rooting interest BCS bid
Ok everybody, part of the post-game celebration here is the prospect of a BCS bid! we're gonna needs some teams ahead of us to get beat and it looks pretty likely, though most of it is going to get worked out next week.
South Carolina (12) plays Clemson (17) today -- Go Clemson?
Oklahoma (9) plays Oklahoma State (4) next week -- Go OkSU
Georgia (13) plays LSU (1) next week -- go LSU (argh)
Sparty (14) plays Wisky (16) next week (or so it appears by the half time score in Madison) -- go Wisky
I suppose there could be some other games that could fall our way, but they would be pretty big upsets. I think our chances look pretty good for a BCS bowl.
Also: did I miss anything?

Notre Dame over Stanford would probably help us if you can stomach rooting for the Irish
November 26th, 2011 at 5:18 PM ^
As tough as it is rooting for them, it would make our win over them look better as well if they managed to pull off the upset.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:18 PM ^
that is something I am unable to do.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:19 PM ^
Yeah I think you're right. It would help our strength of schedule in the computers and give Stanford the same number of losses as us.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:20 PM ^
and ND in a too little, too late non-BCS bowl.
Tree fall down! (Can't muster a cheer for ND)

red hot nails in a gravy of molten glass than root for ND.

None of those games will affect our BCS chances, except for Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. We want Oklahoma State in that one.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:25 PM ^
We need to move up one spot to be BCS eligible, so having #14 Michigan State or #13 Georgia lose next week would definitely do the trick. Considering there was a huge gape between #14 and #15 in the last standings, its unlikely we move up to #14 this week.
And regardless, we want Georgia to lose because if they win, the SEC will get take a third BCS berth by having LSU, Alabama, and Georgia all automatically included.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:30 PM ^
Because Wisconsin will jump ahead of us (they'll beat Penn State and the Spartans).
November 26th, 2011 at 7:38 PM ^
the loser will be behind us.
We only need to move up one, but it has to come from somewhere else.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:36 PM ^
There are five SEC teams and three Big 12 teams ahead of us in the BCS rankings. We don't really need to root for much because those teams won't be eligible like we are. Boise State and Houston are both ahead of us as well, but only one of those teams (likely Houston) will be picked.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:45 PM ^
You have to be in the BCS Top 14 to get an at-large bid to a BCS bowl. So regardless of the mix of teams ahead of us, we're not going to a BCS bowl if we're ranked #15. Bottom line, we need to root for at least one team ranked ahead of us to lose. Ideally, its MSU and Georgia.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:48 PM ^
So if no one was eligible in the top 14, then the BCS bowls just wouldn't have teams? The top 14 moves to the top 15 and then top 16 until they find an eligible team, its the same way Illinois made it to the Rose Bowl a few years ago.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:51 PM ^
edit: dubbs.
November 26th, 2011 at 6:26 PM ^
There are only 4 BCS bowls + the championship = 10 BCS bowl teams. 4 of the top 14 get left out no matter what.
November 26th, 2011 at 7:13 PM ^
Plus, a shitty unranked Big East team will get a BCS auto bid as well. Bottom line, we need to be in the top 14 so we can be selected ahead of higher ranked BSC teams for one of the at-large slots. If Georgia wins, there will be one less at-large bid.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:58 PM ^
hmm, I needed a refresher on the rules.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:49 PM ^
The SEC does not get a third team. In order to get a 3rd team, neither of the teams in the championship game can be the conference winner. With Arkansas falling to LSU, the possibility of it shaking out that way vanished.
November 26th, 2011 at 6:11 PM ^
Assuming Alabama holds on to win, if Georgia beats LSU and LSU doesn't fall below 2 then Georgia (the SEC champion), Alabama and LSU (1 and 2 overall) will all make a BCS bowl.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:19 PM ^
I think a game against Houston would be our best shot at winning a BCS bowl
November 26th, 2011 at 5:24 PM ^
Not if we play the same way in the secondary that we did today.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:41 PM ^
Against Houston we can play more bodies in coverage. Our front 4 will dominate, and Houston (I believe) doesn't have a running back, just an OLine, a qb, and 57 WR's.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:52 PM ^
I think one WR got hurt yesterday late in the game. They may be down to 56 (but I guess he could be back by January).
November 26th, 2011 at 6:25 PM ^
Agreed. Part of the reason our DBs looked so bad today was that we were putting them out on an island against good WRs. We did this because we thought (correctly, for the most part) that Miller was a terrible QB, and it would be more important to stop the run. Against Houston, we would be able to commit 6 or 7 players to coverage every play, knowing that they will have no chance to run on us all game.

Oregon State over Oregon, lol
November 26th, 2011 at 5:21 PM ^
Is it completely dumb for me to buy Sugar Bowl tickets now?
November 26th, 2011 at 5:25 PM ^
!. The jinx factor.
2. While everyone's projecting Sugar Bowl, strange things can happen and Michigan could wind up in the Fiesta Bowl or even the Orange Bowl.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:29 PM ^
Bowl tickets are almost always easy to get. If you are still living in LA you shouldn't have any problem rounding up a few if/when Michigan gets sent there, probably for less than face value.
November 26th, 2011 at 6:23 PM ^
I'm pretty close and would love to be at that game. Where's the best place to purchase tickets?
November 26th, 2011 at 6:25 PM ^
As I live only 30 min from the stadium....
November 26th, 2011 at 5:27 PM ^
that is all.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:25 PM ^
thanks for posting this.
how far would Ok St drop with a loss. Is the Big12 getting 2 bcs teams for sure?
November 26th, 2011 at 5:30 PM ^
Ok st is dropping that far even if they lose and the Big 12 is not necessarily getting two teams in. But, we need OU to lose because they are the team that could drop below us allowing us to move up, otherwise it doesn't matter.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:31 PM ^
No. A three loss OU team, a two-loss K-State team, or a two-loss Ok. State team would all be behind Michigan and 11-1 Stanford from a ratings and general fan appeal perspective.
Assuming Houston wins out to claim an automatic bid and Stanford wins tonight, the three at-large teams will be 'Bama, Stanford, and Michigan.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:40 PM ^
Houston has already won out.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:43 PM ^
They still play in the CUSA Championship.

Neither did I until this week, lol.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:34 PM ^
Well, I think it's a forgone conclusion that we make a BCS bowl, however, we need the following to happen in order to guarantee it:
1. LSU Beats Georgia
2. OSU beats OU
If that happens, the rest is practically irrelevant.

to go to the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl?
November 26th, 2011 at 6:22 PM ^
But you bring up an interesting point. Little Caesar's matches a MAC team with an at large, like "O". The University of Ohio plays on Dec 2 for the MAC championship. So, in theory, it could play that 6-6 team we beat today in the Pizza Bowl.
So, my question really is: what else might it take for a matchup of"Ohio" vs "Ohio"? And which team then would we call Ohio?
lol
To resolve this confusion, maybe the NCAA needs to stirip that team we beat today of the "hio" and just call it "O" (as John Borton did this week).
November 26th, 2011 at 6:13 PM ^
According to Wikipedia (not sure that's the best place to look):
The Capital One, Outback, and Gator Bowls can select any eligible team except a team that has two fewer wins or two more losses than another eligible team. The Insight, TicketCity, Texas and Little Caesar's Pizza Bowls have no such restrictions, However, the bowls cannot select a 6–6 team if a 7–5 or better team is not selected by a Big Ten-affiliated bowl.Because there are probably going to be 5 Big Ten teams at 7-5 or 6-6 it will be a free-for-all. Ohio will probably get selected above a team like Purdue or maybe even Iowa.
My prediction:
Rose Bowl: Wisconsin
BCS Bowl: Michigan
Capital One: Sparty
Outback: Nebraska
Gator: Penn State
Insight: Iowa
TicketCity: Ohio
Texas/Caesars: who cares
November 26th, 2011 at 6:18 PM ^
I wouldn't be surprised if Nebraska leapfrogs MSU into that Cap 1 game.
November 26th, 2011 at 6:54 PM ^
It would be fitting since Nebraska pasted Sparty. You never know sometimes with these bowls what they're going to do.
