Mike Farrell says this won't hurt OSU with in state kids
They don't know much about a coaching change, obviously. May they learn the hard way and come out with even fewer teeth than they already have because of it.
The difference is that there isn't an in-state school to compete with them. Howeva, a resurgent ND and Michigan could make this the worst Buckeye class in a long time.
Actually, there is Cincinnati, which is now theoretically a BCS-level school. This could be a chance for them to break through in recruiting.
You might need to edit the red part of the series record in your avatar soon.
... if the NCAA cuts scholarships. It hurts with kids in-state and out-of-state if the school has fewer scholarships.
So Mike Farrell has no idea what he's talking about. And I'd say if the sanctions are severe, it will hurt all recruiting because kids are drawn to winners and won't want to sacrifice their four years to participate in a down period.
Moreover, we are learning that all of Tressel's dominant recruiting was essentially fraudulent, driven by extra benefits and a tolerance of anything they could get away with. Tressel's entire run is being revealed as him running a program with professional, paid athletes against everyone else playing by amateur rules. Let any bigtime school with a bigtime coaching staff play by Tressel rules, and they'll win.
So it's a little too soon to say this won't matter to in-state kids.
It's also more than a little soon to say what you're saying.
I think we know what should be done. Take down the mythical national championship and forfeit every game after the Maurice Clarett season.

When Michigan cheated, all evidence of the Webber years and thereafter were purged. Banners were taken down, and no matter how unfair it was to those who did not partake, the victories were vacated. The same should apply to buck nuts. This kinda makes me appreciate MSC.
Tressel dominated Michigan in recruiting because Ohio HS football talent is far superior to Michigan HS football talent.

Tressel was routinely beaten out by other schools for out-of state talent and even some top Ohio kids.

Tressel either did not provide illegal benefits to entice recruits, or he was OUT BID numerous times by the likes of Michigan, USC, Florida, FSU, Texas, illinois, Notre Dame, even Rutgers.

about a coaching change. No sanctions have been set against OSU yet and it would make no sense for him to assume there will be. I'm sure his answer would change if the NCAA slaps OSU the way they did SC. I want to know what is going to happen to Ginn Sr.? If it is proven that he was being paid I would think the NCAA would have to ban Glenville kids from going to OSU as I don't think Ginn Sr. is going to fire himself unless the OHSAA can oust him.
One of the most accurate representations of Mike Farrell you will ever see.
Ohio kids will still dream of wearing the scarlet and grey. That will not change, even if the article in SI is as severe as we're all hoping. However, if the NCAA docks them a bunch of scholarships a la USC, then yeah TSIO takes a hit with instate recruiting, no doubt.
For what it's worth, Luginbill just said the same thing on Sportscenter.
I could see how in state kids would really want to play for osu if they have grown up dreaming of doing so. I think they are underestimating the power of negative recruitining and preception.
Sporting News differs from Luginbill and Farrell with some actual quotes from recruits.
I don't think Hoke and the rest of the coaching staff really need to negatively recruit right now with other programs probably going to negatively recruit against OSU. This probably helps a lot, taking the high road in that regard. I think it can pay dividends. There's not way the recruits aren't going to be affected by this, whether they go or stay OSU or decide to go elsewhere.
I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't
Go read some of the comments on Bucknuts. Those people honestly believe the media, the attorney, and the NCAA MADE Tressel jump on his sword. Even the mother of OH OL Kyle Dodson said, "the NCAA has lost a lot of respect from people around here (for their witch-hunt tactics)."
Buckeye fans who grew up and live in Ohio have an entirely different take on the matter than you or I (or millions of others outside of Ohio) do.
Hell, go onto the Blue Board over at 247. The fans of the SEC honestly believe there's nothing wrong with oversigning recruits and cutting kids if he isn't good enough to make the 2 deep. Reading some of their comments makes me weep for humanity. One in particular said (and I paraphrase) "Offer 30 scholarships out every year.......the best 85 get to stay on the team."
Fans and players aren't the same. What's good for the fan is that their school retains and continues to recruit highly ranked talent. What's good for the highly ranked player is winning football at a high profile program where the publicity is about their accomplishments not their infractions. I do think there is a subset of players who will be motivated to be a part of rebuilding the school's image but I don't think that works for a kid with NFL dreams who is looking for the best platform to develop and advertise his talent. I think Ohio State fans are going to be haunted by that "I'm taking my talent to ________," sort of defection for at least a few years.
If his mother is that big of an idiot, it's cause for concern. Anyone who cannot see the Tressel era for what it was -- a completely fraudulent program quite possibly had ineligible players on the field every game he coached -- is simply delusional. The fact is Maurice Clarett, for all his criminal ways, was telling the truth. Terrelle Pryor has the zero integrity we thought he had, and so does his coach. If Kyle Dodson's mother is piping up about how it was all a witch hunt, what is she teaching her kids?
There are plenty of great players we can sign. I'm happy we did not get Pryor and I don't want Dodson, either. Give me Magnuson and Diamond. Give me the high-character kids raised by parents who want to do it right.
Those are truck drivers, dude. They have nothing else in their lives besides Ohio State football.
The kids making the decisions have OPTIONS. They're not as deeply indoctrinated because they don't have to be.
SEC and Buckeye fans aren't exactly known for their morals or intelligence.
I live in South Carolina and work with a bunch of Gamecock fans.
It is the same as the comments on the message boards. I explain the issues of oversigning to them and they say "What is wrong with that, the best players should be on the team." Very frustrating.
The very best players are not flocking to be on the University of South Carolina's team. And when elite douchbag programs like LSU, Auburn and Alabama each take 5+ more players than they can legitimately offer scholarships, that's a lot of very good players that aren't going to USC-east.
Try explaining that to them. And then, maybe if they grasp that concept, they'll listen to arguments concerning the welfare of the student-ath-a-letes. But not until.
I didn't think about it that way before. I was hoping they would be concerned about the student athletes but that is not the case here down south.
Kids are still fans, boosters will still "boost" recruitments....
To suggest no recruits will come would be naive...But hey, hoping UM takes full advantage.
Jake Fischer & Anthony Zettel disagree
This is outrageously stupid. Ignore potential program crippling sanctions and the fact you don't know who your coach will be and just go with it!
I can vouch that there will be kids from Ohio that will still dream to go to tOSU and play for the Buckeyes. Where this will hurt them though is that if there are sanctions with scholarship reductions, tOSU used to make a killing getting those high 3* / low 4* types that are guaranteed Big ten starters by their jr / sr year from Ohio (i.e. the "depth" guys). With not as many schollies to go around, those kids are going to get left out to get picked up by the Iowa's, Mich St's, Penn St's, Kentucky's, etc and tOSU's depth that they counted on to bridge positions between high 4* / 5* kids is evaporated.
Remember, Lavelle Blanchard still chose to come to UM during the Brian Ellerbe era...
What about Chris Wormley? Don't think this will have an impact since he had UM and OSU in top two? Really?
than Mike Farrell as B.J. (lol).
The strategy will be to challenge kids to "see who the REAL Buckeyes are." TSIO is about to learn the folly of arrogance.
This will probably be the case after the sanctions are levied, and recruits know exactly what OSU is facing (probably two years of sanctions, I'm guessing). OSU will try to self-impose something for 2011 and 2012 to head this off. If they can pull that off, then a kid in the 2012 class will only have to deal with sanctions his freshman season, and a 2013 recruit won't have them at all.
The coaching transition will probably end up being a bigger wildcard.
