Favorite players by jersey numbers
I'm sure this has been done before, but an Ohio fan and myself usually have some sort of random contest/test of fandom the week leading up to The Game every year.
So #1-#10 who are your favorite Wolverines all-time?
I'll get us started #1-5, but I'm sure it will show my generation. Figured it could give us somthing to do throughout the night if we want to extend the list...
#1- Anthony Carter
#2- Charles Woodson
#3- Tripp Welborne
#4- Jimmy Harbaugh
#5- Erik Campbell?
I lied, I'm going to 6...
#6- Tyrone Wheatley
Hope this provides some entertainment while we drink tonight...

#7 Ricky Leach

I second that. Ricky Leach is one of the biggest reasons I'm a Michigan fan.

I am wearing a replica "M" home jersey with #7 on it right now. I am 45 years old. I realize how ridiculous that is, but you never really outgrow your childhood heroes.

#7 Chris Floyd. The beast.

I would have picked Marlin Jackson at #3

We might as well not even discuss #16. I think we all know who our favorite is there. Damnit. I told myself I wasn't gonna cry.

For 99.9% of Michigan fans, probably. Nothing against Denard, but John Navarre was the QB and my favorite player duing those influential childhood years that make a kid become a lifelong Michigan fan (8-11 years old for me). He may not be in the same class as Denard or some of the great QB's to play for Michigan, but he's still my favorite player.

Seriously, I respect you immensely. Even John Navarre wasn't John Navarre's favorite player. I have never, ever, never, ever heard anyone say John Navarre was their favorite player. You have some gusto my friend, and for that you have my respect.
November 23rd, 2012 at 9:49 PM ^
... but he holds a number of Michigan passing records, won a Big Ten Championship and beat Ohio in his senior season. In terms of production, this isn't as much of a stretch as you're making it out to be.
Denard is one of the most exciting College Football players ever to lace (or not) up a pair of cleats, but show a little respect for the other #16.

Thanks. I completely understand why people aren't high on Navarre. An unknown QB taking over for a big time player like Drew Henson had to be the most frustrating thing ever. Add to that his lack of mobility, knockdowns at the line even though he's 6' 6'', and the tough losses during his career, and you have a very frustrated fanbase.
My friends still make fun of me to this day for saying Navarre is my all time favorite Michigan player. But man, as a 9 or 10 year old kid just getting into Michigan football as a serious fan and seeing Navarre throw that deep ball. It's something special that can never be matched.

I loved watching Navarre. He's definitley one of the most underappreciated Wolverines of our time, and the 2003 Michigan-Ohio game was a classic.
Respect, man.

Anthony Carter was All-America in 1981 and 1982...Smith was getting the ball to him both seasons.
Not saying he's as good as Denard, obviously...but let's not suggest the discussion is over before it even begins.

From an old timer, 5 would be Gordie Bell. And while I'm at it, 9 Dennis Franklin.

LOL
If they ever put a ring of honor or something like that at the stadium I'll take my choices to be up there over his
Donovan Warren over Tyronne Wheatley? I mean.....seriously?
November 23rd, 2012 at 8:59 PM ^
I'm sure there's an old timer or two who will tell you Tyrone Wheatley didn't hold a candle to the original number eight, Karl S Staatz.
November 23rd, 2012 at 9:03 PM ^
I think even the old timers know that Wheatly didn't wear number 8
November 23rd, 2012 at 9:11 PM ^
looking through Bentley for two responses at once and then don't re-read before posting. I'll go sit in the box, two minutes, feel shame.
Not exactly funny anymore, but it would be Lawrence S Rohehm with the old timers support over Wheatley.

I'm actually a lot closer to you than mGrowOld; my circa 1997 memories of Woodson are more snippets than anything else, and nothing before him really registered (HTTV and the winged helmets did, though) so obviously I didn't ever see Carter or Wheatley or Howard or any of those guys live.

To be fair I'm debating favorite jersey's of Michigan players with my fellow Michigan fans, some of who barely remember the Big House without lights.

Kovacs at 11 is great, because for 32 I can't top Anthony Thomas.
