Quick Clip Of Incoming Freshman Punter Brad Robbins Launching A 5 Second Hang Time BOMB At AIA Football Camp Today

Submitted by MichiganStan on

With all the talent we got on the defensive and offensive side of the ball its easy to forget we got the #1 Punter in 2017 as well, Brad Robbins.

Heres a quick clip Brandon Kornblue posted on twitter today from the camp displaying the cannon Robbins has for a leg:

Brian Marich thinks its a possiblity he's good enough to start as a Freshman.

I have no reason to believe that Robbins won't be an immediate contributor in a few months, but why was the "best punter in the nation" stolen from ... Nevada? They're not a Power 5 team.

Kid is a great athlete too. Meyer tried to keep him away from Michigan by getting Rutgers Chris Ash to offer him a scholarship. He had a couple of others in Navy and Illinois. He wants to study Engineering.

I'm not an expert (clearly) but I have experience with special teams mechanics, good punting mechanics usually use a two step and drop method. It seems Brad is a 3 step punter, which is not a terrible thing but it will definitely open the door more to possibility of blocked kicks. So while this was a fantastic punt with top tier hang time, I'm slightly nervous about the mechanics. Now I'll be the first to say if the worst thing all year is our punter taking an extra step it'll be a great year. Just some food for thought.

Using my phone stopwatch, I timed how quickly Robbins got the kick off from the time the snap hit his hands. In three tests, I got 1.56 seconds twice and 1.6 seconds.

Assuming the video playback speed is accurate, is this a fast or slow time?

This site indicates that the time should be 1.2 seconds, but I have no idea how authoritative it is.

our starting punter this fall - based on the above video, what I've read about him, and what I observed at the spring game.  As the post above says about the three step he takes, there may be some things he still needs to tweak.  But, I'm not worried at all.  He's at the right camp to hone his skills and he'll be in good hands when he gets here.

We've learend to appreciate the value of a solid punter over the last few years, whether it is someone who can boom one or drop one inside (sometimes well inside) the 20.  This kid might have time to learn to do both.  Nice.

Why would starting as a freshman be a big deal for a punter? He's either the best in the team or he's not. He won't need to bulk up.

Well we already have 3 K/P not counting Quinn Nordin who can punt but will most likely just be our kicker. And its not like Michigan has been pulling in poor quality kicker/Punters lately so it'd be a pretty big achievement for Robbins to start as a Freshman

Kicking isnt necessairly about bulking up but learning better technique  from better coaches. Im going to doubt many punters can enter college with good enough power and technique to beat out all the other more expierenced punters on the team who have learned from college coaches already.

Nobody's saying its like huge deal but its pretty cool to think we might have 2 consecutive #1 Kickers/Punters in the nation, Freshman and Sophmore, growing together on our Special Teams. By the time both are upperclassmen our kicking game is going to be insanely good.
