What happened to the Wrestling team this year?

Submitted by BlueWolverine02 on March 9th, 2020 at 3:50 PM

I only follow wrestling peripherally,  but I know some here follow it more closely.  We just closed out the Big Ten season and it seems like outside of Paris, it was a pretty disappointing season.  Haven't we been recruiting pretty well? Did we have guys injured? Just not developing?  I don't expect to be at PSU level, but I think we finished 8th this year.  Any insight?

I will let the experts provide more details but, I do know that some guys took a redshirt year to train for Olympic trials.

Also, you need to keep in mind that 8th in the Big Ten is still top 15 in the country.

I think Michigan had a disproportionate share of Olympic potential wrestlers who compete internationally for European countries (Amine, Micic).  Travel considerations are a lot more difficult for them vs. American citizens (there still are classes to attend).

Kyle Snyder back in 2016 won the US Olympic trials in April, while still wrestling for Ohio State from January to March.

We had at least 4 wrestlers red shirt this season 3 for the Olympics those 3 were all Americans so we wrestled with guys that would not of seen much if any mat time this year.

Myles Amine (174), Logan Massa (165), Stevan Micic (133) and Kanen Storr (141/149) started off the year on olympic redshirts. Storr came out of his redshirt halfway through the year, but the other three get another year of eligibility - basically a 6th year to compete.

The advantage to this for Amine is that Mark Hall from Penn State and a bunch of other really good seniors at 174 will be gone...although I saw a comment somewhere that Amine might bump up to 184 next year. For Massa, too, Vincenzo Joseph from Penn State will be gone at 165 next year.

For 2020/2021, the lineup should be something like this:

125: Medley (4th at BTT)/McHenry (coming off redshirt)

133: Silva (8th at BTT)/Micic

141: Silva/Micic/Drew Mattin/Cole Mattin

149: Storr (5th at BTT)

157: Lewan (5th at BTT)

165: Massa/Cam Amine (coming off redshirt)

174: Massa/Cam Amine/Myles Amine

184: Myles Amine/Embree

195: ???...maybe Gaige Garcia

HWT: Parris

Parris, Micic, Myles Amine can all challenge for championships/top 3 at worst at the NCAA's. Massa, Lewan, Storr are a step below them, and then the others in the running all have potential to do well but might need some more improvement or things to break their way in order to do well at the NCAA championships (top 10). But the team overall should be one of the deepest in the Big Ten and the country and should rival Iowa, PSU, OSU for the top spot overall.

I follow UM Wrestling religiously. Hard to know exactly what is going on because not a lot is posted for public consumption. Not even the wrestle off information was posted this year when in years past they were. So what do we know. Pretty much all the above and what's in this thread is accurate.

One point of clarification, Michigan ended up 7th, not 8th, and the BTT. They had a bad day 2. More losses than wins. There were in 6th for the longest time, but the lack of wins let NW slide by them.

125 - McHenry redshirted. Former junior world champ. Dude is a stud and quick. But he's very small. On interviews he said they have him eating like crazy to try and bulk him up. Will he be ready next year?

125 - Medley was a stud this year. Never a state champ in HS, but he has a motor and he out-placed his seed at the BTT.  IMO, if he keeps doing what he is doing, there's a chance he could place at NCAA in the 5-8 range. Will have to be a little better on his feet and get a TD against a higher seed to do it though. But Conor Youtsey did just that twice a few years back. Lack of a TD cost him in the 3/4 match at BTT against NW where he was ridin' out in TB2.

133 - Micic will be a a top 5 pick next year and a threat to win it all. But pretty much only Gross is gone.  Suriano, Fix, DeSanto, RBY will all be back. Them are some studs. That is if he wrestles next year. Threw this out on another thread, this would be his 7th year in college!! He's had 1 RS and 2 Olympic RS seasons to go with 3 AA finishes. Could be he's done? If he wrestles, it's at 133 because his international weight is less than 133. So I don't expect him to move up.

133 - Silva. Looked really really good. I don't believe he was hurt. Again no info, but in an interview, Bormet said he hadn't wrestled because he was getting his school work in order. Then he gets only 4 home matches. They didn't take him on the road. I think this was a disservice and ended up costing him an automatic bid to the NCAA. If he wrestling 15 or so match, his record would have been good enough that the NCAA made 133 have 8 allocations, not 7. And he was taken down at the last second of the third to get beat placing 8th. Doubtful he gets an at-large bid going 6-3 on the year even though he gave Gross everything he wanted. I hated the match against Illinois. Travis used his length to his advantage. If Silva wrestles at the away meet against Travis then with the experience I think leads to a victory for Silva at the BTT. So I think Bormet really screwed this one up.

141 -  Drew Mattin redshirted. Not sure why but he did after jumping 2 weight classes. In open tournaments, he didn't do great. So maybe he needs to grow into the new weight.

141 - Cole Mattin - Did a solid job this year. Be interesting to see which brother wins next year or if Cole just takes a RS.

149. Storr will be a Senior. He has the talent to be an AA. Hope he can get it done this year and next.

157 - Lewan - Another former Jr World Champ. You can see how good he is but I hate the way he wrestles. There's no urgency and rarely does he go for TDs until the 3rd period. Goes to OT way too often. It cost him in the consi-semis when he gave up a TD in the last 10 seconds to a person he previously beat. Needs to become a full 7 minute wrestler. Was ranked #8 in the country but I don't see him placing this year at NCAAs based on how he wrestles.

165/174 - Massa - Was 3rd his freshman year. Then took a redshirt. Then was hurt, came back and lost in the bloodround. And then got beat in consis last year by a past AA 2 matches from AA status. This year olympic redshirt. He did win the US Open this year beating last year's NCAA Champ Mekhi Lewis in the semis. Has the talent to place again or even win the title. Just needs to roll. Lewis, Wick, and Marinelli are all back as well. But Massa has beat them all, but also gotten beat by them all minus Lewis whom he hasn't wrestling in college. Maybe looks a bit bigger, but doesn't mean he doesn't lose the weight to stay 165.

165 - Cam Amine - IMO, I would have let him go this year. Then RS next year when Massa is back. Maybe everyone bumps up a weight? Not sure. But he's very very good. So far undefeated in open tournaments.

174/184 - Myles Amine -  Is an animal. Already qualified for the olympics. Will be a threat to win it all at either weight. I don't see him getting super huge so that tells me he's staying at 174.

184 - Embree - Dude is huge. Not sure what just happened at the BTT. But beat a higher seed. Was going to be in the consi round of 8 and defaulted to 8th place. Will be in NCAAs. But I didn't see him hurt at all in that match. He started the year really well and then was getting beat by a few points every late match. Maybe he is hurt some? I'd get him to do blast doubles like crazy. His size reminds me of Alec Pantaleo whose blast double was sick. Jelani did that to the Minnesota kid the match he won prior to defaulting the rest. Massive blast double. Was a thing of beauty.

197 - Gaige Garcia. If everyone bumps up, then Garcia could RS. There's others on the roster but I guarantee you this is his spot. He's a pinning machine. He just won his second state championship in PA. Along the way he pinned every opponent until State Finals, which he won 7-0. The time on the mat for the other 13 matches was like 1:32. He won OW. Be interesting how he handles football weight vs, staying at 197. Wrestled that in HS.

HWT - Parris. Will be a 3x AA. Hopefully he can beat Gable and crew when it counts.

So there you have it. They wrestled a very young team this year. They knew they were going to get beat on but the young guys performed well. 7th in the Big Ten when 11-12 teams are ranked is nothing to slough about.

Next year they are loaded. If things play out right, they could fight with Iowa for the top spot. But Iowa has like no Seniors and could potentially AA in all 10 weight classes. They are massively good. But there are no given. Their 157 pounder was seeded 3rd this weekend and didn't even place. He'll get an at large bid but crazier things have happened. No?

Also have a multi state champ from Indiana coming in and a few others.

I will say this, not sure what is going on with recruiting but a ton of Michigan wrestlers are leaving the state. Top top guys as well.  Most from DCC but Alex Facundo of Davison whom many consider the #3-4 prospect in the nation just committed to Penn State. We've had multiple DCC guys going to Nebraska. The Amines and others are from DCC so the relationship is there, not sure why Bormet is not closing on these guys. Will hurt Michigan's program for sure. And with their facility, I don't see why these guys don't want to stay home. Makes me shake my head. Maybe its scholarship money? Since these guys only get partials of 9? I don't know but Bormet needs to lock down DCC and other high profile guys to get them to stay home.

As others mentioned - Olympic redshirts are the core issue as regards Michigan's "mediocre" 2020.

(they are still talented, they compete in very deep waters in the B1G).

However - Michigan will be a legit contender for the B1G and National titles in 2021.  U-M could have as many as four individual national title contenders next year.  Micic, Parris, Myles Anime and Massa.

Iowa and PSU will be good as always, but neither is going to be an unstoppable bonus-points scoring machine either (like Iowa for all of the 80s and 90s and PSU for much of the 2010s).

Very young team plus what has already been said, the 3 who took olympic redshirts, Micic, Massa and Amine aren't just random dudes.  They're top 5 wrestlers at weights where we really struggled this year.  Plus, Silva at 133 was injured most of the year and still gave #1 Seth Gross a tough match in the Big Ten tournament.  I think next year's fully weaponized team will be significantly better, with the #3 overall recruit in the country (McHenry) at 125 and the (?7th, ?12th) Amine brother Cam (#19 overall) coming off their usually obligatory freshman redshirt years, plus the previously mentioned olympic guys. Should really be an exciting team. Hope that helps.

Well, went 7-6 this year and still are ranked in the top-25 so that should tell you how strong the B1G is.

As others have mentioned, the Olympic redshirts rendered this season a throwaway season before it even began.

Michigan is the host institution at the NCAA Championships next year which are gonna be in Detroit at LCA so it seems Coach Bormet & co. are putting all of our eggs in that basket and seeing what we can do.

We'll find out next year if it was worth it. Want that elusive B1G Championship, which we haven't achieved since 1973.

I don't really post on this normally.  However, here is a breakdown from someone that follows wrestling extensively.

125: Jack Medley (RS SO) - Came out of nowhere to show significant promise!  Took

            - On the roster - Former #1 Kurt McHenry (FR) recruit in the nation but had/has to grow into                                               the weight class

133: Joey Silva (FR) - Hurt on and off - Placed 7th in the deepest weight class the BIG 10 has                                                     seen in a very long time.

            - On the roster - Stevan Micic - Olympic Redshirt Could be a national Champ next year

141: Cole Mattin (FR) - Placed 9th @ BIG 10s - Being the suprise starter over his brother Drew                                                     Mattin (maybe injured??) and Ben Freeman - Drew was 2-2 at the                                                     NCAA tourney last year 125lbs

149: Kannen Storr (RS JR) - Placed 4th - Possible AA candidate - Will be starter in 2020-21

157: Will Lewan (RS FR) - Placed 4th - Possible AA candidate - Will be starter in 2020-21 - He is a                                                    stud and will only get better - Possible big time AA down the road

165: Tyler Mesinger (RS JR) - Placed 7th after being seeded 12th and qualified for the NCAA                                                              tourney- However, he is at best the 3rd best 165lber on the roster

              - On the Roster - Logan Massa (multiple time AA), Cam Amine - Blue chip recruit (FR) -                                                           Massa will be the starter unless we see a big bump with Massa                                                           going up along with Cam's brother Myles and Jelani up to 197lb.

174: Max Maylor (RS FR) - DNP @ BIG 10S - Really struggled this year at this level

              -  On the Roster - Myles Amine - Will be one of the favorites to win the title next year

184: Jelani Embree (RS SO) - Medical Dft'd to 8th - Very up and down without ever breaking through - has the potential but just hasn't made the next step.  Can he next year?

197: Jackson Striggaw (RS SR) - Placed 7th BIG 10s - Average senior

               - On the Roster - Andrew Davison (RS SO) - Starter for next year Gage Garcia- FR next                                                     year

HWT: Mason Parris - Enough said - Possible Champ for the next 3 years

The team will honestly be fighting for a trophy next year if not higher depending on how individuals come back and improve.

Thanks guys.  Thought it might have been an Olympics issue, but all the elite wrestlers at PSU OSU etc... were all still wrestling.  Sounds like next year we should be back up to what wrestling fans have come to expect from Michigan.

Watch Paris lose to Stevenson was frustrating. Paris was the aggressor but Stevenson has a counter game which is just brutal.  Stevenson pulled a stalling warning and probably should have had one more late but it would not have mattered.

It would be interesting to see if a more patient strategy would work for Paris or if he can improve his offense and overcome Stevenson stall and counter technique.

The Team is going to contend next year.
