OT: 2020 Corvette is a thing of beauty
So GM unveiled the 2020 Corvette Stingray late last night, an all-new mid-engine performance machine. Looks aggressive and mean from a profile perspective and tons of customization options. They didn't announce much on pricing, other than it would start at less that $60,000.
If I nitpicked, it would be that the taillights look like they are copied/pasted from the Camaro, and the interior row of climate buttons is a little funky looking.
All in all, should be a great and exciting new flagship for the Chevrolet brand.
Yeah I would say that qualifies as nit picking.
I kind of agree, though. The lights are similar to those on the Camaro, and the back end is just a bit busy/overwrought, in general - at least based on that one picture.
I'm sure I'll change my mind when I see it in person. On balance, though, it looks fantastic - like a genuine exotic supercar.
I shake my head at the so-called "purists" who want nothing to do with a mid-engine Vette. They've only been talking about it for decades. And the claims that it's too European-looking? The original Corvette was a direct reaction to the popularity of European sports cars following WWII. Chevy wanted in on the action and developed the Corvette.
And I love driving stick as much as the next guy, but it doesn't sell and the autos are just better in terms of performance (and fuel economy!) these days.
EDIT: One comment about that interior view that is related to the mid-rear engine placement - I love that you can actually see the road in front of you. This is the gripe I have about the Mustang. The hood is just so large, it really does force a longer viewing angle, if you know what I mean (I'm making up words here, but I think you get the picture). I would appreciate being able to see more of the road in front of me.
EDIT2: Apparently, they also revealed the 'Vette 'vert.
Also, C8 Corvette Configurator
I'd wait to see it up close and personal before passing judgement on those tail lights. Having owned a bunch of vettes, I thought the round lights in their various iterations became boring.
I am also looking forward to testing this car to see how its DCT transmission works. I've driven a couple of performance cars with paddle shifters and once you get used to them, at least in my case, it was easy to say goodbye to a manual transmission, something I never thought I would do.
This car, from what GM has published, has superb performance in its base model, probably due to the pairing of a pretty cool small block V8 with a modern transmission and very nice balance. A light car, I believe this is something like 3350 pounds, also helps immensely. I can only imagine what the Z06 or ZR1 or whatever they name the more performance oriented versions that will be coming down the pike will do from a performance perspective.
Cant wait to see how overpriced it is.
Starts under $60K
Serious question: Why do you think that it will be overpriced?
'vettes have been a great value on price to performance for awhile now. Dude doesn't know what he is talking about.
Agree 100%, which is why I was surprised by his comment.
If you were to slap a Ferrari logo on that car and just upgrade the finishes a bit, you could charge 4 times as much without having to touch the mechanical features, at all.
Seems like a big, big leap. Especially with a starting price under $60K. Now will there be any base base models at $59,999.99 on dealer lots? Maybe. Maybe not. But 0-60 in 3 seconds, 490HP from a naturally aspirated V8, that's no joke. For this price the Toyota Supra looks like a joke, and the Boxster/Cayman are squared up.
My nitpick would be that it's DCT only (#SaveTheManuals) but depending on what the stick shift take rate was on the C7, I could see why they didn't spend the development dollars.
A manual transmission, I'm sorry to say, cannot come close to performing as well as a DCT. DCT's shift lots faster, both up and down, and you never miss a shift. They also make traffic a joy. I know of very few people who have driven DCT's that afterwards wanted to go back to a manual transmission.
Modern automatic transmissions have helped change performance metrics due to the number of gears and ways to optimize power and gearing.
Wow. Looks like a genuine exotic.
Dealers will be selling this thing at 5-10k+ over sticker when they come out
Minimum, considering they were selling Civic Type R's for that much over sticker.
type r is a great car. But $40k great for a civic? I wouldn’t if it was my money.
Cars are expensive now. A Golf R is over $40,000 and it isn't near the Type R's level.
ehh there's a decent selection of quality cars starting at $30,000 or less. maybe not ones that you're super excited about but if getting a decently priced car is your main selling point it's not too bad
Golf R > Civic Type R in almost every way
Every single direct comparison disagrees with you, but I'm sure your particular needs match everyone else's.
Not true:
Honestly, it depends on what it important to you. If you take it to the track and like the styling (I personally think it is awful), they the Civic Type R is for you. If you want a faster 0-60, better gas mileage, all wheel drive, and subtle styling, then the Golf R is your pick. Overall, you can't go wrong with either - they are both great cars for the $.
depending on production, my guess is that the enthusiasts will be willing to pony up for the mark up but once that dies down, dealers will be left with inventory that will be subject to nice negotiation price breaks.
That's true of most products that have a built-in demand. When they first come out, there is a frenzy and people will pay over sticker price. Once that initial demand is satisfied, the price drops to what it was intended to be all along.
Not if you go to a reputable dealer. Check out Chevy Dude online. His dealer (Indianapolis) is not charging over sticker, and you can reserve with $1000 refundable deposit.
what’s with the button ribbon down the left side of the passenger seat? Looks like an ergonomic nightmare for the driver to access.
It also makes you wonder what the view of anything inside the car is for the passenger. Definitely driver-oriented, lol...
Too many buttons in a car interior is a pet peeve of mine. Putting them all in a ribbon is an interesting idea but it would be better to eliminate the need for them IMO.
It looks nice but a Corvette without a manual available is kinda sad. I believe the previous gen ZR1 was the most powerful car you could buy with a manual transmission.
Every single car I have owned since 1982 has had manual transmission, but I finally had to give it up a couple of years ago because automatics had finally reached the point where they accelerated faster and achieved better gas mileage. Manual transmission on BMW went from rare to almost impossible without special order, and even then limited to certain models.
Automatics nowadays are better in every objective way. But the things I love about a manual transmission are completely subjective.
I will never feel the same "man melds with machine" feeling I get as when I'm putting that clutch pedal down and throwing a shifter knob around as I hunt for the apex on a twisty mountain road.
That being said, I do this maybe 1% of the time I'm driving, so perhaps I shouldn't weight it so heavily when picking a car :D
69 GTO Judge "carousel red" for the show car color. Nice homage to brands lost GM designers.
Like a bizarro lovechild mix of Camaro+Ford GT+Late Ferrari. Ridiculous. Also, awesome.
I hate GM's touch screens. They look really childish/cheap imo. It's not even properly integrated into the interior. It's probably nice that it's angled toward the driver, but it just throws the whole thing off.
I've never been a fan of Corvettes and their body style. I have to admit this one is sharp as hell though.
That is stunning. Incredible to keep that under $60k
Glad they finally rolled a mid-engine ‘vette out. They’ve been talking about this for years!
Now let’s see if they can get that bitch around the Nürburgring ring faster than it’s little brother...the Camaro ZL1 1LE. This would be no small feat as that camaro is as dialed in a track car as GM has ever rolled out.
Im guessing the Corvette guys want their title back!
if you’re into cars there is a YouTube video out about the ZL1 1LE, it’s design, and they show the whole race around Nürburgring from inside the car.....it’s pretty badass.
Great job GM rolling out an American muscle machine that is whoopin’ a lot of the super car asses...all at 1/4 of the price.
Maybe it's just the orange but the design cues look at lot like a McLaren with sharper elbows
Yeh, good call, looks like what the Chevy designers were thinking about.... but the 'vette will easily cost half of that car.
and that McLaren looks like the new Audi A8 Spyder ...
That's why so many car these days look similar as they were designed around drag co-efficient for fuel economy. Hopefully the engineers figured out how to insulate the engine noise that ALL rear cars, regardless their sticker price seem to have.
That front end reminds me of Master Control
Don't like the back end or red. Thumbs up for the rest of it.
i've never been a huge fan of corvettes but I even like the look of this one now. That being said I would never buy and or drive a sports car like this if it was not a full manual transmission. I get why they are cutting production on it, but call me nostalgic, stubborn or whatever.
Nice car. Looks almost as nice as my Chevy Cruze. The Cruze has manual transmission so it probably feels a little more sporty.
Looks really complicated.
Shiny though. Curvy too.
Does it come in a gas mileage friendly family mid-size SUV with blind-spot assist and rear camera?
Yes, it comes in an Equinox.
It won’t be as fun when it’s a self driving car.
looks like a Chinese knock-off of a high-end European sports car and nothing like a Corvette any longer. Meh
Perfect call on this.
Nothing about it makes me even think "Corvette." Good for them though, or something. I saw a late 70's model on the street last week. Beauty. This is... whatever. meh.
The lost me when they lost the third pedal.
0-60 sub 3 is impressive. No AWD though.
Sub $60k is also impressive.
Would look decidedly better if they shrunk the rear trunk; it's a bit overlarge in the posterior for my eye.
I like big trunks and I cannot lie.
Gotta sate the retirees who need to fit their golf clubs...
