nice tat

unfortunatily for me there doesn't seem to be a good option for reworking my Hoke tat to look more like Harbaugh (although changing it from the orignial Rich Rod to Hoke was painless enough at the time)

I agree. When is the press conference? I agree. When is the press conference?
Oh come on. Fuck this game. Oh come on. Fuck this game. There's nothing to learn from it that we don't all already know. There's definitely no sense in spending thanksgiving combing over it wit a fine tooth comb

Yeah but basically looking Yeah but basically looking clueless all season while secretly saving counter plays for osu, not bringing them out the during say Iowa or Nebraska - that's a horse of a different color.
"We emptied the drawer." In "We emptied the drawer." In other words, they finally ran all of those counters to the things they'd been doing all year. Implies that Borges did, in fact, use the entire season to set up the osu game...
That's true but the fact is I That's true but the fact is I can count the number of times michigan has been fun to watch this year on my index finger. I think that's why people were feeling so down about prospects for the game. The biggest surprise is that it turned put to be a great game, and I'm glad for that!

re: no real difference in the general behavior of the fan bases

every year when the game is in ohio, the U sends an email around the student body with bullet points about how to be stay safe in columbus, which reads like a State Department travel advisory for US citizens traveling in, say, Mogadishu - don't draw attention to yourself, be inconspicuous, avoid having Michigan stickers or flags on your car, etc. Do they send something like that around to students at ohio when the game is in Ann Arbor?

If there is a silver lining If there is a silver lining to the season, this discussion of what it means to be a fan is interesting. Michigan had such a tradition of winning for so long that we never really had to think about it. I don't live in Ann Arbor anymore but grew up going to the games and always was there on Saturdays when I was a student. This is my dad's 40th year as a season ticket holder, and right now you can buy his ticket to The Game on stubhub. I think the relation of a fan to a team is complex, and the relationship of Michigan fans to Michigan football is in some ways unique in the world of college football, or even in the world of sports. Try to reduce what is going on in the hearts of fans right now to simple terms like "fair weather" and you will fail to understand it. It isn't simple black or white. That is the world we live in.

+1

How do I +1 this? because it needs to be +1'd

would be great to see the CC games become incorporated in championship ... system. That would be a great step away from the current popularity contest that BCS rankings are. It's the subjective "black box" nature of BCS rankings that makes it so obnoxious. Even a "plus one" thing would just be skirting the issue - you have some cabal selecting 4 rather than 2 teams. A little better, but still falls short.

woohoo!

ground-aided catches and parallel universes

That Coale non-catch immediately reminded me of the Hemingway Iowa game deal, too. Problem is, if Coale made the catch, Hemingway definitely made the catch. in which case, we'd have beaten Iowa, played for the B10 championship, and Hokie fans would have spent today reeling from an encounter with MI state and Dantonio's twerpiness, and we'd still be down from losing to Wisconsin in the championship game and ending up with a dumb bowl bid, and going on about those seniors who went through so much and came so close... which I am sure is exactly how the whole thing played out in a parallel universe that sucks

I blame ohio

I blame ohio

yeah, it would have to be one or the other

I get the reasoning for having two formats and using the one that fits best in a given year. But the overall idea (the Brian+ plan, etc) is a really good one that it would be great to see get into the national discussion, and just seems like that point about switching between 2 or 6 is a sticking point that people won't see past. Instead of "that well-thought-out playoff plan that would be best for IDing the best team from year to year" people will see it as, "that crazy idea where a committee chooses a different scheme each year" and they won't get past that.

last temptation of joepa

This whole mess has sort of been weighing heavy on my soul all day and 6-0's post was good catharsis.

Thinking about that, I bet denial plays a big role in all of this. These kinds of cover ups can happen not just becuase people think that they are above the law or because they don't care. There's also an element of people being able to convince themselves that it's not happening.

Especially with institutions that stand as symbols of integrety in people's minds (be it a highly respected sports program, religious institution, etc.) witnissing something like that must create so much "cognative dissonance" between what someone believes and what they're seeing, or hearing about, that some people can doubt that they actually saw it.

This isn't to excuse anyone who knew things and didn't act (enough).  But it seems too easy and simplistic just to label everyone involved as evil monsters who should have known better, (which of course they should have) fire them and say, "Justice is done now let's more on"  That misses the point.

This is high profile, but it's not a unique example of  letting someting like this get brushed under the rug - out of sight out of mind. Fact is it might happen more easily than we'd like to think.  And the most revered instutions may be, because of that reverence, under the greatest pressure to cover it up; fall into denial and "hope it just goes away." The temptation to tell themselves, "this isn't happening" and believe it, in order to continue being a symbol of honor and integrety in the eyes of the world.

When things like this happens they create a sense of "this could happen anywhere" or "nothing is sacred" that really shakes up a lot of people. I think that adds another layer to something that is already so disturbing.

Hasn't this

been a hallmark of the RR years in general -- on both sides of the ball -- insisting on a scheme rather than adapting based on players' abilities... the scheme the scheme the scheme

Greg Robinson

I'd like to see G. Robinson take a few questions in a press conference.  It would be nice to get a sense of what he's thinking, in general...  Might even by good for his image if he could come out and gave some clear, level-headed answers about what's going on with the defense.

Special Teams, Special Teams, Special Teams.

It was nice to see 3rd stringers holding their own on the O, and the D bringing some pressure, but  "with so many games near toss-up..." it would have been nice to see someone in a Michigan jersey (Robinson?) try for and successfully kick a field goal on Sat.!  Too bad the opportunity didn't come up.   So far we've been able to laugh it off the miserable place kicking, but it beings an element of russian roulette to every game, and heading into the Big10 season I can't help feeling that it's only a matter of time before it costs us a game -- and it better not be the OSU game!
