YouTube TV price to increase

Submitted by teldar on April 10th, 2019 at 7:41 PM

So YouTube TV is going to add the discovery channel and HGTV and increase my price $15/mo. Supposedly there were never going to be price increases.

Not so much, now.

So I've just fallen out of love with YouTube. Anyone got a compelling reason to switch to Hulu TV or another alternative?

I just can’t get myself to do the streaming thing. I can’t!

I did call directv a couple weeks ago and I’m now paying 23/mo out the door with DVR for the next year.  I have been with them for 10 years with no complaints.

Obviously streaming service prices will continue to go up as long as demand increases.

i got that deal last year and was thinking at that price i might keep the TV connected for 12 months, the first time in over a decade.   and then they....changed the price on me 5 months into it.  no amount of 'but we have an agreement' would dissuade them.  so i unplugged again.  will have to get something going for football season in 5 months.  not worried about it now though.

I use Hulu Live TV and I'm very happy with it. It's now $10 cheaper per month than YouTube TV at $40/month as well.

I like it because I get any sports channel I could ask for so I'm not missing any games and the channel selection is on par with YouTube TV. I haven't come across a channel I wish I had, but didn't.

It's also really nice that the Hulu Live comes with an increased selection on their shows and movies with limited commercials as well. Just a no-brainer.

I had Sling for a while, but the channel selection and overall value was lacking.

Even though Hulu has increase, it is still about $50.00 per month cheaper than the only cable available in my town. As long as they keep the B1G network, I'll keep them. Otherwise, I'll change!  3 years ago I was thinking of sling but they did not have the B1G network, so I went with Hulu.

I pay $15 a month and get like 1000 channels, every local network, all premium channels & every live PPV event. And it’s legal (no I’m not selling it). There are alternatives out there

I am actually pretty happy about this news.

1. Discovery is one of my favorite channels. It was the one negative that I had about choosing YouTube TV a few months ago. I even looked into paying $20/month for an app that would let me watch discovery. So $10 more is a great thing for me. Coincidentally I watch Discovery at my hotel last night and was trying to decide if I would buck up the $20 for the app

2. It's $15 more if you watch through an Apple device and $10 for the rest of us.

3. I'm pretty surprised that they decided to charge that much more for a few more channels. Especially considering there are several similar options out there. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Maybe it's location specific for me, but I've found just bundling cable+internet with my local provider is sadly more cost effective than internet through them and then some streaming service

I'd already canceled YTTV, but now I'm glad I did. Back to PSVue.

To me, the real savings for cord-cutting are turning off the service when you don't need it. I don't follow baseball, so I have 4 months out of the year where I just don't need TV. 8 months of YTTV/Hulu/Vue ends up being cheaper than 12 months of Comcast/WOW/DirecTV.

I have Xfinity TV Internet and Netflix bundle for $109 includes DVR and BTN. I Also use Roku sticks with streaming app for other rooms and I also get hulu free with Sprint

Tried YouTube TV liked it but couldn't past up that Bundle. For me you I have to look at the cost of internet and TV combined. It was way cheaper to bundle with xfinty then pay to separate entities and get slower internet.

I just saw my email as well, that stinks. I've liked having YouTube TV and was excited when it became available in my area. I've had Sling and PSvue so I may give Hulu a try.

I've been a big proponent of YTTV but won't be anymore.  The unlimited DVR is great, I'm a big fan of being able to watch anywhere and the quality has been very good.  The thing is I signed up because of the lean channel list and lower price.  I don't watch any of the channels that were just added (or 80% of the channels that are already there).  So I get zero benefit from the extra $15/mo cost.  It's now exactly the same value proposition as cable TV so no thanks.

I'll be canceling after the Masters.

I've had Hulu, PSVue, and now have YoutubeTV. When I visited my family a few weeks ago, my sister had service with DirectTVNow. Here are my takeaways.

YoutubeTV has 1080@60fps for all live sports channels, even locals. This was not the case with PSVue, who I had for over a year until YTTV became nationally available.

DirectTVNow seemed okay, but the biggest flaw for me was that the stream stopped anytime you opened a menu. If you decided to back out and continue watching what you were previously, the stream would have to reload.

YTTV has by far the nicest UI on AndroidTV. DirectTVNow seemed clumsy and confusing to navigate. PSVue was fine here, but looked like it came from a Window98 graphics suite. The thumbnail preview while forwarding/rewinding in YTTV is very handy.

The great thing about streaming is now that there are no college sports to watch until football season, I can put my subscription on hold until September and save $200.

We have tons of content but I'd say that there are only a few really interesting channels. I even download the most interesting stuff using 123convert.to to keep it on my PC. But I wish we had more interesting stuff to watch. Because sometimes I check the feed and there's nothing interesting at all.

I really appreciate what google does to youtube, the platform becomes much better for users. Of course it's getting harder for new creators to become popular but you just should know how to get subscribers easily and you are good to go. You won't have to invest a ton of money, making your channel popular is pretty affordable at this point.
