It's no secret that Jack Johnson and James Wisniewski are two of the worst locker room cancers in the NHL. They need to be very careful with Ryan Murray.
Jack Johnson is a lockerroom cancer? I've never heard that before, I'm not trying to sound like a homer either
From what I have heard myself and what other people have said, Jack has never been the greatest teammate. It's the ego and attitude that usually comes with being better than everyone else for your entire life.
It's a strong indication this is going on behind the scenes when a player is performing at a high level, and abruptly traded to a bottom feeder who will take the risk.
take-charge locker room leader to overcome same. Other than front office changes and some magic, not sure what it will take to turn around this franchise. The player talent has obviously not been a problem as alumni have gone on to bigger and better things with the rest of the NHL...
Although I really liked this pick Rielly is a very very good player. But overall I just don't like Brian Burke.
That one was obvious. The only question was when. He was either going to go to the Hurricanes via draft this year or as a UFA next year. The only other option was to the Rangers.
When he declined the 10 year extension, everyone knew he'd be traded. And going to Carolina to be with his bro was the most logical.
Honestly, I think the Pens had the best draft so far of day 1. And they're still looking to unload Martin.
But not if Winnipeg takes him from us. Winnipeg isn't known for being pushy or anti-college are they? Better than going to the Kings
According to the TSN commentary, the franchise has a history of bringing guys up right away, but the current GM has said that won't be their philosophy going forward.
Sounds like WInnipeg is willing to take their time with Jacob, which sounds good for Michigan.
I'd be shocked if he played any less than two years at Michigan. I've not seen one scouting source identify his development curve as anything less than two years.
It's interesting that 7 of the first 9 picks are defensemen. Is that typical? Do teams look to draft defensemen like NFL teams look for QBs?
NO this is a complete 180 from typical. Everyone knew this draft was defenseman deep but usually the high skill guys go early.
Having this many defensemen go this early is pretty atypical (4 in the top 10 in 2011, 5 in 2010, 3 in 2009, 5 in 2008, 2 in 2007, 1 in 2006). I think the for the most part, teams tend to go with the best player that's available by the scouting reports, and more often than not those are the flashy, talented forwards. Wanting a certain position might lead a team to go a little bit lower in the ranking, but I think has roughly as much influence as the intangibles like character, toughness, maturity, etc.
On the other hand, I know the talent in this year's draft was considered to be spread out and not real top-heavy, so going with defense might be viewed as a "safer" choice. Being successful as a forward has a lot to do with scoring touch, and chemistry, and things that are more fickle and make them more likely to flame out. Playing solid defense is more about toughness, good hockey sense, reptition, etc., and I think it's easier to project who will and won't be successful.
TSN.ca is apparently streaming the 1st round live. Hopefully we'll see PDG get picked up toward the end of it but not by the kings
I predict PDG and Boo Nieves going early 2nd round
I actually predict PDG goes at #31. For whatever reason, Columbus has a history of picking up Wolverines. Off the top of my head:
- Jack Johnson
- Shawn Hunwick
- Matt Rust
- Kevin Lynch
- Chad Kolarik
I'd agree with this. I'm anticipating that Nieves might go before PDG, which may surprise some people here.
Nice to see one of our guys go top 10. And if I'm reading this right he was the only college player taken in the first round.
And I know there are a couple other Devils fans here. I know it's spelled differently and I'm sure he is a great player, but Stefan Matteau? Really? It just seems like you aren't going to see many Devils fans lining up to get a Matteau jersey. For the love of God, don't give him number 32.
Edit: Even though the first name is spelled differently, he is in fact the son of THAT Matteau. I know it's over, but man this kid better be good.
Not quite: Brady Skjei is supposed to be headed to the University of Minnesota, but I believe he is the only other player drafted in the first round headed to NCAA.
There are a few more. The first round picks (currently) committed to NCAA programs are: Trouba (9 - Winnipeg), Girgensons (14 - Buffalo) is committed to Vermont, Jankowski (21 - Calgary) is committed to Providence, Matheson (23 - Florida) is committed to Boston College, Schmaltz (25 - St. Louis) is commited to North Dakota, and Skeji (28 - NY Rangers) is committed to Minnesota
