The return of Antonio Kinard...
April 18th, 2011 at 12:52 AM ^
Posted before I meant to.
I am expecting attrition of between 4-6 players after finals. That is still a really good number for any coaching transition.
Are we to assume * means redshirt? Because Jeremy Jackson did not redshirt. Also if Chris Bryant plays this coming year as you suggest, he will not have redshirted. I wouldn't count Kovacs and Floyd as not having scholarships for their 5th years. They will be among our most experienced players. Although I agree there will probably be more attrition before signing day next year to open up more spots, for now I am only counting scholarships we know will be open for next year's class (16 total, 4 of which are taken by public commits as you mention).
My scholarship allotment would look similar to yours, but since I am not counting on the extra 2 scholarships you are, I would remove a running back from this class (we have 7 returning for 2012!) and one from DL. Assuming Paskorz is DL and not LB, we have 11 returning next year, but I do agree that we should try to take 3 this year, probably Wormley, Day and Godin, although I wouldn't turn away Spence or O'Brien.
almost no chance that Floyd and Kovacs aren't back in 2012. Even if they eventually get beat out for starting positions in 2011or 2012 (which isn't a given), they'll be among the top back ups and would still see plenty of time.
The depth chart at offensive line after this season is absolutely terrifying. What the F was RR thinking? That all you need is slot receievers and your good to go. His impact on this team will continue to be felt for a few more years. We are going to get stomped by Alabama with an offensive line like that!
and lost Fisher because he was fired. That means there would have been a minimum of four last year. Hoke didn't recruit any. He just secured those that were already coming. We lose one starting O lineman after this year. We'll have 4/5 of our current OLine back for Alabama and you consider it a bad thing?

Michigan welcomed only one new offensive lineman in the fall of 2010, Christian Pace, when they needed at least four. That, more than anything, is the reason for the current depth woes along the offensive line. Hoke did a good job, given the hand he was dealt. The fact that there was only one guy in the previous class is not on him.
Michigan will probably have back 3 out of 5 offensive line starters in 2012, losing Molk and Huyge. That fact isn’t particularly worrisome. What is, is that the roster backing them up will be awfully thin.
i feel pretty confident with lewan, schofield, khoury, and omameh. not sure who the 5th guy will be

i would guess barnum, making the line: (from left to right)
lewan, barnum, khoury, omameh, scofield
barnum has gotten some positive reviews over the springl. to me this looks like a very solid line.
the following yr we lose the three interior lineman (barnum, khoury, omameh), which is when thinks will get iffy. excluding current commits for the 2012 class, the only other interior lineman currently on the roster are bryant, pace, and miller.
freshmen, I believe. Not that it's critical to the numbers here.
Is a fr I thought?
<br>(can't access depth chart from iPhone)
That's the OP's way of saying they're not going to redshirt
Isn't Denard a JR and a member of the class of 2013?
EDIT: Maybe I just don't get it. Lots of people seem off a year. When you say "C/O" I think you mean "Class Of" meaning the year they will graduate. Do you mean that is the year they will play their last season? To me, it is confusing.
Football year =/= school year.
Denard has finished his Sophomore year of eligibility as a football player in the "football" year which just ended (2010) but the school year will end in 2011. Next season he will be a Junior in (football year) 2011 and a Senior in (football year) 2012. However, the 2012 "football" season will be a part of the 2012/2013 school year and he will graduate from UM as a student in 2013.
He is a member of the 2012 class as an athlete(football year) and 2013 class as a student (school year). Confusing?

Thanks. OK, so next question: OP says 67 scholarships, but I count 69 on the table.
*NOW* what am I missing?
April 18th, 2011 at 11:41 AM ^
I believe the OP feels that a couple players on the board won't get a 5th year. It's possible but I don't agree with discounting them before they've even completed their junior season. In reality, there are 16 spots currently available with 4 commits.
Not disagreeing -- I think you have to count 16 now. I imagine the coaches are planning around 19 for the class, but not because they plan to cut a certain number of 5th-years loose. Just that there is attrition every year, one way or another, in every program.
That said, there isn't a lot of reason for a 5th year to hang around if he's [1] not likely to play, and [2] is ready to graduate. I take Hoke at his word that, for him, football is about the players -- part of that is pushing the little birds out of the nest when it's time to fly.
He means the year of their last season, which follows Tim/Brian's practice in the official MGo depth chart by class. He's making guesses about who will redshirt this year, but otherwise I think it's mostly accurate.
Is Hawthorne applying for a medical redshirt for his freshman year? Because otherwise he should not be listed as a redshirt -- he played in the first four games of 2009. Regardless, he'll be either a senior or a redshirt junior in 2012, not a sophomore.
Weirdly, the OP seems to have used an old version of the depth chart, since it has the old "C. Hagerup" error, which has since been corrected.
MGoBlue.com lists Brandin Hawthorne as a true Junior for the 2011 season. Can anyone confirm whether BH will be a true Junior or a RS Soph in 2011?
He played early in the 2009 season, so he definitely does not qualify for a regular redshirt.
So he's either a true Junior in 2011 or he's in the same boat as Gardner (who is a year behind him). That is, the NCAA won't rule on a medical redshirt for his 2009 season until after he exhausts his regular eligibility, if he still wants it at that point. I think they have started doing it that way to avoid spending resources to make decisions that turn out not to matter.
I believe TRob is the player in the 2012 class least likely to be brought back for a 5th year. He rarely played under RR, who LOVED slots, and it is hard to imagine him seeing the field much in 2011 under Hoke.
It's possible that he might just transfer after this school year ends but he would have to go to an FCS program to avoid sitting out another year. If he transferred to another FBS program he would only have one year of eligibility left. I think he'll stay at UM, finish his degree next year and then leave (or be asked to leave) the team after the 2011 season.
Holy crap we need more talent at WR
Anyone else notice we're going to have several names under the "senior" column?
That's kinda weird, no?

im not so sure that chris barnett is heading for a red shirt. He is very skilled and considerring the depth at TE....
holy pantz - we need OTs & DTs!

Heitzman was brought in as a TE, no?
Nope, DE.
