UM's Lawyer: Former Head of NCAA Infractions Committee

Submitted by Tha Quiet Storm on

A little tidbit of info from a DetNews article today:

"Michigan's ace-in-the-hole might be [Gene] Marsh, who is a former chairman of the Committee on Infractions. Marsh is responsible for preparing the proposed response, for Coleman's approval."

Not sure if this will make any difference whatsoever in the ultimate outcome, but this sounds like a good guy to have working for you.

An experienced attorney from the other side of the table? I'm willing to bet that it makes a difference. Well done to the person that brought him in for the response.

Former NCAA Lawyer'd.

I'm sure it helps, not only because he knows the rules better than anyone else in the room, but also because he probably knows the key players and knows the kinds of things the NCAA looks for.

Well played, Brandon.  As an attorney myself, I can tell you that in proceedings of this nature (small group of players who all know each other), the most important thing that you can do is bring in an insider.  The importance of having someone who not only knows the rules, but who has credibility with the decision maker cannot be overstated.

This was a topic of conversation a long while back.  IIRC, someone suggested that the idea was to bring in the biggest sonofabitch, OSU lovin', NCAA type to audit things so that everything was beyond reproach.  I'm sure that the NCAA will respect the investigation results.
