OT: Why don't the Lions have division title/retired jersey banners?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Never really understood why they don't have any banners hanging in Ford Field. They didn't even do this when they played at the Silverdome.

I get that hanging NFL champions banners from the old days would be fodder for internet and opposing fans. But what about the pair of division titles they won in the 90s? And the former greats they had play for them like Bobby Lane, Doak Walker, Barry Sanders etc?

They have the retired names on the overhang of the 2nd level. Doak Walker, Bobby Lane, Joe Schmidt, Charlie Sanders, and Chuck Hayes all have their names up at Ford Field.

One of the retired jerseys belonged to wr  #85 Chuck Hughes who passed away on the field during a game [heart attack, I think].  Because the Lions were behind and there was not much time to play, the radio announcer originally thought Hughes was pretending to be hurt, so that the officials would call a time-out.  When the announcer was quickly informed how bad it really was, the radio went silent for a bit before the announcer recovered.

Given that there are only four teams in an NFL division, hanging a banner to celebrate finishing first seems a little silly.

They should commemorate the past NFL championships, though.

I remember the 50's. Just like they were yesterday. Good productive times indeed. I remember being able to go down to the local burger joint and giving the soda jerk a dime. I would drink root beer all day long. Sometimes if we were lucky we would sneak into toy store and play on the escalators.

They had division championship banners at the Silverdome in the last couple seasons. I guess they didn't really save space for them in the design of Ford Field. Honestly, I don't think any pro team should celebrate division championships with banners. It's ridiculous how many banners the Wings used to have ("1987 Norris Division Playoff Champions").

- The Lions had division/championship banners at the Silverdome, but enever moved them to Ford Field.

- The Lions didn't plan on having a Ring Of Honor, but when the NCAA took over Ford Field in 2008 or 2009, they put up a lot of decorations with adhesive that messed up a lot of surfaces.  The Lions then put up banners as a "ring of honor" that completely cover up the stains.

It would be the shittiest example in the NFL would be one reason. They have been a team forever, and haven't done well since it changed to Superbowls.

Cuz everyone who was alive when Lions won is either dead or doesn't remember anymore like my team the Cleveland Indians. And thank F-Head Modell for turning my favorite, once great team team into a F'ing joke. Kelly, Darden, Matthews, Sipe, Kosar, Minniefield, Newsome, Byner, Mack, Rucker, Brennan, oh never mind. The new Browns are so tuuurribble it's sad.

May be when I'm a really old dude they will finally win, 30 years from now. The law of averages should kick in here and you would think the Lions will win a superbowl. It's been almost 50 years since the first superbowl, you would think they would win once before we get to Superbowl 100,  Superbowl C ?

I was in the choir that got to sing the national anthem at that Lions/Redskins game in DC.  It was a good time.  Pat O'Brien was the coolest dude in the world.  Herman Moore wouldn't shake my hand after the game because I was heckling him during the game.  I was maybe 8 years old... lol
