OT: Colts fire Caldwell
Colts fire Caldwell after two seasons. Link below. Wonder what this does for Jim Tressel and his duties as replay assistant?

I still dont buy Tressel has a job. The job title sounds too made-up

Raised as a diehard Colts fan and if they hire Jim Tressel, my ugly tears of anger and bitterness will flood the Midwest. You've been warned.

I hear ya. Born and raised in Indy, but if they make Tressel the HC I will no longer be supporting the Colts until he's gone.

They fired him, he really couldn't help that PM got hurt & that his back up sucked. Along with he had good seasons before this past season. Oh well.

Peyton Manning could not have fixed what happened this season. If he had been quarterback, sure, they probably would have won more than 2 games, but Peyton Manning's injury was not their only problem.

I am so happy this happened. The guy flat out couldn't coach. This year without Peyton Manning just proved it. Caldwell would just stand there and do nothing, not even blink.

I've always wondered this myself. I felt like, watching Colts games, it was just Peyton. He ran the show on offense, and Caldwell was just along for the ride.

Dungy's style was the same, but everyone loved him.

What does it mean for RR?
(sorry, I couldn't resist)

How does this affect Yuri Wright's visiting status for last weekend?

Gunner Kiel forgoes his freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior seasons and signs with Colts.

The owner is clearing out the Peyton Manning loyalists before they draft Luck. Same reason why he fired Polian.
January 17th, 2012 at 3:27 PM ^
but how is he going to get rid of Jim Irsay? From the sounds of it Irsay thinks he can keep Peyton and Luck. But, I heard that from Bristol, Inc., so it's most likely not true

Is it a simple financial issue, i.e. having both Manning and Luck would put them over the cap?
Certainly having Andrew Luck back-up a guy like Peyton Manning for a season or two would be beneficial to everyone in the organization? I don't even like Manning, but he's a great QB and a total professional. I can't think of anyone better to teach a young QB.

Manning is healthy enough to earn the $28 million bonus due in March, and the Colts are good enough everywhere else on their team that they can afford to have all that cap room tied up at QB. Those are 2 pretty big ifs, IMO.
Best case scenario would be to have Peyton rework his deal in order keep him in Indy next year to see if he is healthy. If not, you cut him before the season and if he's healthy then Luck sits and watches for a year and you either trade Peyton at the end of the year or cut him and go with Luck.

Do you really want to run the risk of a Montana-Young Favre-Rodgers type deal?

I'm assuming you realize that "he" is Jim Irsay because Jim Irsay owns the Colts. Right?
January 17th, 2012 at 3:25 PM ^
As a colts fan, I am SO HAPPY he is gone. I always wondered what went on behind the scenes because he didn't do or say anything while on the field.

Does anyone know who the potential cantidates are? It's too bad we couldn't get Luck AND Harbaugh, that would be a killer combination.

So how long until Tressel is named DC?
January 17th, 2012 at 3:30 PM ^
Candidates: Bill Cohwer, John Gruden, Bill Parcels, bunch of DC with no head coaching experience....These are the usual first candidates.
January 17th, 2012 at 3:38 PM ^
is heading up the search committee. First call....Tony Dungy.
January 17th, 2012 at 3:53 PM ^
Second call: Les Miles.

But before anything else: BOAT RIDE!

Tressel well positioned to step in for the job after a token search
January 17th, 2012 at 4:29 PM ^
the Big Ten Championship Game is in Indianapolis for a while. Please don't make us play in Tressel's home stadium.

One minute you've started off your first season as HC at 14-0, then the next thing you know you're out the door. The colts are about to go through a massive change. From NFL darlings to a dark team that betrays the face of the league. Tressel , I can smell him a mike away.

I pretty much expected this. Without Peyton Manning all year the entire team fell apart. I always thought Caldwell was a lame duck after Dungy retired. Let the Gruden rumors commence!
January 17th, 2012 at 6:50 PM ^
JON GRUDEN!!! PLEASE!!! HE LOVES QBS!!! THE SHERRIFF + BABY SHERRIFF = QB HEAVEN
January 17th, 2012 at 9:19 PM ^
Not so sure this firing is justified. Any team that loses their starting QB in the NFL is not going to have a good season. Not to mention a first ballot half of famer like Peyton Manning. This just goes to show you how important the QB position is in this sport. Maybe the front office should've done a better job with personnel and made sure they had a suitable back up. How come the GM still has his job? I'm not even a Colts fan but I still think it's a ridiculous firing.

things worked out pretty well for New England a few years ago when they were in a similar situation wouldn't you say?
