Saturday Night Drinking Thread + What's Up with the Tigers?

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

What is in your glass/bottle/keg?   Also, saw my first Tiger game in years today (quick round trip downstate) and everything was perfect....except the Tigers.   They were slow, lethargic, had crap at bats, Sanchez didn't even get an out in the 3 rd inning before they had to yank him, and Miggy looked like he gained 30 lbs and was taking tranquilizers.  Errors on defense, Salt(too many vowels) can hit, but he couldn't throw a runner out in little league and launched one throw into center field.

The Tigers have lost 5 out of the last 6, including two to the Indians at home.  JV pitched well last night but no hitting.

So, please diagnose the Tigers and have an adult beverage.

first, he is the emotional leader of the club, and like i said, they all looked like they went to a 'compassion club' before the game.

second, i noted that he's calling all the pitches during the game and whatever he was dialing up for the indians wasn't working.  it was a hitting slaughter out there.

I live in Florida, and I love a Belgian style witbeir with citrus and corriander called Florida Cracker (yeah, that's where that term started). I'm also going to drink a brown ale infused with key lime, called KeyBilly (this beer is freaking delicious on a hot summer day).

But before the season, I figured (as did so many others) let's see what he can do over the first 1/4th of the season and then act accordingly. After the last half-week I've quickly changed to the "fire him now!" camp, as the Tigers are already looking bored and lifeless. I'm also wondering why Ausmus is still trotting Sanchez out there every 5th day. He's no longer effective as a starter, hasnt been since late 2014---either make him a long reliever or send him to Toledo to figure it out.

Agreed he's not really the problem -- they're just not that good. Still have bullpen issues and the starters have taken a serious step back vs. a few years ago. But I am also convinced by now (not based on this season) that Mr. Ausmus is not a very good manager. I suppose he'll be gone by the time the team is good again.

Maybe I'm being too pessimistic. Just saw that Freep (sorry, I know) article about the Wings' contract situations. Need another drink.

What's wrong with the Tigers? It's baseball, you're bound to win 60 games and lose 60, the rest is where the season is made. Miggy and Upton will get it together soon enough. Now the real question is whether they can get Sanchez back to being a sub 4.00 ERA guy, because if they dont then the rotation is real thin.

Sanchez is too inconsistent and injury prone. I wish they had shipped him out and been patient with Smyly and Robby Ray. Dombrowski gave up too much for Ray just to give him away after a year. I think Dombrowski and Avila probably butted heads over some of those moves. I like what Avila did this offseason with the exception of retaining Ausmus. That was a bad hire by Dombrowski and Avila had a chance to start over but he chose to stick with him. The last thing this team needs is an inexperienced manager figuring things out as he goes.

as for the Tigers, they'll be alright. It's only been 10% of the season thus far. Bats will warm up when the mercury rises, and Norris will replace Pelfrey or Greene in the rotation.

Drinking vodka mixed with Sprite Zero and cranberry.  My drink of choice.  The wife is pregnant and obviously can't drink.  But otherwise she would always partake with me.  I wanted to get some of the board's thoughts on drinking while the wife is pregnant.  Bad husband for doing so?

and tapering off to about zero as the day nears -  you never know when it will be time to race to the hospital.  i have done that more than most, and can't remember ever having had any booze on those nights/days, though i'm a pretty light drinker to begin with.

1. Ausmus is in over his head and no big payday player fears him in the least. 2. They have no team speed and cannot manufacture runs. 3. No player presents as a leader when times get tough. 4. They are lousy at fundamental things like bunting and base running. 5. Their starters give up too many home runs. 6. Mike Freakin Pelfrey is one of their starters. 7. Miggy is older and overweight. 8. VMarts legs have turned into low grade china. 9. Their starting SS is a diva and is overrated. 10. Upton is lucky to make contact during any at bat. Did I miss anything?

Regarding the first thing, I don't know that I would want Ausmus to be a feared presence so much as a respected one, but I don't even know if it really goes that far. That sort of brings us to the third point, in my view, because leadership should come from him and flow downward - it really doesn't seem like there is any on-field leadership like that. I could me misinterpreting things, of course, but I couldn't tell you with certainty who the "captain" is, if you will.

Sometimes I wonder if  it might even be like in "Weekend at Bernie's", with someone hiding behind Lamont (as large as he is, wouldn't be difficult)  and providing just enough arm movement to make it look like Lamont still has 'awareness'.
