NCAA Hockey Tournament
Even though Michigan's not in it, there have been some results that may be of some interest to some folks here:
Yale beat North Dakota to go to their first Frozen Four in over 60 years - Yale got in as an at-large after Michigan lost to Notre Dame in the CCHA finals.
New Hampshire beat Denver yesterday, and Mass-Lowell beat Wisconsin. This means that the programs with the most national titles after Michigan (9), Denver (7), North Dakota (7), and WIsconsin (6) are out.
Notre Dame (1 seed) got housed by St. Cloud State, 5-1. That's St. Cloud's 2nd tournament win ever (2-9).
The Dynasty is the last CCHA team left - they lead Minnesota State (nee Mankato State) 2-0 in the 3rd.
No B1G teams remain - MN, WI out, MI, MSU, OSU never in, PSU never mind.
A good year for the east schools in the NCAA Plinko - 3 teams from the east will be in the Frozen Four (Yale, New Hampshire or Mass-Lowell, winner of East Regional).
Compared to MMB's ongoing run and the men's swimming team on the verge of a 12th national title, this is small potatoes, but just more good stuff (as much as good can come from a tournament Michigan isn't in).
There's not a single major / large fanbase team left except for BC. Miami is major but no fans. The other possible teams to win it are
- Yale
- New Hampshire
- Massachusetts - Lowell (Fake Umass)
- Quinnipiac
- Canisius
- Minnesota State
- St Cloud State
No Minnesotas, Michigans, Denvers, BUs, etc. Kind of a weird tournament
I'll defer to you, coach.
BC's fanbase isn't that huge, but its significant. If we can get them bumped off, we will see a new winner, making it 2 for the last 3.
Of course BC will probably win again. I hate BC.

even when they're winning.
north dakota has the most insufferable fans. every year i'm happy to see them lose.
maine fans were kind of obnoxious, too. that hasn't been an issue for a few years now.
of course, i'm not an obnoxious fan, but i wonder what people say about michigan fans (at least away from yost).
part of me was hoping for a und-und final, with und beating und in overtime. oh, well... if michigan can't win it, let someone else win it.
Single elimination hockey, everybody!
I'm bummed it looks like Quinnipiac is gonna pull this out. I was really hoping for the 1-16 upset. Obviously it's a 1 goal game, but I'm not feelin it for Canisius
Quinnipiac did indeed survive.
Duplicate post. Too fast with the mouse.
2-5 so far for the WCHA. I think they broke the Pairwise code. 6 Teams in the tournament and you put in a perofrmance like that.
and 24 hours later all are eliminated but 1. And that team (St Cloud) has to get through a good Miami team
Please someone beat Miami.
UML just opened the scoring on New Hampshire with :29.7 left in the 2nd.
Eli Yale!
Yale beat 1 seed Minn and 2 seed UND.
I love u Yale
Should be an interesting tournament at least with Yale in the FF for the first time in like 50 years and UML in it for the first time ever
It's bizarre that there's no standard ice size in college hockey. Most of the regionals have been on the college/pro sized rinks but now the BC-Union game is on a cavernous Olympic sheet
Actually, the NCAA instituted a "recommendation" of 200x100, olympic size, for college ice rinks. However, it was not a requirement. There was a period of time that a number of new rinks were built to the 200x100 spec, but without the NHL making the same move the experiment was doomed to fail. While several teams still have the larger sheets, newer rinks (such as the Ralph in Grand Forks) have gone back to the 200x85 standard. Just not worth the hassle.
Can someone explain where The Dynasty comes from and what team this is? It looks like there were some shocking upsets yesterday.

At that time, Miami had won two CCHA season titles, no CCHA tournament titles, and made no frozen fours in five appearances.

because the author clearly doesn't understand what a dynasty is. His basis for a dynasty is:
- "a head coach committed to the team for a long time"
- "a home arena they are truly proud of"
- "the ability to recruit"
- "Miami hockey is not a dynasty because they have failed to win national championships, or at least contend for them"
I love it because items 1-3 are nonsense and Miami's only shot at a national title was one of the most (heartbreaking) chokejobs I've ever seen.

Union shells BC 5-1.
We're guaranteed to have a first-time champion this year.
