Not really surprising he picked Alabama. They were the favorites all along.

They are a little thin at RB, good for them.

And figured he'd get a lot more early playing time at Bama.
On a non-sarcastic note, he probably looked at the depth charts and realized Bama's RB3/4 would get a lot of PT, sooo yeah, playing time no matter what.

Bama wants him as a WR.
September 8th, 2012 at 11:00 AM ^
I have no doubt he will be really good at that position too.

of kids who don't have the slightest actual intention of coming here. It's a testament to the tradition we have, both athletically and academically.

Another local kid going to Bama, just like my favorite Crimson Tide player ever:

"I know there won't be so much pressure now on me at the end," he said. "I already know the school I will attend. I haven't told the coaches yet. I plan on letting them know this week.
"I will announce between Florida, Georgia, Clemson and Alabama. I chose the school where I know I can see myself. I can see myself playing for that team and winning a national championship."

I still don't get why Michigan can't pull in top flight running backs. For a school that's all but screaming WE WANT TO RUN THE BALL, they really struggle to grab RBs that are in the top 20 of their position. And have struggled for years. Just baffling to me.
September 8th, 2012 at 1:04 PM ^
DeVeon Smith is one of these. 247's composite rankings (from 247, Scout, Rivals, and ESPN) have him as the #14 RB and #207 overall in his class.
September 8th, 2012 at 2:02 PM ^
Just as we lose Devin Smith, we get a DeVeon Smith.
September 8th, 2012 at 4:34 PM ^
I don't quite understand how 247's composite ranking thing works. At his position, Scout has Smith ranked #10, 247 at #16, ESPN at #29, and Rivals at #31. That comes out to an average of 21.5, not 14. Either way, Smith isn't one of those consenses top backs that I was talking about. A guy like Derrick Green is, but all signs have him headed to Auburn.

For the last couple of years Denard has been the running game. Last year was a step in the right direction with Fitz toting the rock for over 1000yds. But once the pro style offense starts to take hold and the O-line recruits from the last couple of classes start bullying defenses, then we'll probably have RBs beating down the door.
September 8th, 2012 at 11:57 AM ^
But it's not just Denard. Who was the last blue chip RB that Michigan actually landed? Grady is the last one I can think of and that was years ago, not to mention it didn't exactly pan out wonderfully.

I meant a really elite level recruit, hence "blue chip." The backs you list were all good recruits , but none of them were really world-beaters or anything (Minor was Rivals' #109 player and ESPN's #34 RB, for instance, definitely good but not what I would consider "elite"). Of course Michigan can land good/solid RBs, but I was just saying that RB seems like a position where Michigan seems to have strangely struggled to get a really top-tier level recruit.
And I am talking about just landing recruits, so the "sometimes those stars aren't as shiny as they look" doesn't really apply, and the idea that the star ratings don't matter is a debate this board/blog has had plenty of times.

I didn't say anything about Hoke (nor did MrVociferous, for what's it's worth).
September 8th, 2012 at 4:38 PM ^
I was just saying going back to like maybe Anthony Thomas, Michigan really hasn't had that many (or any) studs at RB. And for a school that likes to run the ball (even with RichRod) and considers itself an elite football school, its just odd to not have many. Hopefully Hoke changes that, but losing on Ty Issac hurts, and I don't think Green is coming here either. The kid has SEC written all over him.

I was talking more about the top 20 guys. Of which there are...20 every year. For a top 25 program, that likes to run the ball, you'd think we'd be pulling in 1 a year, and we're not. We're getting a fringe 20 guy like once every three years.

The kid's from Alabama, although it blows my mind why anyone would want to play for Saban. Doesn't the state of Michigan have any top talent at RB in 2014?

RB tend to go pro in three years which opens up for more recruits.
