OT: Watching Michigan sports out of state

Submitted by uncle leo on July 4th, 2020 at 1:11 PM

Hi All! Hope you guys are having a nice 4th (don't party too hard)

Question as you guys are pretty wise to these types of situations. I foresee myself moving in the next two years out of the state, as I am looking to mix things up a touch. What is the best possible way to continue to watch our local teams, basically our pro sports teams (Fox Sports Detroit) and Michigan. Is it possible to get Fox Sports Detroit in another state? How have you guys managed this for those who have moved? Thanks!

I am unaware of any way to get fox sports Detroit out of their service are, accept getting a sling box that you leave at a friends house in Detroit.  The only option I found for the pro teams is to by the season passes, like MLB extra innings and Sunday ticket.  For Michigan you really just need BTN and ESPN, hose are readily available on most cable packages.  If you cut the cord, you can look at any of a million other threads on that topic.

This doesn’t seem quite right to me. I’m only a casual NFL watcher, but I am 85% certain that, when I was traveling, the YouTube TV app would only show NFL games based on my region.

for Michigan football, YouTube tv should carry every game, whether that’s ESPN or BTN.

if nfl and mlb are important to you, then you might just have to shell out for their “season ticket.” Not the end of the world if you love sports.

You do have to log in from somewhere in that zip every so often though. I share my account with my Mother (who was paying $200 a month for cable before) so it works out for me.

I found it easier to follow U of M sports out of state than the Pro teams. Good luck watching the Lions without Sunday Ticket or YouTube TV.

You can get ALL of the RSNs (like Fox Sports Detroit) on Directv for $10/month. It isn’t advertised anywhere in their site (and hasn’t been now for years), but you just have to call and ask to have the “Sports Pack” added. They’ll blackout content that is part of another package (like MLB, NHL, etc), but it’s great for the local sports news shows, etc.

Vablue covered M.

Most sports leagues offer tv-streaming services and they're reasonably inexpensive ($50 for every game for one team.) However, those games must not be available on local television where you are.

That means that games that they are playing vs. the local team will not be included and nationally televised games will not be available. If you're planning on cutting the cord fully, that might be a problem.

Amazon firestick , load it with free apps or you can find one that you pay 10-20 per month for.

They can have thousands of channels from all around the world . .

I stick with the ones that have mostly usa/canada  channels .

NHL center ice and it should carry all the local fox sports....or  Have someone you know in Michigan set up a sling box on a tv for you.

I think most or all FSD games are available on the Fox Sports streaming app for AppleTV, FireStick, and the like. It requires that you have a cable package including FS1, but it does the trick. Otherwise, MLB.TV is the gold standard. Every game, and super-high quality.

In Kansas, most of the time when FOX sports is showing Michigan, it is on down here. May be farther west they have a PAC 12 game instead of the Michigan game. When Michigan is on ABC/ESPN it is always on in KS. I would make sure you have the B1G network to get the other conference games.

I live in AZ. Michigan games aren't ever an issue anymore as long as you have a normal cable package and it includes B1G Ten Network. Tigers/Wings/Pistons/Lions are tougher. In the past I've purchased the league pass packages that gave me all the games, and i believe now you can pay less and only get one team. For me, none of those teams have been worth watching for several years now so it hasn't been a big deal.

Wisconsin here.  Have Hulu live and haven't missed a mbb or FB game for the reason of not having it available.  Detroit teams are tough but I don't have much interest at the moment.

You should be fine with respect to U-M sports, since 99% of all football and basketball games are televised nationally on ABC/ESPN, BTN, FS, or CBS. In the 12 years since I moved away from Michigan, I can think of only one game that I couldn't watch (the Toledo game in 2008).

No idea with respect to the pro sports teams.

for Fox Sports Detroit, simply use a VPN on your computer or a GPS spoof on your android phone, and place yourself in metro Detroit and then use the FOX app (assuming you have a login via some sort of paid cable/tv subscription) and you are good to go to stream.  Then just cast to your TV or watch on said computer/phone device.

Michigan is easy - national audience, games on ABC/ESPN, CBS, or FOX/FS1 will always be available, unless you move down south, in which case the ACC/SEC game may be the regional broadcast. Living in SoCal, I've never had an issue.

The only thing is you need to figure out a way to get BTN - most cord cutter (fubo, sling, youtubetv etc) have it, but some cable carriers may not have it - the local cable provider here (Spectrum) does not.

For pro sports, with Fubo and some some of those cord cutter services, you likely will need to either register with a michigan zip, address or I.P. if you have family in MI who can put it on their card and you reimburse them monthly, that's an easy workaround to get FSD.
