Warren Buffett - Michigan Fan?
Everyone knows that Warren Buffett is a huge fan and supporter of Nebraska football. During the Person to Person show on CBS, Buffett gave a tour of his Berkshire Hathaway offices. In a cabinet outside his office he had a large display of memorabilia including a Nebraska football helmet. But prominently displayed above that was a Michigan helmet (along with a Kansas City Chiefs helmet).
I believe Buffett wrote the forward to Bo's Lasting Lessons book. Is this related? Does anyone know why he has a UM helmet?
Before I get too excited, I should point out that he also has a sign above his office door that reads "Invest like a champion today". Ugh. The Hell with Notre Dame!

I heard that his secretary is a UM fan, but he isn't.

This surprises me. I thought that the MSU national brand would cause Buffet to be a big Spartan supporter.

Buffet's business partner, Charlie Munger, is a Michigan grad and has donated something like $25M to the school. It's possible that may have something to do with it.
February 8th, 2012 at 10:03 PM ^
Chump change. Stephen Ross donated $100M for a new business school for students who can't read good, and want to learn to do other things good.

A $100M school for ANTS?!?!?!?

That helmet, supposedly, was the last thing Bo signed. There was a big deal made about it being delivered to Buffett after Bo's death.

I'm pretty sure that Craig Ross has a story about this.

Charlie Munger, Buffett's #2 at Berkshire Hathaway, is a big Michigan donor (that $1.2 million is the tip of the iceberg) and fan (he also attended UM in the 1940s before he had to leave for WWII). I imagine that might have something to do with it. Awesome though.

Perhaps Tremendous can secure an interview with the oracle from Omaha so we can find out?

You can read the whole story in "Hail to the Victors 2009". Unfortunately with Maple Street Press out of business you probably can't get a copy of it but Brian briefly mentions the story in his preview page.;

And I swear I'm not making this up but Craig Ross details how he somehow found himself deputized to take Bo's last or second-to-last autograph to Warren Buffett, of all people. Craig isn't making this up, either: there are pictures. It's an incredible, preposterous story.

But I was dating Warren's daughter for a while, but then they took my binoculars away.

You are making it a lot harder to dislike Alabama despite my hatred of Saban.
February 9th, 2012 at 9:27 AM ^
I agree with all of these comments RDT. Although I am officially not allowed to hate Alabama because my daughter got her masters there.

Careful now. For all we know he's just biding his time, working his way above the 100 point threshold so that he can troll the crap out of this site the week of the Jerry World game.

Or is that called stalking? I suspect that's a joke, but it must be over my head... am I too young, too much of a yankee, to get it?
I do agree that you are certainly an interesting Mgoblogger.

Buffet's secretary makes $200,000 per year.

we could rename Crysler Center after Buffett!

I seriously hope that you forgot the put the "/s" at the end of that post. I like my stadiums to sport the names of former Michigan coaches.
February 9th, 2012 at 12:10 PM ^
I agree, but $1B is enough money to make me reconsider my stance on that issue.
February 9th, 2012 at 1:19 PM ^
Now that we know what you are we're just haggling over the price?
February 11th, 2012 at 1:24 PM ^
Ross got the B School for $100 million. I think the Athletic Dept's annual budget is around $100 million. This would pay for 10 years!
February 9th, 2012 at 2:42 PM ^
You've apparently renamed it as well, instead of after Fritz CRISLER.

Who I believe graduated from U of M Law School in 1954 or 1952 and formed a law firm (Munger, Tolles & Richardson) in Los Angeles. He then fortunately met a client, Warren Buffett, and the rest is history. The practice of law became not as interesting as it once was for Charlie.
Munger has been very very generous regarding U of M Law School, an institution that is constantly and aggressively seeking donations..........every six months.

Charlie Munger went to undergrad at M (although didn't graduate because we left to serve in WWII) and later graduated from Harvard Law.
