Can we get this added to UM diplomas?

Interesting take on the…

Interesting take on the impact of Harbaugh kicking the tires on the NFL, and can certainly see the points being made. However, to the best of my knowledge, he's been a straight shooter his entire life, and if he says he's put the NFL dream to bed then I think that can be used as a recruiting tool to UM's advantage: Checked it out, didn't like what he saw, committed to UM for the rest of his career.

0-15 from the floor in 56 combined minutes for two starters and still got the W.

Wasn't mentioned in the recap, but I thought Bufkin's 3 was one of the biggest, if not the biggest, shot of the game. Recall reading he's worked on his shot's release form by watching Eli. The ball looks good coming off his hand, he's been a nice spark off the bench the latter quarter of the season. I think this team is a consistent ~15ppg bench performance away from being a really tough out in the tournament.

This also falls in the difficult to quantify bin, but it seems like the team is playing with better on court emotion and leadership. Have remarked a number of times how emotionless DeVante has seemed this season, and the past few games he appears more engaged and enthusiastic - talking on D, letting out a scream after tough baskets or good plays. Same with Dickinson to some degree. Team seems like their chemistry and communication is better overall. Maybe guys finding their roles and settling in?

Excluding Maryland, I've been to every B10 stadium at least twice to see UM play and can say, without question, MSU is consistently the worst environment. The last time I went (-57 rushing yards game), my group had a full glass beer bottle thrown at us from a pickup truck while walking down the road from the cornfield parking lots to the stadium. Pickup came from behind and was going fast, I'd guess at least 50mph. Not sure how much damage a full glass bottle would do, but can make the case that would seriously injure someone if not kill them. Simply walking down the road wearing UM gear with no one else around...

As Rabbit21 calmly and…

As Rabbit21 calmly and patiently pointed out: The phrase "champions of the West" is often misunderstood; it is a reference to Michigan's membership in the Western Conference, later renamed the Big Ten. After Michigan temporarily withdrew from the Western Conference in 1907, a new Michigan fight song "Varsity" was written in 1911 because the line "champions of the West" was no longer relevant.

I live outside of Detroit…

I live outside of Detroit and have three framed signed jerseys (Brady, Woodson, Howard) that were professionally done. Cost ~$300 per frame. Mine are not exposed to sunlight, so went the non-UV route. There's definitely skill involved, the framer has each jersey positioned identically so the margins are the same in each frame, there are no wrinkles/creases in the jerseys, and the tacks used to hold the jersey in place are not visible. Given what your jerseys are worth, I'd suck it up and pay to have it done professionally and know it's right.

Wonder if Juwan's and Howard…

Wonder if Juwan's and Howard's NBA experience is an advantage in this matchup given how much ISO the league runs? Hopefully bodes favorably for us tonight.

Terrance Williams comes to mind as guy with potential Livers-like upside, albeit perhaps not to the NBA level unless his jumper improves, that could stick around the full four.

Hunter's game reminds me somewhat of Arvydas Sabonis. Skilled passer, can score from different levels, good FT shooter.

Kobe shot free throws and walked off under his own power after tearing his Achilles. Unfortunately, don't think you can draw a concrete conclusion based on not being carted off.

Thanks, this is the closest anyone has to come to actually answering my question. Could sum up as: Does not seem to be as prevalent as initially feared, but could be a potential side effect for a small percentage of infected.

Not that it would happen,…

Not that it would happen, but "Special Assistant Shooting Consultant John Beilein" would be such an incredible addition to the UM staff for a guy like Collins. We can dream...

In our case, you'd have to…

In our case, you'd have to think that the coaches would be very happy to work both Mayfield and Thomas back into the rotation.

Really depends who you ask…

Really depends who you ask/believe. JNJ has indicated the ability to produce >1B doses in 2021 (should they successfully develop a vaccine). However, how many people that treats is dependent on how long immunity from the vaccine lasts. Most of the non-fatal coronaviruses (i.e. common colds) have antibodies that last ~6mo. SARS1 and MERS antibodies were detected in humans >2yrs post-infection, but it is not clear if in sufficient amounts to block a re-infection. If immunity = 6mo, then would likely require bi-annual vaccination. There's also some thought that a person's initial covid infection would be the most severe, if true, some may opt to forego a vaccine, particularly if it is hastily brought to market.

Others are more skeptical of the timeline, saying 18-24 months at minimum, but likely to be longer. Others point to prior vaccines for novel diseases that took 5-10yrs to produce.

Personally, given we have corona vaccines for animals and were previously working on them for SARS1/MERS, I'd hope the timeline is closer to what JNJ says vs. the others. There's at least some foundational building blocks to work off of and coronas are fairly simple with low mutagenic properties. Fingers crossed.

Through my job, have been…

Through my job, have been fortunate enough to listen to >50 conference calls with some of the world's leading epidemiologists, virologists, infectious disease researchers, ER physicians and hospital administrators. The last call I was on today was with Paul Franks, adjunct professor at Harvard and Depty at Lund University in Sweden. He is currently leading a major project on the national covid data collection initiative in Sweden. A few of my notes from the call (the Qs are posed by the call's host, not me):

  • Has Sweden's strategy been successful or not?

    • 30 deaths per 100K citizens ranks 9th in the world, multiples higher than other Nordic countries

    • If you can't maintain lock down until treatment/vaccine, then entire country ends up being infected anyway and the deaths per 100K of other countries will likely catch up to Sweden's

  • Swedish infection fatality rate of 3.6% similar to Iceland, Boston, Germany

    • Lack of adequate protection of most at risk populations in Sweden has contributed to death rate

    • Can keep mortality rates lower with better protection of at risk cohorts

      • Hospitals, nursing homes, immigrant groups

  • If you were to visit Sweden you wouldn't notice any difference this year vs. last year

    • Not a lot of social distancing going on

    • However, telecom mobility data over Easter showed a large reduction in movement (90%, suggesting self isolating)

  • Outside of Stockholm/metro regions, population density is low

    • Even in the metro regions, many live alone, very few multi-generational homes (city density vs. home density, unlike Queens/Bronx/London)

  • Herd immunity is widely believed to be ~60%

    • Stockholm could be approaching herd immunity

  • Do you think there's a scenario by which we don't need a vaccine (given herd immunity)?

    • Vaccine will probably only be used for the most vulnerable, at least initially, but given likelihood of antibody length, would expect a vaccine to be necessary

Of the calls I've listened to there is a constant: It is virtually impossible to cross compare infected populations due to the myriad of variables that influence mortality/outcomes (age, race, gender, air quality, medical facilities, treatment protocol, ventilator usage, co-morbidities, testing/detection, population density and many others).

Asking if any country made the right choice really hinges on whether the answer relates to preserving the medical system, minimizing current mortality, blunting the impact on an economy (or some other variable) and what you believe to be the final outcome (vaccine/treatment vs. herd immunity vs. XYZ occurring) of the pandemic.

I don't think there are any simple answers. For instance, as it relates to Sweden, if the other Nordic countries end up being on par with Swedish mortality, then they've all ended up in the same place despite taking different routes to get there.

I know Brian has made this argument before, but hopefully over the table compensation (name & likeness etc.) levels the playing field.

Frustrating UM chooses to follow the letter of the NCAA's law despite the NCAA (and FBI for that matter) clearly not caring about, or rewarding, those who do so.

Simpson held Winston to 1-6 shooting from deep last year. Of his 37 attempts against Top 50 opponents, 11 came against Cuse and he made 3 (27%). Between Simpson and Cuse, he combined to go 4-17 (23.5%). Guessing those were two of the better, if not the two best, defenses he faced last year.

What To Do

Harry's Chocolate Shop is the Purdue version of the Jug/Charlies, worth hitting up if you don't mind the crowd.

Visitor's section was located directly under the scoreboard in the endzone, which conveniently houses roughly 1,000 speakers that will shatter your eardrums and magnify any hangover.

McGraw's Steakhouse is pricey, but the nicest restaurant in the area. Some of the hotels run free shuttles to it.

Having been to every B10 away game location, PUR is near the bottom in terms of overall atmophere IMO.

Assistant Coaches and Succession

Beilein will be 68 at the end of the extension.

Jordan will be 42, Bacari will be 45.

If we can hold on to both coaches - and I believe Bacari has said publicly he would remain an assistant under Lavall - that should set up nicely for the future. Two young coaches with over a decade of tutelage under Beilein, what more could we ask for?

Jabrill Punt Return

Any chance we can get a gif of the MIN player (#11?) getting blown up shortly after Jabrill breaks down the sideline?

Re: Norfleet not listed on roster. Teams can't have more than 105 players in fall camp. If he has to earn his way back, absence makes sense.

Timeline?

Commencement was May 2nd and he's been suspended - supposedly - for 3 weeks. UM would have had to implement the suspension almost immediately (assuming exmas are a week or two before school ends). That timeline is really tight, but not impossible I suppose. But, it makes me wonder if there was something else going on? Also, a senior with no previously disclosed academic or disciplinary issues skipping exams just seems odd.

Progress

This game felt a lot like last year's AZ game. Cuse had a tough inside presence, good defense around the perimeter, and kept it close the entire game. Of course, unlike last year, we did enough to win (despite the bricked FTs), and I think that bodes favorably for the future, particularly with a young team.

It's fun to watch Doyle and Chatman improve with each game. Aside from the crowd pleasing alley-oops, I don't feel like we miss GR3's production much and Chatman's ceiling seems like it may be higher overall. Doyle also seems further along than Mitch was at this point (and age). Interestingly, despite losing 3 players to the NBA, this could end up being a more formidable team by March than last year's was.

We've been calling him The We've been calling him The Legend of Ricky Doyle, or simply Ricky Bobby.
Buyout

Curious if knowingly violating the FOIA policy would be grounds for justifyable termination? Obviously a win for the university to avoid a costly buyout...
