Best class in the B1G at the moment by many measureables

Submitted by reddogrjw on December 19th, 2018 at 1:51 PM

yes, we are ranked higher in the 247 composite even after Zach's commitment to OSU, but it is not just because of our class size

Michigan's current average in the 247 composite = .9037

Top 15 recruits average .9289, OSU's 15 man class averages .9257

Top 18 recruits average .9224, PSU's 18 man class averages .9212

so basically we have the best class currently, plus took additional lottery tickets with some 3-stars that will work themselves out one way or another

We got Dax Hill for some very unique reasons.  He is a very strong student, and the rare 5 star for which Michigan's unique combo of academics, 40 year lifetime decision thing, and strong football program just happened to mesh.  Even then it was down to the wire.

Not many 5 star guys are like Dax Hill.  Not many are going to look at the entire package, but would care only about the football part.

So until M gets to the playoffs, 5 stars will be sort rare scenarios--the rare guy like Hill that actually does care about things a school has to offer beyond football, 5 stars guys from Michigan, etc.

Now if M does make the playoff, that will be a game changer for recruiting.

Michigan pulled in a really great class, not just in the number of 4/5 star guys plus promising 3 stars, but also spread very well across position groups.

But it is not over.  Likely that OSU and/or PSU will try to add some guys that have not yet signed (unsigned verbal commits at other schools) before February--some 3 star lottery tickets of their own.

Could even be that Michigan tries to add an unsigned DE to the class before February.

To beat OSU it starts with coaching then players.  Looks like stars (pun intended) are starting to line up. Can't stress enough what a difference Dax HIll made.  Not just just in keeping a recruiting score, but from a psychological sense and also impact on field.  I know, I know, talking about beating OSU is one thing, doing it is another. My wife and I will be in Vegas in April.  I will bet every possible advance proxy bet on Michigan.  EVERYONE!  MSU, OSU and ND will lose at Big House.

Bama's class is once again disgusting.

2 - 5*
22 - 4*
1 - 3* (#1 ranked Kicker)

Still yet to sign are 1 more 5* and 3 more 4*'s.

No other schools have a chance with this going on.

Do you guys think that Cornelius Johnson is a guy that could see the field as soon as next year? He looks fast and seems to have great hands.

Michigan does have an embarrassment of riches at the WR position with Bell and Martin filling in that Perry role next year.

I think this is where the new redshirt rule really helps these young guys.

I got into a similar argument with a FSU fan a couple years ago when what's his face (old Minnesota coach before Kill) was their TE coach and Tweeted some shit after the bowl game asking why recruits would go to Michigan when FSU is better/recruits better.

Same thing that year. The argument was Michigan's class is only higher because of the numbers, but Michigan's top 18 guys were higher ranked/had a higher average than FSU's class of 18 guys (at the time).

If the tops of the classes are similar, then having an extra 5 or 6 "fliers" is just gravy. One of them turns into Ryan Glasgow and it's a massive win.

I just read on RCMB that Daxton flipped from Alabama to UM only because Alabama flipped a different safety from OSU and he didn't want to be the third safety for them. First of all, Daxton is the number one rated safety in the 2019 class, so that would automatically put him ahead of the other two. Second of all, he was committed to M for a while, flipped to Alabama for like 17 minutes, and then flipped back to M. MSU fans are so god damn clueless.

Looks like we got most of our targets, even though Zack did  not jump on board. May be a few more surprises by signing day but we should have another top 10 class up with or above OSU.

ESPN has Michigan at the #4 class after the early signing frenzy today. So does that shut up the SlantedAzure blobbity blah? Doubt it.

We can be assured that some of this class will eventually transfer, some will enter the NFL early, and some will retire due to injury. One of them will eventually transfer to a Michigan Directional, but not the one in East Lansing.

But this class will fortify the depth for next year, and give us a few potential starters. Dax and Charbonnet are early bets, of course.

Which player will surprise us and get early time--a Ronnie Bell type surprise?

The only potential difference is the number of transfers we experienced.  Those other two teams may have talent still remaining from their former 3 classes without as much attrition.  So, it's hard to compare class to class by just our top 15.  The better team comparison will be the team talent rankings once next season begins.  I'm sure teams like Bama, OSU, Georgia, & Clemson will be at the top of those lists.  But, with guys from the '16 and '17 class  like Solomon, Singleton, Hudson, Irving-Bey, Malone-Hatcher, Hall, Walker, Crawford, etc. moving on as highly ranked guys, that will hurt our overall score.
