OT: Pearl dumber than Kiffin??
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/sec/2009-09-25-te…
More verbal diarrhea from a school that seems to have an endless supply!
I guess Pearl doesn't want Kiffin to be known as the one dumb@ss on the block...

He still has a whole lot of catching up to do.

I think its pretty obvious he was not trying to insult anyone...I think the guy is a douche, but their is no reason to drag his name in the mud.
Live. Learn. Move On.

Yeah I didn't think it was that big of a deal, when anyone says something racially without malice I kind of just let it slide.

this is even in the same ballpark as Kiffin.
Kiffin has stated in interviews he has intentionally been an asshole in order to drum up attention for the program and for recruiting.
This was a slip of the tongue followed by a comprehensive apology.
There is no question that Bruce Pearl made an unwise comment and explained it, and that Lane Kiffin is an immature douchebag.

I thought it was hilarious...seriously.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:08 PM ^
Yeah it was pretty funny, I saw a video of it. Bruce Pearl is a far cry from the douchebaggery of Lane Kiffin.
September 25th, 2009 at 3:27 PM ^
Honestly, KKK jokes are sort of destined to fall flat. But I agree with the poster that said Pearl didn't seem to have any malice here. It'll be forgotten soon enough.

Fans at the Michigan game can take solace in the fact the "no bags allowed" rule will prevent douchebags from attending the game.

My personal tastes are such that I have a much broader definition of what can be mined for humor than the general public.
It now remains to be seen whether the good folks of Grainger County, Tennessee, have a similar sense of humor.
For the record, the county he speaks of has long been known as a community where freed slaves and mixed-race people (many who fought for their country in the Revolutionary War) settled. During the Civil War, Grainger County women took up rifles and helped the Union achieve a small victory when outnumbered 10-to-1 by Confederate troops coming through.
Not to say that there has never been Klan activity there (Appalachia in general still has a lot of racial problems), but of all the counties to say that about, it's ironic he picked the one Appalachian County where pro-Northern sentiment has always been strong, and a large mixed-race population has enjoyed relative equality for two centuries.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:04 PM ^
Im a little confused because in this article it says the county is 98 percent white, http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4502768
That doesn't sound like a large mixed race population. I am not doubting your research or knowledge but just find the discrepancy between number and adjective interesting.

I was referring to the Melungeon ethnic group, who presumably primarily identify as white/Caucasian today.

Thank you for the information. I guess you truly do learn something new everyday!

It kills brain cells.
September 25th, 2009 at 3:49 PM ^
its race humor so of course it will be OMG YOU CANT SAY THAT, but reading into what hes saying he seems proud that he has guys from a variety of cultural backgrounds. and there's nothing wrong with that. i actually kind of like the guy more now
September 25th, 2009 at 5:40 PM ^
Bruce is a good guy who said something stupid on the spot. Kiffin is an idiot that plans in great detail is stupidity.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:34 PM ^
This was a funny joke that wasn't appropriate for the audience it was told to in a public forum. (Although the audience thought it was hilarious.) He's apologized. Nothing to see here.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:50 PM ^
Pearl tends to be a loudmouth, class clown, center of attention, diarrhea-of-the-mouth type. Doesn't make him a jerk exactly, but that type of guy is eventually going to say something he shouldn't.
In short, shrug.
September 25th, 2009 at 8:17 PM ^
All he needed to say in his apology was three beautiful words:
I
Was
Drunk

Funny story: he divorced his wife, and took up with a 25-year-old not long after they moved from Milwaukee to Knoxville. His wife, naturally, got a chunk of change out of the whole thing, and this was the end result:
