Marty Turco bets with Habs fan during game
"I bet him after the Canadiens scored that Chicago wouldn't score again," the caller said.
"When they scored ... I gave him five bucks," the caller said. "I slipped it through the glass. He took it with no questions whatsoever. I wrote on the $5 bill with a Sharpie, 'Habs rule.' "
"I went triple or nothing after the second period, nobody scored. Into the overtime, I went, 'Marty, I'll give you 5-to-1 the Canadiens win the game.' He took the bet. When the Canadiens scored in overtime, he handed me back a wad of $5 bills. And inside ... was the $5 bill that I gave him that he crossed out 'Habs rule,' and wrote 'Turco rules.' "

I found this pretty funny.
I also found this humorous, but I'm guessing Gary Bettman is going to disagree with me.
Gary Bettman hates fun. Also, water is wet.
...but not as much as most hockey fans hate him.
Commissioners in general are pretty bad. It's bordering on pathetic that the only commissioner of a major sport with any degree of competence is the consummate reptile, David Stern. That isn't saying I agree with much of what he does, but I do respect his ability to slither out of any situation intact.
Gary Bettman (ironic name, huh?) will probably freak out.
BTW, I love that the Canadian $5 bill depicts people playing hockey.
I mean, I love America and all, but you can't deny the fact that, in general, Canada is a pretty righteous place.
I'll take a Canadian Maple donut with that Iced Cap, eh? Pass the Alexander Keith's.
this can not be allowed ... he could be in that game any second .... just awful
I see where you're coming from, but he bet $5 on his own side to win. It's not like he'd have a conflict of interest if he went in the game. It's definitely not allowed by the NHL, but I hope it will be a minor penalty -- har -- given the circumstances.
Says Pete Rose...
As a former backup goalie, I find this hilarious....I used to send the student manager of our team to go get pizza for me while I sat in the box. Yet another reason why Turco is awesome.
Props to Marty for remembering to add the "s" after "rule." Clearly an M grad.
have been a "Z"
a zed?
"We are following up to understand the circumstances, but no, I would not term it a formal investigation," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said.
Hilarious, and looks like the NHL hopefully won't make a big deal out of it.
Can buy you one of these...
Wait, they bet 5 bucks Canadia(e)n? Isn't that lke 30 cents or something American? Couldn't they have bet something more tangible?
/s
Try $0.95
I know this is sarcasm, but I was shocked to find out that Canadian and American dollars are basically interchangeable.
I used to go to Canada all the time to get hockey equipment for cheap, and now...not so much. Its a bummer.
The NHL cannot penalize Turco for betting monopoly money.
This rules on so many levels.
This is awesome, just shows that athletes are real people and like to have a good *safe* time (read: not strippers, blow, fast cars), but sadly Turco will get fined ohh about 10-20k for this.
Maybe he can get banned for life Pete Rose style. Because clearly the NHL disciplinary people don't understand the difference between seriously problematic hits and harmless ones. Probably the same with betting.
Awesome. Pure awesome. Turco is the man.
Thats a great story.
Thats a great story.
Thats a great story.
Triple post!
triple post! Heck, i'm not even mad; thats amazing
Habs fans have a running bet (err...) that he will be punished more than Chara for hitting Patches (not so hard...).
It was hilarious, and a great little piece of what was a great event last night! O-6, can't beat it.
Turco rocks.
And funny, I love it. Turco, is a fans goalie there.
