Jay Hopson resigns
Was going to be demoted from his defensive coordinator position, but chose to quit instead.
Personally, I like Brian's take on it back in 2009
Instant reaction: good luck with that, Memphis.

So he decommited from his defense? Seems about right...

they were averaging 628 yards given up per game and one team they played was Arkansas state.

"Jay, effectively immediately you're fired. Here are the reasons:
A. The 628 yards per game surrendered over 2 games.
B. Surrending 53 points per game over 2 games.
C. featuring a defense ranked 112th ranking nationally after only 2 games.
D. Surrendering 47 points, 611 yards and 28 first downs to Arkansas State of the Sun Belt conference.
Oh, so you're going to resign? Well then don't the let the door hit your ass on the way out."

Just gave up 334 yards passing and 3 passing TD's to Maine

Yup. When I heard most the RR coaches went to Pitt, I thought "Welp there goes probably the best Big East D thatll morph into the worst."

There aren't. Memphis is 120th, not 112th.
September 14th, 2011 at 5:50 PM ^
Good God, the aftermath of our D problems continues....why couldn't he have done that when he was here?
September 14th, 2011 at 6:04 PM ^
Instead we got GERG..... /crickets chirping.....maybe RR doesn't know a damn thing about defensive coaches.
September 14th, 2011 at 6:19 PM ^
He fired the one guy who might have known something.
September 14th, 2011 at 6:32 PM ^
He kinda sucked at everything except having a cool voice.
September 14th, 2011 at 7:19 PM ^
As I recall, he was pretty good at having a hot wife.
September 15th, 2011 at 9:48 AM ^
And how do you think he got his hot wife? By having an awesome voice. Women go crazy for voices like that.
September 14th, 2011 at 6:42 PM ^
it's impossible to avoid the conclusion that RR had less-than-stellar instincts when it came to hiring defensive coaches. That's putting it diplomatically.
September 14th, 2011 at 7:34 PM ^
My only problem with RR was that he hired friends (exception GERG) instead of good, fundamental coaches.
September 14th, 2011 at 7:47 PM ^
They were friends from the buffet/clinic circuit. That's how he came to know RR.
Hopson is the one guy that I still blame for the wet paperbag defense. The kids got fundamentally worse in every way during his tenure...GERG just finished the job.

And the only good one he hired, Shafer, was completely undermined going in to Purdue week 2008, and later run out of town by the other yahoos.
Hoke may not be an offensive super genius, but at least the man knows how to hire a Big Ten calibur coaching staff.

do their thing.
September 14th, 2011 at 10:45 PM ^
...to shredding defenses unfortunately included our own.
Still love the guy.

Never was a Hopson fan, but c'mon now, do we REALLY have any room to make fun of a team for having a bad defense?? Not to be a hater but c'mon
September 15th, 2011 at 8:44 AM ^
Unfortunately I find myself agreeing with you, I have not made fun of anyones defense the last few years, it may be that way for another year or so. I do think we are now moving in the right direction and will continue to do so.

So, Jay Hopson is the nations best Offensive Coordinator?
