OT: Illitchs exploring creation of Regional Sports Network

Future proofing against a sale of FS Detroit. Bring back PASS!
October 25th, 2018 at 10:02 AM ^
I initially read "Illitchs" as "Illinois" and my first thought was, "Who the hell cares about Illinois sports enough to dedicate an entire channel to it?!"
October 25th, 2018 at 10:06 AM ^
Same here, I was thinking it was about the most random school possible to lead this.

Bring back PASS sports!

PASS basically became Fox Sports Detroit. Fox bought PASS, but also launched FSD at about the same time, giving them two regional networks in Detroit. They quickly learned that was dumb, and then just moved all of the contracts, personal, etc from PASS to FSD and shut down PASS.
RIP.

Are they interested in taking Maryland and Rutgers?
October 25th, 2018 at 10:12 AM ^
No. Maryland and Rutger's parents won't even acknowledge them in public.
October 25th, 2018 at 3:41 PM ^
That's bringing up some uncomfortable memories
October 25th, 2018 at 10:10 AM ^
Sounds like a great idea in 2005.
October 25th, 2018 at 10:12 AM ^
If they don't call it PASS, I'll pass.
October 25th, 2018 at 10:12 AM ^
As long as the network has good streaming options, this is fine. But we're finally reaching the point where all the major networks have functional streaming platforms, so I'm a little wary of moving sports off those.
October 25th, 2018 at 10:14 AM ^
Fox's is definitely the worst as of now, so I'd be fine with it.
October 25th, 2018 at 11:01 AM ^
disagree - CBS is by far the worst. CBS is the only one you can't use to stream when you have a cable subscription; you have to buy it separately.
October 25th, 2018 at 11:31 AM ^
I can stream on CBS with Xfinity.
October 25th, 2018 at 10:13 AM ^
How about ON TV? Remember that oldie but goodie?
October 25th, 2018 at 10:49 AM ^
Ah, you beat me to it--ON subscription TV. Back before PASS, ON was an over-the-air paid station.
October 25th, 2018 at 10:17 AM ^
They should prolly have some teams worth putting on TV everyone of them sucks.

Go to 3:33 in to see the old PASS intro from the 1985 Maryland game...

WH, just curious as to what your favorite intro or intros are from that video? I love that you put this together, and I'll usually end up watching it at least one or twice a year.
October 25th, 2018 at 11:36 AM ^
My favorites are the early 90's ABC theme and the 90's ESPN intro.
That ESPN theme in particular should have never changed, just like the CBS one that has stayed the same (for the SEC) for a couple decades now.
Once the 90's ended, the quality of intros started to go down. And they suck today. Especially the ESPN one that sounds like a boring ringtone. I can't believe they're still using it after 4 years.
October 25th, 2018 at 2:54 PM ^
I agree with you, the early 90s ABC and ESPN were excellent. Also good are the late 80s ABC intro, and I liked the 97-03? ABC intro music.
It's crazy that CBS has the same one from the late 80s/early 90s. Pre 2000 had the best ones BY FAR.

One other item, more of an observation. I had no idea that TBS used to have college football games on their network. It looked at though the 1986 M vs FSU game was on TBS. Very strange.

All the sound quality of a trumpet, recorded on a potato, played back thru a gameboy
October 25th, 2018 at 1:29 PM ^
... with a couple second clip of QB Jim Harbaugh.
Following the PASS intro, the next intro starts out @4:33 with Bo and his smiling face, with narration by the great Keith Jackson.
October 25th, 2018 at 10:34 AM ^
Hey I loved watching the Red Wings on PASS back in the day with my Dad. I'm sure he didn't like paying for each game.
October 25th, 2018 at 11:02 AM ^
That 1985 PASS music is great with the high-pitched woozy synthesizer, and the trumpet music mixed in there as well for good measure!

I’m fine with this as long as none of the suits from Fox migrate over. They are bad at their jobs which makes them perfect Fox employees.
October 25th, 2018 at 12:05 PM ^
I love how some 20 years after PASS went by the wayside after being bought out by Fox Sports, we are apparently getting PASS: The Next Generation, except this time, I assume I won't have to beg my parents to pick up the tab for it like I did back in the 1980s.
October 25th, 2018 at 12:21 PM ^
Who would pay to watch the Dead Wings?
October 25th, 2018 at 2:59 PM ^
Heading to the game tomorrow night in Detroit! After watching Rangers beat Blackhawks tonight in Chicago.
October 25th, 2018 at 1:19 PM ^
Bring back Rod Allen and...er, ...nevermind
October 25th, 2018 at 2:21 PM ^
This is never going to happen and is a negotiating ploy. The startup costs to run a network are high, and Detroit is not a big enough market to justify it.
October 25th, 2018 at 4:32 PM ^
There's been rumors of this for the past couple of years. The Wings office is filled with people with a successful background in this (Palace Sports and Entertainment) The most difficult thing is getting the access to cable. I can see FSD being sold to Olympia or whatever they want to go by, and moving forward from there.
October 25th, 2018 at 2:56 PM ^
The only thing I remember about PASS is harness racing.
There was nothing better than getting the Wings on CBC.
October 25th, 2018 at 4:04 PM ^
They had Tigers & Pistons & CCHA, as well as Wings. Also late night Aussie Rules Football.
