Phil Steele: 2019 Michigan Football losing to Clemson in Semifinal

Submitted by markusr2007 on June 18th, 2019 at 3:29 PM

Phil Steele predicts that Michigan is going to the CFB semifinals in 2019.

Steele likes Michigan's new OC, new offensive philosophy, QB, veteran OL and Don Brown. He also likes the fact that Michigan gets Notre Dame, MSU and Ohio State in Ann Arbor.

I wouldn’t say they looked weak all year, possibly the first 11 games of the season. The last three games all they did was crush us, win the Big Ten Championship and win the Rose Bowl.

With OSU having an unproven QB, who may be a better runner than a thrower, in a pass-happy offense, I like our chances against them. I would like them even more if they still had Schiano running their defense.

Same.  I've downgraded my long term expectations of the program from compete yearly for National Titles to compete yearly for Big Ten Titles which they basically are already doing.

We all know the current college football landscape means it's unrealistic to expect to join the Clemson and Bama's of the world.  Just give me a Big Ten Title, please.

Do you honestly think that Lloyd had any bagmen?

Unless you know something I don't... I think it had more to do with the perception of Michigan then versus now. The people we are recruiting now have seen Michigan win one Big Ten title in their lifetime, where people in the late 90s/early aughts had seen that for almost a majority of their lives with a national title to boot.

The one consistent thing in our retreat from BIG titles has been from being shut out of Ohio for the recruits, starting with Tressel.  Fact is,w need way more top Ohio recruits, and that will be the difference again.  They know how important that game is, and being from there they just have to win it.  Why we  see way more Ohio recruits. And same reason why dantoni has a few titles.

This is true and certainly a component in our inability to compete with OSU.  I would submit that OSU's talent level has generally been higher (just how much is up for debate) over the last decade with one or two exceptions.  Meyer has generally been the better coach.  If the better coach only has to "out coach" us due to equal or slightly lower talent twice a decade, well we see the results.

Only if any of you have lived in Ohio, do you understand the degree to which OSU has locked down that state starting in the Fifties.  It permeates every facet of life down there.  Non-stop.  If it is true that "Winning solves everything", OSU has a big lead over us which magnifies the situation.

It's not impossible, but it is one BIG challenge.

So far the guys in this thread are pussy's. If we get to the semifinal and lose to Clemson I would be pissed. It's a step in the right direction, but fuck that. To hell with Notre Dame.

We haven't even BEEN to the B1G Championship Game once and you're calling people "pussy's" for being happy with a potential top-4 finish which would in all likelihood mean we won the B1G in 2019.....?

You are ridiculous. Making the top 4 is always a good season no matter what, and maybe against the popular opinion on here Notre Dame and MSU should not feel bad about getting blown out in it. 2016 OSU can fuck off and should feel bad, because that team didn't deserve to be there.

"So far the guys in this thread are pussy's."

One of the venerable MGoBlog traditions is "Predictions of how Michigan will do as indicator of manliness/testosterone level/estrogen level/Alpha Dog status." Thanks for stepping up.

Steele's 2018 prediction:

 https://www.mlive.com/wolverines/2018/06/phil_steeles_michigan_forecast_1.html

"Steele projects a second-place finish in the Big Ten East, which would be the best finish for a Jim Harbaugh coached team since he arrived in Ann Arbor prior to the 2015 season.

That finish, Steele predicts, will send Michigan to the Chick-fil-A Peach Beach in Atlanta on Dec. 29."
