Wright State 5th Year Transfer Julius Mays (6'2 guard) lists interest in Michigan

"Julius Mays, a 6-foot-2 guard at Wright State who averaged 14.1 points this past season, announced he’ll go elsewhere and be able to play immediately for his final campaign.
Mays told CBSSports.com that his initial list consists of Purdue, Michigan State, Kentucky, Cincinnati and possibly Michigan."
come on down
Have an open spot that's not going anywhere- and won't take up space in later classes. Could use another guard- not sure this has any real downside- but don't know much more about him. Are there any other 5th year guys with UM interest?
That list is beginning to dwindle. Marshall Wood of VaTech announced last night that he has decided not to transfer.
Mixed emotions on this possibility. I'd love to have an experienced back up for Trey, which will be severly lacking next season. However, I'd also like to see Spike get more reps behind Trey so that he's a much better prepared to be a reliable back up to Walton for the 2013/14 season.
And I apologize for the disgusting amount of implied assumptions I just made there. Regardless, I guess I'm an instant gratification kinda guy, so I say what the hell, let's get 'em!
We ain't rebuilding we are trying to win now. If Mays can help next season bring him aboard. Next season is M's best chance at a deep tourney run in a long long time. Go for it.
Spike will always be a back-up. Not sure it matters too much if it improves our chances next year. He'll get practice experience against top players- yeah game experience matters- but not sure it matters enough for Spike to lose some (or all) next year if it means a better chance at Final Four just so we have a very marginally better prepared back up for the next three years.
It's tough to say that Spike will "always be a back-up." You never know what can happen. He might either have to play due to injuries, or he might eventually crack the starting lineup over time as an upperclassman.
I just don't ever like hearing things like "always be a back-up," especially before the kid even makes it to campus. Besides, you never know how long Walton will stay. He may be an early-entry as well, and we definitely don't know who our future PG options will be after him.
He was the lone good thing on Wright State.
He averaged 14.1 points per game on 42 percent fg shooting with 42 percent from 3.
For some reason I thought you were talking about football and got all excited for added OL depth.

Appears to be prone to coughing it up on occasion but he sure can shoot the rock. Come on down big guy.
At least he didn't play for Wrong St. That wouldn't be Wright.
If we were to actually sign a player named Wright as well as an almost identical player named Wong, then horrendous TV announcers could no longer be held criminally responsible for their acts. They would be unable to distinguish Wright from Wong.
Dylan at UMHoops saying he's hearing we're in good position with LeVert, who is on campus this weekend.
"I'm hearing that Purdue is in a great position for Mays though.
On the other hand, Michigan is in a great position for LeVert who is on campus this afternoon."

Absolutely no doubt that a player like this would provide a significant upgrade to the team - at backup PG and also probably playing some off-guard beside Burke. Albrecht can red-shirt and isn't on the same level talent-wise or experience-wise.
HOWEVER, I don't think he's coming to Michigan given that Burke will be ahead of him. He'll probably have better opportunities elsewhere.
I'm not a big fan of the rent-a-senior rule, but I guess if our conference rivals are going to profit from it, we may as well, too.
Tremendous! Pick the Maize and Blue.
If we took Lavert, would we have room?
Michigan has room for two more guys next year, though there is currently no room for any new player(s) in 2013 unless someone goes pro (as they presumably will).
As a Wright State alum and a lifelong Michigan fan, I'd be happy to see an ex-WSU player to go to Michigan. He is finishing up school and can transfer without sitting out, so could provide some depth off the bench. He's also considering going pro in Europe, but am hoping for a transfer to Michigan. I don't blame him for leaving Wright State, they are a very young team that I don't see being tops in the Horizon League next year (even though Butler is leaving).
I've had the pleasure of watching this guy play, even snuck out of the student section and found empty courtside seats for WSU's win OT over Idaho (He had TWO buzzer beaters in that game). He's not a world beater type player, but he's very good. Would be an incredible pickup
He's a pretty good player, but I don't know how much PT he would get for UM. I watched him play his senior year at Marion High School, when Marion played Gordon Hayward's Brownsburg team in the Indiana Class 4A State Championship. He had a good game, but was pretty clearly a step down from Gordon and Scott Wood (now at NC State). I think he could help UM in terms of depth, but I don't know how much of an impact he would truly have. Just my $.02.
Not sure if Mays would want to spend his 5th year as Burke's backup. Meanwhile, according to the article linked below in UM Hoops last week we look very strong with Caris Levert and a commitment could come very soon after today's visit. Either or both would be great pick ups.

I had never heard of Julius Mays before today. He started out his college career with the NC State Wolfpack, played two seasons with them before transferring to Wright State. Definitely a talented kid and could help M out at both guard spots. Will be interesting to see how vigorous Beilein is in pursuit of Mays.
