rooting interest BCS bid

Submitted by river-z on

Ok everybody, part of the post-game celebration here is the prospect of a BCS bid!  we're gonna needs some teams ahead of us to get beat and it looks pretty likely, though most of it is going to get worked out next week.

South Carolina (12) plays Clemson (17) today -- Go Clemson?

Oklahoma (9) plays Oklahoma State (4) next week -- Go OkSU

Georgia (13) plays LSU (1) next week -- go LSU (argh)

Sparty (14) plays Wisky (16) next week (or so it appears by the half time score in Madison)      -- go Wisky

I suppose there could be some other games that could fall our way, but they would be pretty big upsets.  I think our chances look pretty good for a BCS bowl.

Also: did I miss anything?

We need to move up one spot to be BCS eligible, so having #14 Michigan State or #13 Georgia lose next week would definitely do the trick.  Considering there was a huge gape between #14 and #15 in the last standings, its unlikely we move up to #14 this week.

And regardless, we want Georgia to lose because if they win, the SEC will get take a third BCS berth by having LSU, Alabama, and Georgia all automatically included.

There are five SEC teams and three Big 12 teams ahead of us in the BCS rankings. We don't really need to root for much because those teams won't be eligible like we are. Boise State and Houston are both ahead of us as well, but only one of those teams (likely Houston) will be picked.

You have to be in the BCS Top 14 to get an at-large bid to a BCS bowl.  So regardless of the mix of teams ahead of us, we're not going to a BCS bowl if we're ranked #15.  Bottom line, we need to root for at least one team ranked ahead of us to lose.  Ideally, its MSU and Georgia.

So if no one was eligible in the top 14, then the BCS bowls just wouldn't have teams? The top 14 moves to the top 15 and then top 16 until they find an eligible team, its the same way Illinois made it to the Rose Bowl a few years ago.

The SEC does not get a third team. In order to get a 3rd team, neither of the teams in the championship game can be the conference winner. With Arkansas falling to LSU, the possibility of it shaking out that way vanished.

Agreed. Part of the reason our DBs looked so bad today was that we were putting them out on an island against good WRs. We did this because we thought (correctly, for the most part) that Miller was a terrible QB, and it would be more important to stop the run. Against Houston, we would be able to commit 6 or 7 players to coverage every play, knowing that they will have no chance to run on us all game.

Bowl tickets are almost always easy to get.  If you are still living in LA you shouldn't have any problem rounding up a few if/when Michigan gets sent there, probably for less than face value.

Ok st is dropping that far even if they lose and the Big 12 is not necessarily getting two teams in.  But, we need OU to lose because they are the team that could drop below us allowing us to move up, otherwise it doesn't matter.

No.  A three loss OU team, a two-loss K-State team, or a two-loss Ok. State team would all be behind Michigan and 11-1 Stanford from a ratings and general fan appeal perspective.

Assuming Houston wins out to claim an automatic bid and Stanford wins tonight, the three at-large teams will be 'Bama, Stanford, and Michigan.

Well, I think it's a forgone conclusion that we make a BCS bowl, however, we need the following to happen in order to guarantee it:

1. LSU Beats Georgia

2. OSU beats OU

If that happens, the rest is practically irrelevant.

Your rooting interest are Alabama/LSU title game, Oregon, ND, and Ok State. Michigan is almost certainly a BCS team, but that basically ices it and gives us the most winnable game.

But you bring up an interesting point.  Little Caesar's matches a MAC team with an at large, like "O".   The University of Ohio plays on Dec 2 for the MAC championship.   So, in theory, it could play that 6-6 team we beat today in the Pizza Bowl.

So, my question really is: what else might it take for a matchup of"Ohio" vs "Ohio"?  And which team then would we call Ohio?

lol

To resolve this confusion, maybe the NCAA needs to stirip that team we beat today of the "hio" and just call it "O" (as John Borton did this week).

According to Wikipedia (not sure that's the best place to look):

The Capital One, Outback, and Gator Bowls can select any eligible team except a team that has two fewer wins or two more losses than another eligible team. The Insight, TicketCity, Texas and Little Caesar's Pizza Bowls have no such restrictions, However, the bowls cannot select a 6–6 team if a 7–5 or better team is not selected by a Big Ten-affiliated bowl.

Because there are probably going to be 5 Big Ten teams at 7-5 or 6-6 it will be a free-for-all.  Ohio will probably get selected above a team like Purdue or maybe even Iowa.

My prediction:

Rose Bowl: Wisconsin

BCS Bowl: Michigan

Capital One: Sparty

Outback: Nebraska

Gator: Penn State

Insight: Iowa

TicketCity: Ohio

Texas/Caesars: who cares
