OT: Vasectomy advice

Submitted by Bo Schemheckler on August 1st, 2019 at 9:48 PM

Tomorrow, after 3 kids, I will be retiring the ol'  huevos. It's been a good run but 3 kids under 4 is enough and it was time for some heavy risk reduction. Who has been snipped and do you have any advice for the next few days that I should know about?

My boys kept retreating upwards when I saw the needle for the local anesthetic.  The urologist said he couldn’t do it that way so we rescheduled for the next week.  Did it under general anesthesia-best move ever.  No fuss , no muss, no psychological trauma.

Make friends with the jolly green giant.  Over 30% of frozen veggies are purchased on Friday and disposed of over the weekend.  Kinda creepy when he smiles on the package.

I did freak out a bit when you smell the cauterization coming from that area of your body.

All good though

I got mine this past 28th of June. Everyone heals differently. Some people are fine the following week - I was not. It took me about three weeks to fully heal. Days 1-3 will be the worst. Just don’t do anything strenuous. No kids jumping on you. Pets, too. You simply need to relax. Also be careful when you whip your dick out to piss. Do it slowly and be gentle. And don’t forget to drink beer. Just because it tastes good.

It's not as bad as it seems.  And you will forever use a razor and cream to shave your junk because it feels so awesome.

Not that I did it, but do not take the same approach to your armpits.  The razor burn was unbearable.  Ok I did do it.

I went under for the procedure, and I had 0 pain for the first 24 hours. I felt untouchable the next day, so I made the stupid mistake of mowing my lawn, going for a couple-mile walk, and playing with my kids. A couple days later, I developed some pretty bad clots that swelled and gave me 8/10 pain for a few weeks. I was fine w/ 3/10 pain at work, but after walking all day at work, 6-10pm was a bi-otch! 3 months later w/ no cardio workouts, and I finally felt ? again.

snipped in '03.  frozen peas are your best friend.

the worst part will be during the healing process..... at some point you'll have an itch and go for the old "pinch and roll" scratch....and you'll just about shit yourself.

the sex after the snip is worth every ounce of pain.

Been there and back again. The vasectomy was a nothing burger. The reversal was orders of magnitude worse. Take it easy in the days after, ice if you need it. Experiences seem to vary wildly which I mostly chalk up to the skill of the surgeon, and they lay of the land once they open you up.

Insane that many doctors require a wife/significant other’s signature to do this procedure. Flip the script and CNN may actually implode lol.

The procedure itself is the worst part, unless you have a rare reaction/infection.  It’s not a sharp pain as much as is it the odd pressure feeling ... did not like the tugging on the vas deferens.  But it was a 10 min procedure.

One of the best decisions I have ever made. 2 kids, then DONE. No more worries for me.

echoing everyone:

1. Do the 3 drops to make sure you’re sterile. Don’t skip this. Seriously.

2. have lots of ice on hand. Or frozen peas. Never thought putting ice on the boys would feel so good.

3. Rent some good movies and enjoy some rest.

My sister got hers tied off after our third when she had a c section.  Good decision for us and minimized the collective risk since she was already being cut on.

Did this a quarter century ago.  Asked my wife what she wanted for Christmas, and she said she wanted me to have a vasectomy as she was tired of being the one responsible for contraception. Oh, and she also wanted for us to get a dog.  It took me about nine months to get around to the first one: did it on a Friday evening, just the doc and me in his office, listening to the local high school football game on the radio while he did his job. I went to work the next morning, but moved a little slower all weekend. Within just a couple days all was well. The sex for the past 25 years has been worth all that little pain.

She had to wait a few more months for the dog.

Just ice (bag of frozen peas) for two days and don't go and play basketball because you feel fine!  And make sure the kids don't jump on your lap when you're sitting down.  Otherwise, you'll be fine after a couple of days.  Good luck!

Definitely frozen peas over bags of bulky, melty ice.

Definitely lay low for the weekend. You will get some sympathy from the wife who will still laugh about the peas, but will be thankful she isn't the one doing the recovering.

Definitely do the check in to make sure you're shooting blanks. Most definitely.

True worry free sex is the best sex. Look forward to it.

Had it done this past April after our second and my wife and I knew we were done. I honestly didn’t experience any extreme soreness the following days until I thought I was over the hump and overdid it. Definitely take it easy for a few days to make sure you’re really healed.

I found the anticipation much worse than the actual procedure and recovery.

Bags of frozen vegetables are easier to use than ice.  Trust me. They are malable and better temp.

I did the same thing after my third and it was a very good decision.  You must be 100% sure you are done and then you will be cool with the decision.  The surgery is pretty simple and just chill for a couple days utilizing that frozen bag of peas.

My advice would be don’t stress out about it, it’s over really quick.  Little soreness after so try to clear your schedule for a few days afterwards to recover.

I will also note that the white stuff in your ejaculate is not sperm. Sperm is actually microscopic. You can't see sperm with the naked eye. The white stuff is something that comes from the prostate and it will always be there even after the vasectomy.

Make sure you're really sure.  I had a reversal and it's super expensive, the insurance company doesn't pay for it, and the recovery from that is A LOT LONGER AND MORE PAINFUL than the original procedure.  I had mine done during March Madness so I would have a good reason to lay on the couch watching TV for a few days.  A couple of bags of frozen vegetables like corn or peas will help keep your incisions from screaming at you.  Seriously, these puppies will be your best friends!

Wow, this sounds like a much different "cutting the cord" discussion than we had a few days ago. Oh well, I'd still recommend streaming with YouTube TV afterwards.

I was snipped about ten years ago after two kids, and I recommend having a decent binge watching lineup and some ibuprofen, especially in the first 24 hours when you'll definitely not be moving around much. Otherwise, just follow your urologist's directions, don't push yourself back into full activity (it will be a couple weeks before you're 100% down there) and you'll be fine, I would say.

After four kids (the last two are 14 months apart) I did mine on December 30th two years ago. Absolutely no pain, watched bowl games all weekend and the wife even "made" me have sex with her the next day. I feel bad for the ones with the horror stories.

Talk about bball with your doc during the procedure. Don't take any Advil and ride a horse 13 miles in the mountain two days after. That's how I did it when I got a NSV about 10 years ago.

It was nothing. I wish I had four balls and could do it again.

I had mine done on September 3rd, 2015.  It's a day I will always remember for more than one reason as it was also Harbaughs first game back at UM.  Didn't end the way we all wanted it to, but the surgery was a success and I was feeling no pain by kick off.  Scheduled it that way and took Friday off as well so I would have a good 3-4 days to heal up with Labor Day on the following Monday.  Was back to work on Tuesday with no issues.  The jock and plenty of ice also seemed to help.

Good luck!!

Good luck.  We've decided to stop having kids and are using other methods that are less invasive, but I can see this being an option that gives you piece of mind and doesn't require your significant other to undergo a procedure or deal with hormone-affecting medications or devices.
