OT: Clowney sits. Spurrier calls him out.
Clowney told his coaches last minute that he was too sore to play. Spurrier's response - If Clowney "wants to play, we will welcome him to come play for the team if he wants," Spurrier said. "But he if doesn't want to play, he doesn't have to play. Simple as that."

Clowney is being a bad teammate, but calling your players out in public just never ends well.
October 6th, 2013 at 1:35 AM ^
I agree with you and have never been a fan of Spurrier but I think if he is saying what he is saying he is done dealing with a Diva. NFL GM's must be shaking their heads right now.

You don't call your players out in the media. It is embarrassing for the players, tears lockerooms apart, and creats negative publicity.

have you actually watched him play? He plays like the Vincent Smith hit is all he will ever need to do to be great because people loved that singular play. He is a beast, but he has regressed and no one can truthfully say otherwise.

Use the word projected for now, and check back five years after the draft to see who the best really was.

incessantly asked you about the player? And until now you have stood up for the player. And the player has continued to play only when he feels like it?
Also, I would assume there are already locker room problems. The team must be upset with Clowny's behavior. A for the coach to publically simply make a statement of truth, instead of cover it up after five weeks of football, must reassure guys who want to play and don't get the noteriety that Clowny gets. There are 7 other DEs on roster who have seen and heard all of this.
October 6th, 2013 at 9:57 AM ^
Clowney deserved to be called out. He clearly has regressed, is looking to remain healthy for the draft, and is not giving full effort for SC--precisely the definition of a bad teammate

Two total douchebags. One a millionaire. One about to become one. Don't care.
October 6th, 2013 at 10:14 AM ^
I agree, but I also figure Spurrier doesn't much care at this point. Clowney has been a bit of a disappointment so far this year, and Spurrier knows he is gonea fter this year while OBC will be sticking around. Might as well reestablish your position.

Spurrier is a douche

how?

Doesn't seem too cally-outy. But how sore does he think he's going to be in the NFL after only five games?

I find him humorous. During his time at Florida he would freely insult other SEC schools. Please feel free to google some great Spurrier quotes.
October 6th, 2013 at 9:15 AM ^
I think Spurrier's best all-time quote was "You can't spell Citrus without UT."
Sadly for UT, their program is now at a point where they would be ecstatic to go to what is now the Capital One Bowl this year.

How is Spurrier calling him out? He answered the question in a coach manner and was pretty un-douchey, as the kidz say, about it. I'd be pretty pissed about dealing with this kind of sh*t myself, as a coach, as I'm sure the South Carolina defense and overall team is I'd wager.

"If Clowney wants to play, we will welcome him to come play for the team if he wants," Spurrier said. "But he if doesn't want to play, he doesn't have to play. Simple as that."
Does that really have to be explained to you?
October 6th, 2013 at 2:08 AM ^
Yeah I guess I didn't really mean to ask "How is he calling him out" as yes he is, but more a question to the others above as to why they think he was doing it in a bad way. I think there's different ways to call out people/players. Essentially, I thought how Spurrier handled this wasn't bad/"douchey" at all; could have been a "bad call out" but really wasn't, he simply stated how it was.
October 6th, 2013 at 2:10 AM ^
The guys above are saying it's classless for a coach to call out a college guy in the media and I agree with them.
October 6th, 2013 at 2:14 AM ^
Good for you. I don't. Sorry I bothered to explain myself.
FWIW, it's classless to let your team down. But he's only 20 years old, regardless that he's worthy of making millions as we speak, so yeah it's classless for Spurrier to have laid out the truth in a read-between-the lines manner.

Spurrier said Clowney didn't play because he didn't WANT to. Not that that he was hurt, not that he was too sore, but because he didn't WANT to play. You call that the truth. It's Spurrier's opinion. He's entitled to his opinion, maybe he's even right, but there was absolutely nothing "read between the lines" in Spurrier's statement. It's classless at best. Spurrier is using his media access to publicly attack a player's character. What's going to happen if Clowney responds in kind?
October 6th, 2013 at 2:09 AM ^
had a front row seat to Lattimore's injury and how it affected his draft status ie $$$$$$$
Clowney's been dogging it all year, looks like a classic case of just trying to make it to the NFL. Spurrier's right to call him out and I imagine he has far more evidence of Clowney dogging it than anyone else.

October 6th, 2013 at 8:18 AM ^
October 6th, 2013 at 9:11 AM ^
Maybe he is dogging it so he can avoid being drafted by a 4-12 NFL team (or worse)
October 6th, 2013 at 8:35 AM ^
I can't pretend to know whether a kid's injury is real or not. However, I don't think the League would have punished Clowney much at all if he had honestly said, "It is not worth the risk to my financial futrure. I'm sitting the year out. If he is somehow being dishonest about it, I think that will hurt him a lot more." Could be wrong, but I don't think so.

It may require surgery.
October 6th, 2013 at 2:30 AM ^
Yeah this is what I don't get. It's not like Clowney just spontaneously made this up. He missed practice Thursday because of it, and it's entirely plausible that he was actually too sore to play.

Love how idiots here are judging Clowney. How many have you have ever been in a position where they could already be a millionaire because you have dominated a level you showed you are too good for but had to risk it all for another year because of the NFL and NCAA's plantation master mentality?
The guy wants to be paid and doesn't want to be exploited in this corrupt fucking college game any longer. Blaming him for being a "bad teammate" is taking hilariously naive and child-like view of the situation.
October 6th, 2013 at 2:34 AM ^
I really hope this post is a joke.
October 6th, 2013 at 2:44 AM ^
No but you expecting him to care more about something like the 2013 South Carolina Gamecocks football season more than the rest of his life (which he would already be set for with fair rules) is most definitely a joke.
