OT: Tigers/afternoon baseball Open Thread
Tigers finishing up a series with the Royals today. Good guys jumped out to a quick lead, it's 1-0 after 1.
Other afternoon games today include O's vs. Angels, Reds vs. Cubs, and Braves vs. Padres a little later.
How has the season played out so far compared to your expectations?
i want to thank dombrowski for not giving a shit about the bullpen as usual in the offseason. Unfuckinbelieveable. And i was just thinking , wow maybe he has come around the last couple games. WTF . VALTERDE
tigers should like 17 games over .500
between leyland 's managing and valTERDe, my goodness
Do tell
I dislike Valverde as much as the next guy, but using ValTERDe reminds me way too much of juvenile State fans thinking it is clever to invoke to scUM.
Seriously though - that outing from Jose Alvarez on Sunday means he is likely to be dealt for a closer at some poi t before the trade deadline. I just hope we don't have to give up a front-line prospect to get a stop-gap closer when Dombrowski could have signed Soriano this off-season.
Who would you have close? Oh, right. There aren't much better options...
They arent pitching him as many innings as they should right now, so might as well make him the closer
While I do agree with you, he gave up a run today in one inning. He isn't the solution since he can't pitch every inning in every game. There needs to be more options than Smyly in the pen.
There aren't many better options!?
Drew Smyly, Luke Putkonen, Darin Downs, Benoit and Jose Ortega are all better at this point. Valverde is blowing 1 in 4 saves and the advanced stats point to it not getting better. Just because Leyland throws Coke out there doesn't mean no one else is a better option.
You can't stop him, you can only hope to contain.. Damn it. :(
DERRRRR.
Prince is entirely not the problem.
the only reason Soriano i think was not signed was it would of cost a 1st round draft pick, otherwise i think he would of been a Tiger
gotta be some teams out their willing to deal
Gregerson has look alright with San Diego, Rex Brothers with Colorodo. Bobby Parnell with the Mets , somebody on the dodgers who will be out of it by than.
stay away from any late inning guys the brewers have.
I might as well ask, is it worth trading Porcello, and moving Smyly in as a starter with Alvarez as a possible 6th starter
just throwing it out their.
another job well done by ValTURDe and Coke
Have we even won a game in extra innings this season ?
Rest assured though, we'll see his dumb ass walking out to the mound again the next time a save is on the line. Send a fucking child out there to close it, anyone but this damn clown.
Because this is a problem that only JV can see? You don't really think others aren't noticing this?
How does this turd still have a job?
There is nothing more frustrating than watching this bullpen blow lead after lead after lead. It's inexcusable to have a lineup this good with relief pitching this bad.
Do you honestly not remebers Tigers games 10 years ago? Getting shelled for 8 runs in the first inning is not fun.
So you found a really bad team losing early in the game more frustrating than a really talented team blowing late leads? Ok...
any better myself. . .
Is it time to try a starter in the 'pen? The Tigers seem to have more starting pitching than they need and Valverde sure doesn't inspire confidence.
It's not worth stealing from Peter to pay Paul, this situation needs to solved via a trade.
They kinda have Smyly in the pen already.
Just think - it could be worse. We could have kept Jason Grilli and had to deal with his 23 saves and perfect sv. percentage.
Only Jim Leyland puts his worst pitchers in the game in the most critical moments. And he sits guys who could help and subs for them when they do play. Leyland has a very good career record as a manager, but when has he had little talent? If the Tigers were in any other division Leyland might have been fired already. He's addicted to Coke and he doesn't know when to say goodbye to bums. The sad part is that by the time the Tigers get a new manager their window may have closed.....
Leyland doesn't sign/fire players. That isn't his job. I'm not really sure what you expect him to do.
It would be naive to think that Leyland doesn't play a key role in cutting players or who the Tigers should pursue. What do I expect him to do? Stop throwing Phil Coke into the game in critical moments. Take Valverde out of the closer role. Stop sacrificing players already in scoring position, especially on the second AB of the game with a guy hitting above .300. Play Tuiasosopo more since he is hitting better and getting on base more than their best hitting OF. Play Don Kelly much less. I'm sure I can keep going but I'll stop.
I agree that the offense has been underwhelming, but the Royals are the only team giving up fewer runs than the Tigers, and no matter how many stars you have in your lineup, good pitching will almost always cancel out good hitting. Unfortunately the Tigers horrid management and Phil Coke\Father Fat will continue to make average hitters look like world beaters.
Well we only lost by one, so at least our run differential still looks good, which is really all that matters.
Are you in high school? Honest question, since you do not seem to understand very basic stats concepts...
It's really frustrating that we draft mostly pitching prospects every year and can't seem to find bullpen help.
Ugh, thanks for bringing the draft up.
Another horrible draft for the Tigers this year, nothing like spending all your top picks on effing RPers, and there's no Avila to bail the lousy draft out like in 2008.
Coffee is for closers!... A.. Always ..B.. Be... C .. Closing!... 3rd place is you're fired!
