OT: Aussie Rules Football Grand Final @ Midnight (ET) on ESPN2
Way OT but it's late, and it's the Grand Final: Collingwood vs. Geelong. I haven't watched Aussie Rules Football in many, many years. First encountered it in the dorm, where the lounge had cable and PASS. I wondered is it rugby? No, it's not rugby - what the hell is it?! It's weird to see them dribble that big oblong ball, punching it to pass, and the goal umps pointing with one or two hands to single a score. Huge field. Anyway, check out how they play football down under.

And if it ends in a draw, they'll replay the entire thing. Happened last year. The Magpies of Collingwood prevailed, eventually.

dont try to learn the rules. Aussie football is SO much better if you just watch in blissful ignorance

Anybody else want to play?
October 1st, 2011 at 12:55 AM ^
I have no freaking idea wtf is going on here but these guys are killing each other out there.
I like.

I have no idea what's going on, and I love it. Zoltan needs to dominate this when he tires of toying with the mortals in the NFL.
October 1st, 2011 at 12:52 AM ^
I kinda miss the long white coats the goal umps used to wear.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:14 AM ^
Reminded me of the Panama Jack guy.
October 1st, 2011 at 12:53 AM ^
I've watched one game before, and it instantly became my favorite sport outside the "big four." And I have no idea what's going on.
October 1st, 2011 at 12:54 AM ^
If they don't win I'll be shocked. They're unbelievable. Geelong is good but just the best of the rest.
October 1st, 2011 at 12:56 AM ^
Then I root for the underdog. Go Geelong.
October 1st, 2011 at 12:59 AM ^
What is up with the reverse throw in by the ref?
October 1st, 2011 at 1:03 AM ^
That's a way the ball goes back into play sometimes.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:05 AM ^
Yeah, I see that but why?
October 1st, 2011 at 1:06 AM ^
I'm gonna guess if no one has possesion when the ball goes out of bounds, the ref throws it in.
October 1st, 2011 at 9:05 AM ^
It's like a faceoff in hockey, but the ref faces backwards so there are no accusations that he's playing favorites by throwing it so a particular team is more likely to get the ball.

Do they have something against long shorts?
Dudes in bun-huggers lookin like 70's-80's nba... Fab Five needed in Australia.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:05 AM ^
Maybe it's easier to tackle somebody in long shorts?
October 1st, 2011 at 1:06 AM ^
10 hours 53 minutes to go...

The MCG is the Melbourne Cricket Ground, it holds 100,000 and once packed in 120,000. I would imagine there are probably about 100,000 there today or yesterday or whenever this match is being played. Is this live? I have no idea what time it is in Australia right now or even what day it is.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbourne_Cricket_Ground
October 1st, 2011 at 1:11 AM ^
It says live in my info bar.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:12 AM ^

That's a broken ginger nose.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:18 AM ^
Does 32 have eligibility left? Dude can kick from bad angles.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:21 AM ^
Geelong answers back.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:21 AM ^
Now, why can't we have a cool signal like that for touchdowns?
October 1st, 2011 at 1:31 AM ^
Mikoyan, any travelling pictures this week?

the injured player has to sit out 20 minutes because he is being "stretchered" off and in "enormous pine"
October 1st, 2011 at 1:33 AM ^
A dislocated shouldah.
"Steve Johnson does the business!"...
October 1st, 2011 at 1:33 AM ^
This is crazy... Dude dislocates his shoulder and the "doctor" commentator said they removed him permanently from the game "too soon because they should have put the shoulder back in place and seen if he could have continued."

Not to many sports where you have this much physical contact and a dislocated shoulder isn't grounds to come out of the game.

"Sidebottom squeezes it through"...
October 1st, 2011 at 1:39 AM ^
Ha! Kicked it right into the ump, so he knows it's a goal.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:42 AM ^
Holy crap! What a goal from a really bad angle!
October 1st, 2011 at 1:42 AM ^
Dude looks like Mickelson with a wedge.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:43 AM ^
My first thought was "man there are a lot of refs out there..." And then I realized thaty both teams are wearing black and white stripes... Anyone else find the color scheme confusing after watching so much American ball? At least they're different orientations I guess...
October 1st, 2011 at 1:49 AM ^
I think Geelong has Blue horizontal stripes.
October 1st, 2011 at 1:44 AM ^
Anyone have a Sabermetrics Australian handy, I'm having a hard time figuring out who are the most efficient players. Cracka does look like a star though
October 1st, 2011 at 1:51 AM ^
Travis Cloke from Collingwood is the top scorer. He has really proved his worth in this match hitting from 65 meters then from a terrible angle at 50 meters.

Halftime = bedtime. Night all. Go Cats!
October 1st, 2011 at 2:22 AM ^
Did anybody see the "Grand Sprint" at the half? Wish they would do this in College/NFL, would be awesome to watch Denard dust everyone.
skip to 1:10, this is from the 2009 grand sprint since 2011 is not listed.
October 1st, 2011 at 2:26 AM ^
but it's better to be playing in the game than sprinting at halftime.
October 1st, 2011 at 2:15 PM ^
Right, but maybe he would be up by enough points at the half that he wouldn't mind sprinting.
October 1st, 2011 at 3:23 AM ^
18.11.119 to 12.9.81 They lead after 3 and won going away.

We acutally have Nationals next weekend in Austin, Tx. There used to be a team in Detroit, but they went inactive awhile ago. There are around 40 mens teams and 10 womens teams. Check out usafl.com.

Geelong! Geelong! Geelong! 3 Premierships in 5 years!
