Unbeaten boxer Floyd Mayweather will fight UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor in a much-discussed boxing match on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas, a well-placed source told Yahoo Sports on Wednesday. Mayweather is expected to make the announcement on social media as early as Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not available, but it will either be at the MGM Grand Garden or T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Nevada Athletic Commission on Wednesday approved the request from Mayweather Promotions to put on a boxing card on Aug. 26 at the MGM Grand. The venue could change, however, to T-Mobile.

would you put a world champ in the ring with a record of 40 plus wins vs the Olympic gold Metalist in the same weight class (154?). Hell no... this will be Conor's first fight 0-0 lol, WTF is everybody getting all geeked abt? 12 rounds to 0 boring af, Floyd doesn't really have to do anything but counter and collect his bread.

The only possible excitement coming out of this fight would be to see if Floyd can actually knock someone out instead of running around with a million little jabs the whole fight like every other fight of his career.  Unfortunately, I don't think McGregor will go down via knockout either -- he'll just swing and miss a ton and take Floyd's million little jabs -- kind of like every other Mayweather fight we have ever seen.

I strongly agree with most here. IF the fight happens, it will be awful.

Floyd's style makes the chance of a lucky shot by McGregor extremely unlikely, and his ability to pile up points will make it a rout.

Mayweather's never lost to a boxer; who would possibly think he'd get beat by an MMA guy in a boxing match?

Any decent boxer would easily beat McGregor in boxing, just as any decent MMA fighter would beat Mayweather in MMA.

I'd say his puncher's chance better than that.  Conor is a very high-level striker, he doesn't use takedowns to beat anyone.  But his cardio is suspect, he got gassed early against Diaz.

Besides, Floyd is 40 & nobody stays on top forever.  He might retire before he loses, but it's just a matter of time that he gets caught if he continues to fight.

He's a high level striker by UFC standards against guys who haven't spent years learning how to take punches the way boxers can. This is before you get into the fact he's an amateur boxer fighting against arguably the greatest defensive boxer in history. Even at 40 years of age for Floyd, 20 to 1 odds for McGregor would be generous.

Wait... UFC killed boxing, yet UFC's biggest star fighter is switching to boxing to make his largest pay day ever?

If UFC truly killed boxing, then why do UFC fighters make peanuts compared to boxers? Why is UFC's largest star switching sports?

UFC hasn't done shit to boxing. The problem with boxing is that its most prominent division, heavyweight, hasn't been relevant in years since the Klitschko bros took it by storm. That's the issue with boxing.

I'm guessing the press stuff will be highly entertaining in the ugliest way imaginable, but this is likely the easiest money Floyd will ever make.

Has finally gone too far.  Or has it?  He's going to make some serious $$$$.  But he will get destroyed unless he goes for a takedown and submission.

Interesting for boxing and MMA fans though!

anyone can close their eyes and swing and land a knockout punch. Barring that unlikely event, I have seen McGregor box, Mayweather can literally call the second he wants the fight to end. In MMA Conor wins, boxing match no chance.

I would have much rather heard McGregor- Diaz announced. I will pay the $100- $110 we're about to pay for Mayweather, but there's more out there for Conor then this. But it's going to be one hell of a payday.

McGregor has a punchers chance. Mayweather is not going to knock out McGregor, doesn't have the power and Connor is use to taking shots with the 4oz gloves. Most likely outcome is unanimous decision for Mayweather Will be interesting the first 3 or so rounds when both are fresh

As far as I can see he's had a couple of amateur fights but nothing at the pro level? All common sense points to Mayweather making it a boring fight that ends up in a decision. Get ready for Mayweather - Pacquio II. Hyped up fight that ends up with everybody booing or falling asleep. I would love to see this followed up with an MMA match.

Mayweather haters delusional as always. Expect Mcgregor to throw in the towel by the 5th if Mayweather hasnt beaten him unconscious before then. No reason for Mayweather to play it safe, Mcgregor isnt the walking blitzkrieg that is Pacquiao, infact i doubt Mcgregor stays upright against the worst boxer in Mayweathers gym.

I really don't know how this fight will play out. Mayweather is the best defensive boxer of all time but he's coming off a 2 year lay off post retirement. We don't know what kind of shape Flloyd will be in, what his cardio will be like, what weight the fight will be at and not to mention he is 41 years old. You don't get quicker with age.

For the sake of boxing I hope Floyd wins. I expect a strange fight and I don't think it will be as easy for Mayweather as some folks believe. Conor is bigger, stronger and most likely in better shape but, I wonder how 3-5 rounds of MMA equals out to 12 rounds of boxing and if Conors power will translate to boxing.

Since so many folks are thinking this will be Mayweather with ease, I'd put my money on McGregor ( wonder if Floyd is doing the same)

In 24 of Mayweather's 49 victories, he has fought 10 or 12 round decisions, for 30 to 36 minutes of action.

In 2 of McGregor's 21 victories, he fought to 5- and 3-round decisions, for 25 and 15 minutes of action, respectively. In none of his other fights did he fight for even 2 full rounds, or 10 minutes.

While there's no question that McGregor is in great condition, it's still a fact that he isn't accustomed to fighting for even 10 minutes total. By contrast, in 12 of Mayweather's last 14 fights, he's fought for 36 minutes.

In addition, Mayweather has fought all these 36-minute fights wearing 10-oz gloves. McGregor has fought his much shorter fights wearing 4-oz gloves.

Sure, it's possible that McGregor can land a lucky shot, but Mayweather has been in the ring with a number of hard-hitting fighters who are far more trained in the specifics of boxing than McGregor will be, and has never been cleanly knocked down with a punch.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the fight go the distance, but once the fight gets to the 6th round, McGregor is going to be reaching the limit of his normal fighting time, and Mayweather will be deadly against a tiring fighter.

This.  No doubt McGregor is very well conditioned for 5x5 minute rounds, but this will be 12 at 3.  While you may not think a difference of 11 minutes would make that much of a difference, you have to consider that the whole flow of the fight is completely different.  Guys that have boxed since they were children get exposed as having stamina issues as they move through the normal progression of amateur and professional boxing bout length - amateur at 3 rounds, 6, 8, 10, 12 in the pros.  Don't be surprised to see him slow at the midway point of the fight.

Beyond that, you are talking about one of the most skilled defensive fighters of this generation.  Mayweather opponents in his career land something like 16% of their punches against him.  Pacquiao, shoulder injury or not, is one of the most gifted offensive fighters of recent years and perhaps ever.  He landed at 13%.  Frankly the over under should be on how many punches McGregor lands, most guys don’t go double digits on Mayweather in any round and these are fighters who have trained specifically to box almost their entire life.  It wouldnt surprise my to see the Notorious land an average of 5.

I was trying to think of an apt sports analogy as I think the rationale for most people giving McGregor a chance is the striking element of his MMA fighting - which is known to be good comparatively to other MMA fighters.  The best I could come up with is a top level cricketer trying to hit a fastball off Clayton Kershaw or something.  No doubt the cricketer possesses amazing hand eye coordination in a similar sport, but he is lucky to even sniff contact against the best in a discipline that he has not dedicated his entire life to mastering. Part of me thinks the most likely outcome is McGregor getting so frustrated that he goes rogue and gets DQ’ed.

It would be nice if McGregor had a couple of tune-up fights because the guy has a legit chance of crossing over if he gains some experience. But, of course, that might expose him and ruin the chance for the big pay-day. Hence he goes straight to the fight against the guy who is among the best ever at not getting hit. If McGregor is in great shape (why not, he's a phenomenal athlete, it's a smaller ring and he won't use as much energy wrestling in the clinches), he has a decent shot at losing 120-108. Mayweather has the patience to do what he does best for 36 minutes and not succumb to the temptation to try for a knockout. I doubt he would have taken the fight if he wasn't secure in this game plan, because he has much more to lose than McGregor.
