OT: Delaware Moves Up to FBS; Possible Future Opponent?
Delaware is joining Conference USA and moving up to the FBS level in 2025 and I'm guessing we'll see them on the schedule a few years after that. Why? Because as you know, they're the only FBS team that wears the winged helmet.
As long as we're playing 1-2 cupcakes a year, we might as well make one of them look like a spring game. Their colors are a bit different, but the design is the same.
Delaware started using the winged helmets in the 1940s thanks to their coach, David Nelson, who was a halfback for Fritz Crisler at Michigan in the late 1930s.
Delaware's current athletic director is former Michigan swimmer and administrator Chrissi Rawak, which lends more credibility to my theory that she'll be asking Warde to schedule the game.

That's literally the worst possible mistake I could have made.

Nope. Worst mistake is this was already posted on the board.

I like this idea. Loser has to change their helmet for the rest of the season.

They must be excited.

David Nelson (with his winged helmets) didn't start coaching Delaware until 1951.

My grandfather played football at Delaware in the late 30s. Wish I had film of him playing.
November 29th, 2023 at 1:47 PM ^
Be careful - how that video of him playing may create some issues. Is it still within any statute of limitations the NCAA may enforce?
November 29th, 2023 at 2:05 PM ^
Eh, I played against him, he wasnt anything special.

Craig Ross might have some reels still around from when he was recording those games.

And, of course, we can't forget about Princeton - an Ivy League FCS institution that also wears the winged helmet.

And the Gustavus Adolphus Golden Gusties in D-III

Perhaps we should form a winged helmet conference where on site scouting is allowed.
November 29th, 2023 at 1:54 PM ^
Uhm, No.
Delaware should be Slippery Rock, nothing more or less.
Go Blue.

Lets leave well enough alone on this one.
We beat Del St. in RRods 2nd year 63-6. It was the only win in the last 8 games of the season. In fact it was 1 of only 2 wins in RRods first two years after the month of September. 2 and fucking 15 for what was the horror show in months not named September. Let's not bring back any of those fucked up memories. If someone could flashy thing me and make me forget I would welcome it.

Would be kinda cool and a way to discuss the ties between the two other than the obvious helmet. But their different shade of blue and all of those similar but different winged helmets would be a total eyesore

a friend's son is currently on the Delaware football team. They overcame a 21pt second half deficit last weekend to advance and are playing in Montana this weekend.
