Voluntary summer workouts
still not on the team
indefinite suspension ... is now officially over !
This is all Lou Holtz needs to declare that nd will win the MNC. As you know Irish, I could expound, but let's be civil .... at least for now. ( hmmm - kelley & tressel ... are they brothers or cousins or just go to the same church ? )
Go Blue !
Being such a simple minded person you're going to have to explain to me how his suspension is over when he hasn't been reinstated to the team.
can any ND student participate in summer workouts ? Answer - No.
Summer workouts are for ... well, student athletes in good standing (read football players specifically). If a player was actually suspended by the University (not the football coach) that student could not participate in any University sanctioned event ... including on site summer workouts.
For Floyd to be active with the team in summer workouts means that Kelley wants him prepared for the fall. Any wagers on him starting on 9/10/11 ?
Go Blue !
Its just the usual bantering .... chill people, its on topic.
BTW - what is the NCAA record for DUI's for any "star" player that gets to remain on the team ? Gotta be more than 3.
Go Blue !
We'll find out when Stonum gets his 3rd. I had high hopes for Grady.
Floyd hasn't had three DUI's...he had two drinking under age and one DUI. There is a big difference. I you going to stop the holier than thou bit now since we all know that our very own Stonum has 2 dui's and a probation violation?
I am sure he has and has had individual workouts assigned to him as part of his qualifiers to be reinstated to the team. The same sort of "voluntary" punishments you would expect a coach to deal out for a player on the team.
Wanting him prepared and in shape are 2 different things. If he is going to be prepared he needs playbooks, film study and contact this the coaches, all of which he doesn't have. He can keep himself in-shape and I am sure its a requirement for reinstatement as it would be for anyone trying to get (back) on the team.
chillin'
But Kelly has already stated that he will "play all games or none". If he's reinstated for summer workouts, albeit voluntary ones, he is likely on the path to the category of "none".
If ND improves in the second year of the spread the way I think they will, they could easily be undefeated going into the USC game in October. Stanford looks like their other tough game, and Stanford could fall off drastically this year with a new coach. ND has a typical ND schedule: two or three elite teams and a bunch of teams that will look good for the computer and Notredame Broadcasting Company.
Michigan isn't quite elite yet, and probably won't be by September 10, USC could be good or they could be faxing it in by October 22, and Stanford could be a sub-.500 team by Novermber 26.
ND could go undefeated or 11-1 this year. I really don't see them losing more than two games unless Michigan gets a lot better between now and then. I'm not saying they can't but I am saying that ND's offense should be better than Michigan's and their defense should be better than Michigan's. That isn't leaving a lot of "wiggle room" for the Maize and Blue.
Kelly is the best coach they have hired since Lou Holtz. With apologies to Yogi Berra, this is probably the year that Notre Dame becomes "Notre Dame" again.
. . . did you see the Tulsa game?
is baking some irish-Tater stew with his boy Kelly.
Just for the record ... I really was not very impressed with kelly's gun-slinging game day coaching. As read in an earlier post ... if one keeps predicting the return of the irish every single year ... the odds are that one day you may be right. nd is still lacking any quality bowl win since 1993 ... and they have their own freaking rules to get into the BCS.
Go Blue !
Tater has become the MGoBoard equivalent to Lou Holtz.
Navy.
I fear ND will be very, very good this year.
are you a ND fan who makes his way round these parts or a michigan fan who happens to be irish?
just so you know there IS a correct answer.
Likely your wrong answer but its my correct answer
From all I've seen you've been pretty civil, so I'll give you a pass.
I'm sure that means the world to a guy who's been a member on this site for twice as long as you have.
It's not important, but I've said it before that my I lost access to my old email and forgot my password so couldn't email it to myself.
And sadly, it is directly related to the size of my member.
You seem to be missing something.
I count 2 things missing.
Pure curiosity... what is he prohibited from that those "on the team" can do at this point? Is this just a case where he is allowed to do everything, but it still is not decided if he'll play when games come around?
I would say the 3 biggest things are film study, working with his coaches and having playbooks. Before this the only real team contact he had was at training table
No big surprise there. Good for you Kelly, way to make the right choice.
Stay classy ND
Kelly = Dantonio
Come on dude, that was a low blow.
Lets withhold judgment until we find out how Hoke deals with Stonum.
Better yet, let's withold judgment until we find out how Kelly deals with Floyd.
Let's withhold judgment until we find out how Hoke deals with Kelly . . .
I am eagerly anticipating this. In the meantime, I suppose people in glass houses shouldn't throw stonums.
Wait to see how Hoke deals with this situation if it's his best player, not a mediocre WR that can easily be replaced by any of the other 4-5 mediocre WR's on the roster.
Let's not even compare the two situations until Floyd gets his second DUI and adds a prbation violation to his record. Honestly...if what I have read about Floyd's exploits are correct (2 underage drinking charges and a DUI) they aren't all that comparable to 2 DUI's and a probation violation IMHE.
Why would we withhold judgement until we see how our coach handles a similar situation??
Wouldn't it be more honest and consistent to call this situation like we see it and do the same when Hoke handles Stonum? I mean, will your feelings about how ND is handling this really be changed when you find out how UM handles the Stonum situation? Isn't that the worst kind of conditional morality?
Yes, you are 100% correct.
But right now, I'm behind our staff, trust their judgment and will support their decision. And yes - these two thoughts don't seem to be remotely consistent. Welcome to CFB.
I think the original comment was more harmless than that. There's a difference between saying "whatever Hoke does is the right thing (even if he did nothing)" and saying "maybe we shouldn't bash ND until we know it won't come back to haunt us."
It's funny how people like to throw stones at Kelly for this when we have a similar situation on our hands right now that has yet to be resolved. I am going to wait to pass judgement on what Kelly does with Floyd until the Stonum issue decided.
then Stonum will be playing next year. Stonum has 2 DUI's, but Floyd now leads with 3.
IMO ... a second chance is all anyone should get, which doesn't help Stonum, but the Floyd situation is very tressel / dantonio like. It's called win no matter what ...
Go Blue !
Floyd got one DUI following 2 minor in possession tickets. It's bad enough, but nothing like 3 DUIs.
Get your facts straight. He has one....ONE DUI. If that doesn't fit your desire to try to make him look bad then just keep making up the story as you go. If you think Floyd should be off the team entirely there is no way you could ever argue that Stonum should still be a member of our team. He has 2 DUI's and a probation violation. You better climb down of that high horse before you fall off and hurt yourself.
That no one deserves more than 1 second chance. If it were up to me, neither would play in 2011.
From ESPN:
"There was real concern that Floyd could be expelled or suspended for the fall semester after his March 21 DUI arrest, his third alcohol-related offense since 2009."
also this week .... "Suspended Notre Dame star wide receiver Michael Floyd hopes to have a plea deal in place by the end of June on a misdemeanor drunken driving arrest, his attorney said Tuesday."
Ah, the wheels of justice in motion at nd .... Returning to Glory ... part 18
Go Blue !
Thank you, just came to post this.
We've already had one "Kelly = Dantonio" post. What are you going to say if Coach Hoke allows Stonum to stay on the team?
Tweet after...
@schadjoe Since some think I stated Floyd is reinstated to team, it's only for tm workouts... For now 16 minutes ago
How else was he supposed to be in gametime condition by Sept 10? Can't practice out'n'ups picking up trash on the side of the road wearing an orange vest
Schad is a horrible journalist.
Supposedly he has admitted he is an alcoholic an is in a supervised living situation with required curfews and people to oversee him. This is not the same as some kid living in a condo with done other guys who parties too much. This is a way of ND saying "ok, good so far, we are allowing you to be a normal student, but you still have all summer, dont screw up.". I don't have a problem with this.
And I think I can convince myself of this. You've got a guy that clearly has a drinking problem and you have two choices:
a) Isolate him from his teammates to punish him, make sure he's going to treatment, and getting better.
b) Make certain he is staying busy, he is competing and staying fit, make sure he's going to treatment, and getting better.
I think choice B is more likely to lead to success, unless it was the football that was leading to the drinking. Don't know nearly enough about the case, but maybe this is the best thing for him, in which case I'm all for it.
