 11:02 AM ^
Couldn't have happened to a better team! After the 2016 game and subsequent 17/18 games where they refused to call meaningful penalties against that effing team.. it couldn't have been a better screw job on the national stage! LMFAO!
December 29th, 2019 at 11:04 AM ^
Gene Smith deserves it! That program deserves the screw job they got and more, many more! They still have a trophy and win to ship back to Miami! They have a win, bigten east division and title to return to Michigan from the 2016 game and subsequent playoff appearance.. so many and what a screw job on ohio
December 29th, 2019 at 2:26 PM ^
Good point.
Not enough remember the time OSU was the beneficiary of one of the worst calls ever.

They screwed themselves. The targeting and roughing the punter penalties were absolutely correct and led to points. Plus there were the red zone fuck ups. If they had played an otherwise perfect game, I could understand some crying. They are the better team and lost to shooting themselves in the face over and over so fuck ‘em.
December 29th, 2019 at 12:58 PM ^
This. That roughing the punter was the game changer. There was also Day not going for two on that last t.d. and then not going for it on 4th late and giving Clemson the ball back with 2 minutes left. Day's players lost their heads then he turtled up at the worse possible times..
Fuck Ohio.

Maybe now the John O'Neill School for Online Referee diplomas will be obliged to offer a mandatory course on "Applied Karma and Discreet Butt Taping for Beginners" ;o)
December 29th, 2019 at 11:11 AM ^
I thought Warde didn’t do enough. He should have made public statements damning the league. What would Canham or Bo have done in their AD capacities? It was a huge wasted opportunity to leverage the league into changing how it officiates.
December 29th, 2019 at 11:14 AM ^
I called the Fields' osu-season-ending INT in the end zone prior to the play ...and that'll give Fields, osu and the cooler-pooper fan base something to stew on for the next 8 months.
A lot of shoulda-woulda-coulda's in that game for osu; at a minimum they should have went into halftime with at least a 24-0 lead - they totally dominated Clemson in the 1st half, obviously except in the red-zone.
Lastly, can we all agree that the Herbstreit - Fowler broadcasting team is one of the primary reasons for the 'mute' button on the remote?
December 29th, 2019 at 11:20 AM ^
IIRC the shitholes down south lost by 6. That touchdown vs. a FG is only a difference of 4 points. They still lose and they still can go fuck themselves.
December 29th, 2019 at 11:26 AM ^
Who cares. Lets just focus on beating OSU so we don't have to talk about them in the playoffs.
December 29th, 2019 at 11:54 AM ^
Thanks. It helps if fans are totally focused today on beating Ohio State
December 29th, 2019 at 11:32 AM ^
The refs didn’t run the wrong route at the end, just like the refs didn’t fail tackle Curtis Samuel
December 29th, 2019 at 11:37 AM ^
yeah it's not the refs fault we couldn't fight through the egregious holding and blocks in the back on that play
Are you even a Michigan fan?
