OT: Brian Kelly - considered by MSU or UM?
So, he was a Michigan based coach who had a lot of success at a lower level (like Tressel). Why don't I remember him being discussed for the MSU or UM vacancies recently? I have heard rumors about things (like cover ups for players), but those are without support AFAIK.
Don't get me wrong. Hoke is great. I am just curious because my ND friends ask me.

You are not seriously suggesting that we'd be better off with Kelly are you? Hoke is the real deal my friend. ND is living on borrowed time. The will get their comeuppance....

While there were many a rumor about Brian Kelly from his tenure at GVSU and CMU, the only animadversions we could google in 2007 was an incident involving CMU players, recruited by our stodgy friend Mike Debord, in which Brian Kelly remarked that they would not talk to police because of their culture.
Tribune article with the Kelly Quote
USA Today article of a similar essence
Many speculated that he wouldn't fit into the Michigan Culture because of this incident. True or not, I can not aver. We can ruminate about Brian Kelly and his peripatetic circuit to Big Time Football, but aside from idle gossiping we can know only so much about his perigrinations to ND.
Was it an error of omission to disregard Brian Kelly and his resume in 2007? Do you not have perfect faith in Brady Hoke and his ability, like in that Jodorosky film, to turn poop into gold?

That's pretty sad when one takes Dantonio over Kelly because of character issues. I guess Dantonio sucks less.

In order for that fable to apply, wouldn't he have to be something that we desired? I think it is pretty clear that he is a good coach and that he is a dick. Perhaps he would have been a better hire than RR, but then Michigan might not have ended up with Hoke or guys like Denard.
That being said, I for one am really looking forward to Alabama's riveting 3-2 win over ND in the NC game. Should be exciting stuff.

that's funny to watch.
But I said it before, the dude has been remarkably successful everywhere he has coached. And he is a good recruiter. I don't think anyone took ND seriously this year, but there they are.
I want them to lose to USC so bad, but we all saw today that USC is a team that is spoiled rotten by their coach, and just going through the motions. Their receivers don't block. And the Trojans don't play defense anymore.
When Pete Carroll and Nick Holt left, USC's defensive intelligence fell off a cliff.

That's the key. I'm guessing the high school talent on the defensive side of the ball isn't that far below what Carroll was working with, but the results are a lot worse. Lane is going to have an interesting decision at the end of the year since his dad is the defensive coordinator.

Those who assert he's just a one-year wonder are fooling themselves just as much as those who think Meyer can't coach.

Out in the world, when someone is being hired for a management position, a "beet-red temper that's funny to watch" isn't generally considered a positive.
College athletics is probably the only area of society left where one isn't supposed to even think about how the person you're about to employ is likely to treat the people he's being hired to manage. Even if you're hiring someone to lay the axe to a division, you expect him to do it professionally.

I dislike Brian Kelly for the same reason I can't stand Notre Dame so it's fitting.
I hate Notre Dame because so many people (and very frustrating to see this in Michigan) like them for the dumbest reasons like "They're Catholic!" or "They're Irish!" or "Remember when they were great??"
I don't like Brian Kelly because people go "Oh I root for Notre Dame because Brian Kelly used to coach at Grand Valley and Central.

Is having a great year - yes. But let's not assume that "we missed out" just because it looks likely he'll play for a NC.
Just because a Coach is having the typ of year he is having, doesn't necessarily mean that he is head and shoulders above everyone else. Sometimes in College Football the chips fall properly and you get lucky - it's true for every team. Sometimes they don't, and your record reflects that you are not that good, even though you might be.
Look at Gene Chizik - Dude won a NC in his first year at Auburn, now he's on the chopping block.
I think Kelly is a good Coach because he has a track record of winning elsewhere. You can say that for a lot of Coaches - Hoke and Dantonio included. But just because Kelly is staring down the barrell of the NC Game doesn't mean he's necessarily better than Hoke or Dantonio, for example. I think all are good Coaches, although I'm partial to Hoke - partly because he is OUR coach, but also because you can visibly see that he is a good coach from our product on the field.
There are only a handful of Coaches that I would put in a class by themselves, or perhaps even only two - They are Nick Saban and Bill Snyder.

Every coach knows the drill--an interviewer lobs a softball and you're expected to do a bit of PR for the university that employs you. "Coach, tell us about the work you're doing with the fundraiser for Mott." "Well, Jim, we're happy to help out any way we can--the work they do over there is amazing. It puts football in perspective and reminds you what the University is really all about."
Or maybe you talk a little bit about the story you'd seen in the student paper about some great thing that happened that week at the law school, or the engineering department...anything at all, really. You're just proud to have the opportunity to work at such a great institution.
In the run-up to their Sugar Bowl three years ago I heard Kelly interviewed on the radio in Cincinnati and they tossed him one of these--not as specific as my example, because as far as I know Kelly wasn't visibly involved in any volunteer projects or fundraising, but something generic like "talk to us a little bit about the University."
And Kelly proceeded to talk at length about how happy he was to have been able to put the University of Cincinnati on the map.
Wrong answer, Coach. The purpose of the exercise is for you to do public relations for your employer, not for you to disparage the history of your employer to glorify yourself. I wish I had a sound file of the interview--it really was worse than I've described it here but I can't remember exactly what he said.
Ask Brian Kelly a question and he'll tell you what's on his mind. And what's on Brian Kelly's mind is Brian Kelly.
